This show used to freak my brother out...tbh that's kinda why us older kids would put it on, but we all eventually fell in love with the show. Our little brother included😂 please rewatch more episodes:)

Finally getting around to watching this reaction! It was a busy week.
Just like in the other episode about books, I find it a little hard to buy that Angela and especially Johnny would borrow so many books from the school library. They just don't seem like the type of kids to read a lot. Angela for example always strikes me as a bit hyper-active and I find it hard to imagine her sitting around with a book in hand.
01:20 And the show immediately addresses this complaint for Johnny :D Sometimes I should just wait and watch before I comment, lol. Also nice little detail: one of the books Johnny is standing on seems to be about sock puppets, which he of course often uses later on.
01:38 Ok, time to confess: I found Miss Yamagatchi totally hilarious as a kid. I had no idea she was supposed to be an Asian stereotype back then (despite the fact that it's pretty damn obvious) and just thought she was this funny talking, eccentric woman. I must say, apart from the horrible racially insensitive voice acting, I do find her intimidating and strict, but good at heart personality kinda fun.
03:05 Lol I don't think it would be THAT expensive :D
03:24 It's always funny when Mrs. Brinks gets hurt :D Who is the best slapstick character, her, Johnny or Angela?
04:06 It's a wonder that Nanette didn't immediately jump on the chance to gossip and spread rumors to everyone in school that Angela was reading books for babies. That would fit her personality pretty well. Missed opportunity for bullying Nanette, what's wrong with you?!
05:00 Lol, something tells me Uncle Nicky is just screwing with the kids. I do sometimes wonder though if he is really involved in shady criminal activities or just a big wannabe gangster.
07:00 Now that you mention it, this episode would have lend itself perfectly to a parody of heist movies like Ocean's Eleven. Missed opportunity.
08:00 One thing I really like about Angela's character is how she is just so prone to overreaction and panic :D Again, this is a really apt depiction of a child's thought process.
10:30 Also, one positive thing about Miss Yamagatchi: she seems to be completely immune to Nanette's ass kissing and manipulation, unlike most adults we meet in the show. (I'm not really trying to defend her character, I'm just trying to look at the bright side)
Also, just noticed, the fact that Angela loves this Happy Happy Bunny book fits in well with her old bunny suit Halloween costume seen in Boo-Who. Continuity!
12:10 That is a brilliant plot idea! I wonder how Angela would react if she realized that she shared some characteristics with Nanette.
Fun middle of the road episode is a fitting description. I enjoyed it, but there are quite a few I enjoyed more.

Chris I know what you mean! Hope your week didn’t stress you out too much.
I agree, and also don’t see Angela and Johnny being serious bookworms but a few simple books like Happy Hoppy Bunny seem fitting for them. And YES continuity FTW! It’s implied that Angela has a small obsession with Happy Hoppy Bunny.
Also seems strange that Nanette wouldn’t continue to make fun of Angela for reading Happy Hoppy Bunny. Though she tries to get her in trouble and Mark and Derek already did so maybe it’d be redundant.
Ooooh, a heist parody would have been fun.
To answer your question, from a schadenfreude perspective, Mrs Brinks is the funniest slapstick character but in a sincere way, I like it when Angela’s involved in it.
Angela would NOT take being compared to Nanette well. She certainly deserves to hear it sometimes.
I disagree. 😂I think Uncle Nicky IS genuinely shady and always owes money to someone, but is not competent enough to be much of a threat.
I mention Mrs Yamagatchi because while I think the cast/crew had good intentions, the way she’s depicted is insensitive by today’s standards. It’s that she is a crude stereotype and most likely was voiced by a white actress instead of a Japanese-American. There is also a history attached to racial caricatures. They were used in anti-Japanese propaganda, and you can see examples in Looney Toons, and helped the the US justify putting Japanese-Americans in internment camps after Pearl Harbor.
I certainly won’t have any bad opinions of people who like her, but there is a different context here.
In the states the racially charged climate is more intense than it was in the 90s. Creators have to consider how people are depicted, mostly to know and avoid crude stereotypes. That’s why I mention it as much as I do.
You make excellent points on her as a character. It is rare to see an adult Immune to Nanette. She is strict but overall competent. The show uses lots of stereotypes and I think there were good intentions about how to depict people but it doesn’t always come through.

I kinda feel bad for Nanette with her face expressions and the fact she thought Angela didn't own it
