So if the Mist is otherworldy in nature then it might inflicts insanity to anyone exposed for too long. I hope that they doesnt focus too much on the whole human chaos thing, even though its nice to see how man reacts against something that they dont understand. The unknown horror.

The main problem is that if man is the monster then what the fuck are we scared of? People don't seem to take this into account. This movie is really not a horror movie but a pro "HUMAN FUCK YEAH!" movie. Showing us to be more or equally as terrifying as actual monstrosities from alternate dimensions. It's basically human ego stroking. I don't know about you, but I love the idea that stepping into someones house freaks them the fuck out. I LIKE being a threat that people cannot ignore. That actually DOES convey a sense of importance. But if nothing can do that to me? Then where is the horror?

Doing that half-right is twice as expensive than doing the cheap si-fi cgi. And even when done right, when expenses balance out, cgi allows filmmakers without a clear picture to work out the specifics later... even have them totally handled by other people without looking incompetent. Working with a puppet/animatronic on stage that you have to light and shoot it's harder than just leave it to the effects crew.
The worst part about it is that they thought they could get away with making the character being "the raped girl" but it's clearly horrible character writing. I have no reason to feel empathy for a character I don't know anything about. She's not developed before and, after the party, she doesn't show any sign of personality. They are actually using rape to make you feel empathy for a character.

You got the government experimenting with alternate dimensions and opening up a gateway between two, inadvertently releasing a monster into our reality. Plus it's got other references that are really cool, including the title looking like an old Stephen King book cover would.

I found the "cockroaches" to be effectively scary. If the small Mist creatures are that deadly and painful, imagine what it'll be like with the bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and bigger Mist creatures.
Fun fact: The Mist mini series was filmed in a mall in Bedford, Nova Scotia. My husband works in the mall an saw some of the taping as it was being made. He even had to work from home because they needed use of the parking lot.
Honestly I can't say anything without seeing more episodes. It's a pilot episode so it's mainly just to introduce the 'mist' and the characters so the lack of monsters isn't all that surprising. I can surely see them using the whole "man is the monster" as a subplot to give the characters some starting point for their arcs. Forget that this should have been "The Mist", not "The Happening". The show itself is boring. Three episodes in and all we get is small town politics and family matters plus some outsiders that had no business being in that town other than fill up the gaping hole left by removing the monsters. I get that King would probably approve a focus on the monstrous humans, but after such a fantastic film, this series comes as a major disappointment. God, I loved that movie.
At this point the Mist tv show just isn't doing it for me. The original movie got it right. Relatively short and sweet with an impactful ending. Actual actors acting and no monster teasing. This show seems unnecessary. Now it's time to watch the movie..... yeah!
i think the monster who killed the lady was one of these three things: one of those tentacle creatures, a completely new monster that can shoot out some sort of harpoon/knife stinger, (thus for a lack of appendage or spear point jutting out the other side, the stinger would be for grappling prey without revealing itself)or could even be a Widower, (the spiders) but fully grown as seen at the end of the sorurce movie (when the army starts burning things they burn spiders the size of a fucking car). either that or when the person who is a "monster" is revealed, maybe the creatures appear and kill him. Either way, no person or group of people could have killed her at that exact moment of time and pull her back into the mist

It's gonna be another slow-paced, character focused TV show that teases everything and reveals nothing to try to keep viewers hooked one season after season.

you can watch the first 3 episodes on demand. after seeing the first 3 it feels like it is leaning towards humans mistakes and regrets but hiding something much more sinister later on. this series reminds me a lot of higurashi no naku, a horror anime where the strange things the happen in the town is never explained only that its either an experiment gone wrong or religious origin. this feels similar where it gives us many hints that the mist is nature fighting back but what I hope is that there are hints of another force at hand; being the arrowhead experiment gone wrong. i hope both have many evidence towards the end of season 1 but neither is explained as the cause leaving us to speculation.

