Jim Oberstart forgets:The Sultana blew up due to weak patches on her boiler and had no fire watch on duty. The Delta Queen boiler was safety checked annually and there is a roving fire watch everytime there were passengers, there were several layers of fire protection-fire main, fire extinguishers and fixed fire system PLUS the vessel had more life boats than the boat was rated to carry passngers. The boat was and is safe.
Many years ago, I worked on "The Big Delta" but I can't place where this video was taken. I really enjoy watching this, tho. I was always on the boat and never saw the boat from these vantage points.
what a perfect tune to listen to cruising along the inland waterway's in a steamer like the Delta Queen. bring's tear's to your eye's as It was a simple time and before all the rushing of modern society. It's Instantly 1865 and someone is playing banjo on the front deck as the smoke is furling out the fummel's and people are mosying up and down talking or listening to the music.
김동현 There is a delay now, but the Queen has been sold with the intention of returning her to service in the summer of 2016. We still need an exemption from congress to allow her to operate under the SOLAS laws that were never designed for river boats, but hopefully someone will buy a politician and allow that to happen. The owners of the modern non steam powered fake Queen of the Mississippi lobbied for the Delta Queen to remain in retirement so that their nasty fake boat would not have competition. Therefore, steamboat fans but boycott that boat so that they may never have another days luck with it.
too bad about the Queen. She was a beautiful ship. we rode on it many years ago from Davenport, Iowa to Prairie DuChein, Wisconsin. It was so much fun. something we will never forget.
for the video, please feel free to do so and giv credit to: "steamboats.org"; but taking care of the copyrights regarding the audio is your responsibility, I can't give any permission for that.
What a shame. Oberstar ignored all the safety built into the DQ. Living next door to Minnesota, the state where absolutely nothing is allowed, I will make it a personal quest to make sure he looses his seat. I do hope in times to come, another generation will get to see the Delta Queen slowly amble up the Mississippi River on a quiet summer evening, the strains of her calliope fill the night air.
It's a shame that she's gone, and the MG and AQ have followed, but only because Majestic America was forced to put them up for sale. See what Oberstar did, we no longer have overnight riverboats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@otef434 yes yes ans yes again, absolutly. one of america's valuable treasues cant be alowed to do nothing and not run and be enjoyed. GET THE DELTA QUEEN GOING AGAIN.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you're talking abut the banjo music? that's porobably personal taste ... Otherwise, the calliope part is the original sound of the calliope of the DQs calliope and it'd be a pitty to turn that off.
I grew up watching this Grand Old Lady cruise up and down the Ohio River adjacent to our farm
My first job out of highschool was as a deckhand on this Grand Lady
I just love seeing this boat I use to work on it 😃
Wonderful experience in 2004 ! Unforgettable Shelby Foote talked of history!

The first song is Scott Joplin's The Maple Leaf Rag, and the second is Tennessee Waltz.
Looks like she's coming back to life Spring of 2015!
Really? I don't live in America but i like that boat.

Hey, I wanna go!
@jrcortz Oberstar is gone the old bloke come on Delta Queen may you steam with pride again
I used to work for a Marine architect if the paddle wheel was lifted 8 inches you could get 2-3 knots more speed out of her.
What ever the calliope music was it was being played by the delta queen. I saw the calliope on her blowing out expanded steam.
@otef434

bооoоn
The calliope plays the starfish song.
It’s actually “Tennessee Waltz.”
Turn that stupid music off and you would have a pretty good video.

cool paddlewheel but man that music is annoying. Why do people always play corny music like this when showing paddlewheelers?!
