Laut Trompete zu spielen können viele, aber wie sich Lukas Gothszalk Chor oder der Altistin dynamisch und lyrisch anpasst ist schon beeindruckend. Gerne mehr.

A lovely performance. Many thanks to everyone.
Wonderful soloists, and Miriam Feuersinger has the perfect voice for singing Bach: lightness, precision and clarity. Always a joy to hear her.
Also, it is great fun to see and hear the imposing and rarely heard 32' Contra Fagotto (playing two octaves below unison pitch) and normally heard only in the Pedal division of larger pipe organs. Ein Feste Burg [BWV 80] is one other Bach cantata that uses it, in the opening chorus and the concluding chorale.

The score for BWV 80 specifies a 16' Posaune stop for the organ pedal; there's no 16' or 32' (!) bassoon part in the score. BWV 77 also has no 16' or 32' (!) bassoon part; only an organ with a pedal would have the volume and sustaining power to hold the whole notes of the augmented cantus firmus that are tied over for 3+ measures; for lack of wind power, the poor bassoonist in this performance is forced to play those notes without the ties. In both cantatas, the organ plays an augmented version of the cantus firmus in canon.

In Herr Lutz the Foundation and Bach is in such capable hands. The tapestry of the opening chorus is so beautiful. We forget that Bach had to deal with so many constraints and still meet deadlines. Fortunate to witness this performance although I would've loved to be there in the audience! Kudos to this fine ensemble (with a Jeff Bezos look-alike)!

Those who wonder why the Trumpet is out of tune, it's written on purpose! the text speaks of the imperfection of our love. In fact, the second part of the aria is tuned to emphasize the contrast with the true love of god.

The trumpets of that time did not have tone holes. The obbligato part was probably played on a jaegertrumpet with hand stopping, if Richard Steuart is to be believed.

As was the custom in Leipzig churches in Bach's day, the cantata ends with a chorale on a traditional Lutheran hymn that would have been well-known to the Lutheran congregation in Bach's day and even today. The last line of the tune starts on G and ends on A.

it is 18th century German (saxon dialect, long before the Duden :). "Du sollt"/v"Du willt " is frequent, even in the cantata "Aus der Tiefe" (BWV 131 "So du willt, Herr, der Sünde zu rächen")

Such a shame that an otherwise wonderful performance gets a bit tarnished by the injection of these little, musically trival organ interludes and phrases, especially in the chorales. For what reason is this done? The wonderful dramatic chorale feels now "chopped into segments" by this practice, and it adds absolutely nothing musically. Really upsetting and they didn't do it years ago and for some reason this is done now in all of the recent recordings :(

  • @stevenlester2606

This is the strangest cantata I’ve ever heard. It sounds unfinished, sometimes the aria’s didn’t fit their accompaniment, especially the trumpet and the alto and, of course, the very strange ending. Bach’s employment was probably almost ended, I’ll bet, after he offered this one to the congregation. Bach could be very weird sometimes.

@@mariannestoffers5067 Gibberish. "Wonder on what lyrics he could write. If there where lyrics"? Why do you question whether there are lyrics in this cantata? Do you think the singers are just making up the words?

    • @herrickinman9303

You don't know what you're talking about. You can't even spell "arias." Bach composed this work in 1723, the first year of his 27-year tenure as Director of Music of Leipzig's main churches. This work has tonal and modal elements. That's what happens when you set modal hymn tunes.
Your ear is apparently made only for tonal music. You probably don't even know what modal music is. I won't waste my time addressing your naive aesthetic judgments of what sounds "unfinished," "doesn't fit" or sounds strange to your tonal ear.
