They started playing at 4 p.m.
In the garden of the canal-side Inn.
    We missed them.
They decanted to the bar, to entertain the non-football-watching crowd.
    We missed them.
After a fine dinner, in good company, I took a meander towards the canal path.
With only a young couple seated outside by the steps leading down, I fired up a smoke and pondered trotting down to the boat below.
“Excuse me, could I take a light?”, asked the young lady.
“Sure”, said I, and passed her a plastic lighter.
A guitar case, rucksack and sundry items were propped against the railings.
The young fella opposite her was picking gently and cleverly on an old 4-string ukulele.
I was transported to a time, long gone, when I tried something similar on a Maltese mandolin.
How good I might have been will never be known.
My Aunt smashed it over my Grandfather's head in a moment of pique.
    (Long story).
Old habits made me relate the story to the young fella.
“Well, here's one you might have sung”, said a voice from inside an explosion of hair and beard.
He played and sang and she harmonised.
Just we three, on the last cool June evening.
    It was beauty.
“Thanks very much, I enjoyed that. My name's Bob, can I buy you guys a drink?”.
“Thanks for the offer, my name's Robin and this is Amanda. We're drinking for free. We've been playing here today”.
“Sorry I missed it and genuinely humbled that you added one more song to your set”.
He gave me a CD and said “Be Gone”.
Thankfully, that was just the title.
Long past ten o'clock, they played to a private audience of five, outside, in the garden.
Giving of their time and their talent and leaving us with a wonderful memory.
    They had already been paid.
    They could drink for free.
There was nothing we could offer for their kindness.
    Then it hit me.
    I said to Amanda,
    “You can keep the lighter”.
(It was the least that I could do).
