  • Louis Armstrong performing "When It's Sleepytime Down South'" at the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival. "Sleeptytime" was one of Louis Armstrong's "signature" songs, and his entrance onto the stage at this 70th birthday tribute to Louis brought the house down. This is believed to have been the last filmed performance of Armstrong, who passed away in 1971.
From the original film "Louis Armstrong at Newport" produced and directed by George Wein and Sid Stiber. The original, first-generation 16mm film footage was transferred to high definition in 2008. Edited versions of the film, presented under the title "Good Evening Ev'rybody: In Celebration of Louis Armstrong," have aired on PBS, BBC, and other broadcasters worldwide, and a feature-length version was distributed on DVD.
A limited number of the DVDs are still available on Amazon at www.amazon.com...

The looks on the audience and the respect shown for this amazing musician says it all. He died within 12 months of this show and we have this piece of film to remember him by. RIP L.A.

Will something beautiful and full of good vibes like this ever occur again in the music industry?

Magical. I wish more people knew how significant and incomparable this great man's contribution was to the development of modern music. His work in the 1920s and 1930s was effortlessly innovative and trail-blazing to such an extent as to enable a definite, clear pre-Armstrong versus post-Armstrong difference to be discerned subsequently in the musical landscape.

This is Louis' theme song, just a beautiful person. Check out "Rare Batch of Satch" recorded with Chick Webb and Teddy Wilson in 1933, I believe, these sessions were my personal favorite, doing all of his signature numbers.