The mist is more a story about how normal people act when they are terrified and have no clue what is going on, the monsters are just a plus. The film did it amazing with Mrs. Carmody and how she gets the scared people in the grocery store to side with her and even sacrifice innocent people. That being said this show will suck donkey balls if it doesn't have any monsters because they don't have any good characters or story to fall back on. The only character I even remotely like is the black army dude and all he's done is yelled "there's something in the mist!"
The Amnesiac character - it's basically the writers holding a big sign up to your face reading: "We had no idea how to properly write a story that would still be revelatory in its later stages".

One of the great things about the movie was that it portrayed fairly believable, human characters reacting to extraordinary circumstances. The source of horror for the audience was empathy; we put ourselves into the characters' shoes, and imagined how we would react to the events of the movie. The characters were developed through their reactions to the mist and the horrible monsters within. All of the characters in The Mist series are extremely simple archetypes. I can't really empathize with anybody. Normal looking people were cast to play the characters in the movie, while the cast of the show is mostly composed of photogenic but wooden actors. Nobody looks or acts like a real person. Part of the horror of the movie and the novel came from how you couldn't prepare for what you'd find in the mist. None of the monsters were impossible to deal with, but you never knew what you were going to find. Just as soon as you learned how to kill the giant stinging insects and primeval bats with fire, you run into a hive of acid-slinging spiders. From what I've seen in the previews, all of the monsters in the show's mist are some kind of swarm of ordinary animals. Swarm of moths, swarm of leeches, swarm of cockroaches... I wonder what kind of insect swarm ripped off that lady's face in the pilot. The worst creative decision by far was to give the mist a psychoactive effect. The ENTIRE POINT of the book and movie was to demonstrate how people can go crazy when put into extreme circumstances. It was an interesting exploration of crowd psychology. Now the writers don't need to worry about coming up with well thought out explanations for irrational behavior, because the mist just makes you CUH-RAYZEE. The only way this series could get good from here would be to undo everything it established in the pilot.
Big oll FYI here, "humans being the real monsters" is a subtle or overarching theme in nearly every single one of Stephen King's short stories, novellas, books, or novels. It's certainly no "cope out" to the Master of Horror. It just happens to be more overarching than subtle in this rendition. Besides, there was a hell of a lot more to the original novella and movie rendition than "cool monsters". The people were pretty monstrous without, then with the Mist. The propose of the piolet was to have the audience see what's going on in the characters lives before the messed up stuff hits that fan, which is something that Stephen King does in every single one of his written works.
The Mist is like Silent Hill. You can't see whatever is going to kill you until it's right in front of your face, and that monster is made from your mind.

No, I'm fairly certain Arrowhead conjured The Mist as in the books/movie. I'm pretty sure there are monsters as well. I think they only introduced the nature turning against man concept as a driving force for Mrs. Raven's descent into insanity. They've set her up to takeover as the cult leader - the role that Mrs. Carmody had in the book/movie. Whereas Mrs. Carmody interpreted The Mist as the end times foretold in the book of Revelations, Mrs. Raven will interpret it as Nature is coming to give Man his just desserts and she will need to help facilitate it's revenge in order to be spared (i.e. sacrifice).

At this point the Mist tv show just isn't doing it for me. The original movie got it right. Relatively short and sweet with an impactful ending. Actual actors acting and no monster teasing. This show seems unnecessary. Now it's time to watch the movie..... yeah!
i think the monster who killed the lady was one of these three things: one of those tentacle creatures, a completely new monster that can shoot out some sort of harpoon/knife stinger, (thus for a lack of appendage or spear point jutting out the other side, the stinger would be for grappling prey without revealing itself)or could even be a Widower, (the spiders) but fully grown as seen at the end of the sorurce movie (when the army starts burning things they burn spiders the size of a fucking car). either that or when the person who is a "monster" is revealed, maybe the creatures appear and kill him. Either way, no person or group of people could have killed her at that exact moment of time and pull her back into the mist

You said there are no monsters, yet that woman got dragged into the mist by something powerful, not to mention had her jaw ripped clean off. And let's not forget the dog scene, that poor animal got impaled on a tree branch and beheaded. I'm not discounting your theories, I'm just saying the evidence points to something malicious hiding in the mist.

after seeing the first 3 it feels like it is leaning towards humans mistakes and regrets but hiding something much more sinister later on. this series reminds me a lot of higurashi no naku, a horror anime where the strange things the happen in the town is never explained only that its either an experiment gone wrong or religious origin. this feels similar where it gives us many hints that the mist is nature fighting back but what I hope is that there are hints of another force at hand; being the arrowhead experiment gone wrong. i hope both have many evidence towards the end of season 1 but neither is explained as the cause leaving us to speculation.

