My home is from 1883 and we love it. It's furnished with antiques from that era as well with over 20 tiffany lamps and fixtures. A good source for hardware is Crown City Hardware, Bradbury Bradbury Wall Paper, Decorators Supply for plaster medallions and trim.
My grandfather was chief executive accountant for Pabst Blue ribbon from 1936 to 1971.. worked directly with the Pabst family.. it was an incredible time a much happier time how much more productive time until Grandpa retired in 1971 miss those days of all the free beer we wanted directly off the plant Palace all we had to do was flash an ID card and we could take away cases of cans cases of bottles quarter barrels and half barrels on a weekly basis this began in 1958 and was stopped because of greed by those who were given this privilege in the summer of 1970.. it was a grand old time
@Pati...That almost happened to the Stephen Hopkins house, first chancellor of Brown University and signatory to the Declaration of Independence until the Society of Colonial Dames intervened and moved the property to Benefit Street in Proviidence, R.I., at the foot of Brown University. Interesting that as I walked through the house's slave quarters I had to stoop as I did aboard the Constitution in Boston.
Dojocho To be fair most of the destroyed churches in russia were destroyed during the revolution because the bolsheviks were ideologically opposed to religion not to create parking structures
One of our local large companies here bought a historic mansion written into the contract that could not be demolished. So they "accidentally" tore down the 3 story mansion claiming it to be mistaken for the small carriage house. BTW they did this in pitch dark without lighting, sounds pretty normal and safe huh.
@@cardinaloflannagancr8929The same happened to the Plankinton Mansion - up the street from the Pabst. Marquette University tore it down in the middle of the night while protesters were sleeping.
we used to go there on field trips as a kid. There is also a bar close to the brewery which was the house bar due Pabst beer to this day I still think it's the most beautiful bar I've ever seen the wood work is amazing
omg! what a beautiful and truly grand home! I love beautiful old places like this. I didn't come from a wealthy family, but if I ever came in to a fortune of my own this would be the type of home I would love to have. they just don't build houses like this anymore, all of the beautiful wood and the ceilings, the Victorian era furnishings, and even the wallpaper is the best materials of that time. it would be truly awesome to wake up every morning with the sun coming through one of those huge windows and feeling like you were living in a time long ago. :-)
I agree. I hate when they tear these old buildings down. I hate when people who are too ignorant vandalize places like this. I'm just glad this one was saved.
@Mr. McCarrell...They're not built because the cost would be prohibitive. These glorious mansions were built in the days of very cheap labor. If you haven't visited California and if plan to, may I respectfully recommend the Huntington mansion at San Marino, Bellosguardo mansion in Santa Barbara (the life of Huegette Clark was well chronicled by Bill Dedman, New York Times) and the Carson mansion at Eureka, Ca. I don't know whether the tombs of both Henry Huntington and his wife Arabella are still on the grounds of the Huntnigton Library. But if they are, they represent another facet of the grandeur of the times. Don't waste your time visiting the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. The lady who owned it was bonkers.
This is very encouraging. Here in Victoria, we have a mansion referred to as Craigdarroch Castle, and an elegant manor known asPoint Ellice house. Point Ellice house was actually abandoned by a Scottish businessman and his family. Everything left. A true success for an abandoned building. Different: all one floor, but very large, and a huge attic area. I helped re-insulate it. Best of all things in that house. Silk draperies with patterns in gold thread. Incredible stuff. Craigdarroch is equally impressive, on a larger scale. A billiard room about 30`x40' for example. There are also many houses deemed heritage houses located throughout the city. I wouldn't want to go anywhere. More of these buildings should be preserved, as beauty is ageless. :-)
Wasn't Craigdarroch used in the series Anne of Green Gables? I think that is where Anne spent time with the rich old lady whose wheelchair was wheeled around that giant space.
Beautiful! Makes me happy of my choice to keep all of my home furnished primarily in the classic deep dark woods and not ruining with paint.. They paneling and moulding and design detail in this home are stunning
Great tour but I would have liked to have seen more of the interior. They wouldn't have had to tear down the carriage house. Make it like the Eisenhower Home in Gettysburg, PA. You can't drive on at all. You get the tour bus where you buy your ticket - no parking - no problem.
To think Grand Avenue, now Wisconsin Ave. was lined on both sides with mansions like this, but all of them met with the wrecking ball, except this one. What a shame. All the Old World character gone for hideous high-rise apartments.
I've toured the Pabst several times when I still lived in Milwaukee, and it is Beautiful, particularly during the Holiday season, when its dressed for Christmas
4:36 WHY WASN'T THIS ONE SAVED?! It looks _so_ much more interesting than the flat-faced Pabst mansion! God _dammit_ Every time I see a house that is just _perfect_ it's always been destroyed! Are my personal tastes in architecture really that bad or something?
+PsyGoth EXACTLY! Love that one too! ..with the widow's walk...No... you have excellent taste in architecture, design and fine craftsmanship ...which are lost arts...Anything built today looks like a box with windows....Still can't believe this was sold with the intention of demolishing it for a parking lot and unfortunately, this is still happening today.
No I completely agree with you! I think to get my dream house, I have to win the lottery and build it. Hopefully someone would be willing to build a house and make it look like it's hundreds of years old..... I hate new houses. No character, no life. Old houses are SOOOOO much more beautiful! What REALLY hurts is when people paint all that gorgeous wood.... WHITE! That should be illegal!!!
In Toronto, we are loosing much, in the way of Architectural Grandeur. Some facades are being kept, yet, what rises from their core is ...CONDOS, CONDOS, CONDOS! I love it when an old bank becomes a pub!
i would've thought the Pabst mansion would be more fitting of such a distinguished beer. I'm talking about a trailer park shack with a portable meth lab, dogs on short chains, moonshine still in the backyard, tire dangling from a rope on a tree and cars buried underneath grass that hasn't been mowed since the depression
That can be said about almost every consumable product ever sold on this earth, if you over indulge. Ever hear of personal responsibility? You're quite the blamer, aren't you Downer Dwight?
So pleased to see the residents of Milwaukee took pride in their town and preserved at least one of the magnificent homes of their past. Pabst Blue Ribbon--The Beer That Made Milwaukee. Enjoyed by sailors in the USN for years. I know, because I was one of 'em! 😀👍
I was always astonished by the way in which Americans love and admire european cities and architecture knowing just how many of their own incredible architecture they demolished, from Penn Station to much of Detroit to some of the finest mansions and 'cottages' ever built on a scale you only see in America. Take the Chicago Columbian ' White City' and its wonders ,,,, There are a great many buildings just lying rotting all over America and Don't get me started on their Southern mansions and their simple homesteads, all rotting whilst skyscrapers go up and down all over for multi millions.
It's the American way! Capitalism rules! Always growth, growth, growth for profits, profits, profits. Letting things stay the way they are is stagnation. Can't have stagnation.
Milwaukee once was a beautiful city of the likes found in Europe, but of course, money talks and now the city is unremarkable like all other American cities.
Just as with all of the palatial mansions and buildings across the U.S. of this era, you won't see a single image of them being built. That's because they were already built by a previous civilization, most likely, the Tartars.
To bad they don't have a contest for someone to spend a overnight prize, with a chef's catered 4 meals. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and breakfast before leaving. It would give the owners and the community and again gives the home, back on 10 bests Mansions in America. Just an idea but wouldn't you like to see it and spend the night. The fact this Mansion wasnt torn down, robbed, and left to rot. That would be the first owner looking after it all these years.
You can go to Europe and find buildings 1000 years old. Why do we tear down everything in America. Tampa had beautiful cobblestone roads and they covered those roads with asphlat. The roads built by the ancient Romans in Rome are still being used. Crazy.
You ever notice the people who started all of these breweries back in the day like August Busch in St Louis and this guy here they all had these great big mansions that are still standing today even though all the other mansions in the area or tore down and not preserved...... makes me realize how much money is really in alcohol man us Americans are a bunch of Alcoholics apparently
Well I am a Los Native and I can't believe Pickfair wasn't saved. It was THE place to get invited to in the 1910 and 20's (Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks). Talentless and stupid Pia Zadora bought it and could easily have afforded to move it somewhere for future centuries to see how they lived then but no, she tears it all down. I so can't stand her.
You can't stand her for that, but I can't stand her on basic principles. What a hooker she is. Failed actress with an IQ of 10 and no talent whatsoever. Money is wasted on people like her.
I loved going into the smoking room, you can still smell the cigars and feel his presence. Beautiful place.
Something of this grandeur should be preserved forever.
Remarkable! So glad this building was preserved. I hope to see it in person one day
Love touring it every fall.
It looks like the whole area should have been preserved as a historical district.

I grew up in an old house, I love old houses.
How old
Stunning craftmanship masonry woodwork & Artistic elements stainedglass. Breathtaking beauty.Wow
+Cecelia Passarella : Wonderful old Milwaukee. We lost so much during the tacky 60s and 70s. Thank goodness for aware people!
It's very good to see that a community of people get together to preserve American art and architecture
Where? It all looks european, or copies of european, what's american about it?
@@sharksport01america is european
Thank you for saving it. It's beautiful. It's a shame people went to rid our history with parking structures.

Reminds me of all the Lighthouses that have been demolished throughout this country. Rare to find one. But, I sure do love a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.

Fantastic video.Historic preservation needs to be a priority in our ever changing country.A big thumbs up to those who find the means to do so!
Let's preserve the Pabst for all to enjoy.
Took the tour and loved it. Don't miss it, if you're ever in Milwaukee.
Pabst is still popular in Nebraska, where tomato juice is added to make it palatable.
I don't drink anymore, but when I did, you couldn't pay me to drink Pabst, maybe I needed to try it with tomato juice, it sounds awful.
Preserving the work of artists and craftsmen for generations to come. ....Like stepping through a time portal.

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing this video with us 👌

Nothing wrong with your taste. It's the rest of the country that's gone tacky as hell. This country's architectural decline started in the 1940s.

Great video 👍👍
Newark has a beer-baron history too. Some of the mansions are still there, but what do ya' do with such grand, over-built homes these days?
Don’t forget the sign seats at the table
How sad many of these great buildings were raised for PARKING! How STUPID! BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURES!
All i can say is WOW

I love me some PBR
What a waste to destroy historic building to build parking ramps etc