The mist is more a story about how normal people act when they are terrified and have no clue what is going on, the monsters are just a plus. The film did it amazing with Mrs. Carmody and how she gets the scared people in the grocery store to side with her and even sacrifice innocent people. That being said this show will suck donkey balls if it doesn't have any monsters because they don't have any good characters or story to fall back on. The only character I even remotely like is the black army dude and all he's done is yelled "there's something in the mist!"
The Amnesiac character - it's basically the writers holding a big sign up to your face reading: "We had no idea how to properly write a story that would still be revelatory in its later stages".
I came for giant monsters gruesomely killing people, not an overused message about how humans are shitty. We all knoe we're a shitty species, give me my gore!!!!!!!!
One of the great things about the movie was that it portrayed fairly believable, human characters reacting to extraordinary circumstances. The source of horror for the audience was empathy; we put ourselves into the characters' shoes, and imagined how we would react to the events of the movie. The characters were developed through their reactions to the mist and the horrible monsters within.
All of the characters in The Mist series are extremely simple archetypes. I can't really empathize with anybody. Normal looking people were cast to play the characters in the movie, while the cast of the show is mostly composed of photogenic but wooden actors. Nobody looks or acts like a real person.
Part of the horror of the movie and the novel came from how you couldn't prepare for what you'd find in the mist. None of the monsters were impossible to deal with, but you never knew what you were going to find. Just as soon as you learned how to kill the giant stinging insects and primeval bats with fire, you run into a hive of acid-slinging spiders. From what I've seen in the previews, all of the monsters in the show's mist are some kind of swarm of ordinary animals. Swarm of moths, swarm of leeches, swarm of cockroaches... I wonder what kind of insect swarm ripped off that lady's face in the pilot.
The worst creative decision by far was to give the mist a psychoactive effect. The ENTIRE POINT of the book and movie was to demonstrate how people can go crazy when put into extreme circumstances. It was an interesting exploration of crowd psychology. Now the writers don't need to worry about coming up with well thought out explanations for irrational behavior, because the mist just makes you CUH-RAYZEE.
The only way this series could get good from here would be to undo everything it established in the pilot.

Big oll FYI here, "humans being the real monsters" is a subtle or overarching theme in nearly every single one of Stephen King's short stories, novellas, books, or novels. It's certainly no "cope out" to the Master of Horror. It just happens to be more overarching than subtle in this rendition. Besides, there was a hell of a lot more to the original novella and movie rendition than "cool monsters". The people were pretty monstrous without, then with the Mist. The propose of the piolet was to have the audience see what's going on in the characters lives before the messed up stuff hits that fan, which is something that Stephen King does in every single one of his written works.
So, The Mist series sucks.

honestly, they should've just used the monsters again, they were so unique and amazing. They were the reason (aside from the ending) that the movie is still talked about today.

No, I'm fairly certain Arrowhead conjured The Mist as in the books/movie. I'm pretty sure there are monsters as well.
I think they only introduced the nature turning against man concept as a driving force for Mrs. Raven's descent into insanity. They've set her up to takeover as the cult leader - the role that Mrs. Carmody had in the book/movie. Whereas Mrs. Carmody interpreted The Mist as the end times foretold in the book of Revelations, Mrs. Raven will interpret it as Nature is coming to give Man his just desserts and she will need to help facilitate it's revenge in order to be spared (i.e. sacrifice).
I really like this pilot. I wish it would have lasted longer than just one season.
