    Reading through the first few comments there seems to be a bit of a theme along the lines of...I could hang something from the wall, paint the wall white etc. I quickly went through my requirements at the beginning of the video, but perhaps people are skipping past this, so let me explain my objectives here.
    This all starts off with the fact that I prefer to watch normal TV shows on a screen only up to 65" in size. Anything larger than that and the normal shows, (e.g. the evening news) look oversized. This is handy because I also like the look of the OLED TVs from LG as a potential replacement for my Plasma and they are starting to become more affordable(ish) at the sizes up to 65" Beyond 65"the prices for OLED TVs go crazy.
    Then on the other hand, I prefer to watch films on the largest screen I can fit in the room (which happens to be 95") - a 95" OLED TV is out of the question, so that's where a projector steps in.
    Other stipulations are....
    1) The whole setup (projector and screen) must be able to be hidden away completely leaving almost no trace.
    2) No brackets or attachments can be put on any wall - not even a little hook or a shelf. That's just how it is.
    3) The projector must go at the front of the room rather than at the back because there is now a large couch there.
    4) The TV is remaining in situ - it will be used for the 90% of the week that I'm not watching a film on the projector.
    5) I only have one room which is used for TV viewing during the day (and when the lights are on) and as a cinema in the dark.
    Now I'm aware that you can get a 1080p projector and possibly achieve a better picture for a much cheaper price - in fact I said so at the end of the video....but this particular video is all about the LG PF1000U - it's a new projector on the market - one of the first UST (Ultra Short Throw) 1080p projectors available and I thought that some people would want to see how it works. I know that this is a very specialised device - but since I was buying it anyway, it seemed sensible to make a video about it for anyone else who wants to know how/if it works. I expect that that there will be many people in situations like myself who want a large screen but don't have anywhere to mount a projector - these new UST projectors can make it possible.
    Thanks for reading.

      Thanks for putting this (and the same goes for your other reviews also mate) up. This is something I'd had in mind for my lounge room. Just one thing though, did you find there was a distracting spill reflection back off the screen & onto the ceiling? I had notice this happened in the show room of other short throw projectors. I assume this would tend to be a short term distraction I guess once you're int the thick of a block buster movie 😉. Other wise some kind of block out umbrella over the screen maybe needed. I can't see yours or my Mrs letting us paint a section of the ceiling black! Once again well done.

      +Techmoan This may be a stupid question but do you think it would be possible to put two of these LG UST projectors next to each other for less washout? I know very little about projectors but have seen videos of people putting two next to each other to improve the color in a lit room

    Never knew short throw projector like this even exist. My room is too large and with a fan in the middle mounting a projector in the ceiling is to hard or behind it and the distance is too far. This would be very ideal. Thanks for another great video and opening my eyes to more possibilities!

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      +usfdave10 Thanks - and that's the exact reason I made the video - these types of projectors are very new to the market and not very well known about, so it's great to be able to demonstrate something that not everyone has seen.

      +Techmoan what model is your plasma and what caused the failure? The buzzing is coming from the television?

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +digitalblasphemy1100 The buzzing was the mic picking up the screen RF interference. The buzzing can't be heard in person. This particular plasma is one of the last of the Samsung plasmas models. It had a good picture, but the panel failure rate is ridiculous. When I rang up to try and get it repaired under warranty, the repair company told me they had got three calls about the same model with the same fault that day. Looking on the forums, once the panel is replaced it's more than likely to fail again within a few months....so that's the end of my relationship with Samsung TVs. I already couldn't stand the way the whole operating system worked with the stupid pop up messages that couldn't be turned off warning me about features and updates I didn't use. I'll be glad to replace it with a 65" LG OLED as soon as a model comes out with the features I want, at a price that I can afford.

    • @digitalblasphemy1100
      @digitalblasphemy1100 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Techmoan that's a real shame because I believe that is the same model I have minus the smart tv features that I can't stand. Mine doesn't give me updates unless I use a thumb drive to do it so it doesn't prompt me that features are out of date. Every device I have hooked to it has access to the same smart features the television have so it's just a waste. I hope mine doesn't go out. I only just purchased it a year ago.

    Great video as usual.
    I know this is over 2 yrs old now.
    I would be interested in seeing a revisit of the setup and any changes you've made over time, Upgrades furniture etc.
    How about adding a 4 K projector? and integrating it with your sound system and other technologies. Ie Google Home, Alexa etc.
    Keep up the good work.

    I'm still using this projector, it's excellent. However, I must warn everyone who's about to get this or any similar ultra short-throw beamer: the projection surface must be completely flat like a wall. Virtually any fabric will never be completely flat and due to the way light is being projected from a relatively sharp angle, there will be a lot of distortion. Use the projector on a white wall and the picture will look perfect. I will also recommend a plastic dust cover for the model, they're available online.

    Thanks very much for sharing your experience setting up with the pull up screen, and the LG UST projector. I think your setup is perfect for some people who cannot drill holes on ceiling, and run cables behind the walls, especially for renters. The projector certainly filled with features, but 1000 lumens is definitely too weak. It is a very new type of projector though so hopefully in 2-3 years we will have something in 2000 lumens range

    The projector seems amazing. It hass all the features that I would ever care about including dlp (for those deeper blacks) and since you say there is no noticeable rainbow effect then even better. But what I like even more is how neat everything turned out! This projector combined with the pull up screen was a really clever idea.

  • @bobwoolcock

    Very impressive distortion correction and alignment set up routine. Although that wavy screen is a drawback. The only alternative would be to buy, as you already covered below, the special paint for the wall but then you'd need a rack to lower the regular TV out of the way and the Mrs would lose the dark colored decor paint on that wall. This is silly trying to out think Mat :)

    My kittens smashed my telly... so now I've decided to find out about projectors. And of course Techmoan, you're my trusted starting point. Six and a half years down the line, can you give any up to date advice on projectors? (I take it as a good endorsement of the LG one that you haven't covered a newly purchased replacement projector since this video). I'd love one that had built in UK digital TV tuning as I used to enjoy the snooker and other sports on my television until the cats intervened.

    My favorite part of having a projector was taking it to a friend's house, hanging a sheet on the side of the house, drinking a couple beers, and putting on a good movie. We'd make it take up the whole side of his house (he lived on the edge of some woods so he had no neighbors). Was pretty cool. I moved a few years ago, and the projector was preeetty bad, I think I just left it at his house heh.

    The brilliant part of DLP for me: video games. Super fast response times (note the direct comparison at the end compared to the plasma) as well as the no-burn-in nature of dlp micromirror arrays. Since even at full on/off the mirrors are still oscillating at several kilohertz, holding them on or off doesn't wear them out.

    Excellent video as always. I have short throw projector (not ultra short throw like his) since my room was small to accommodate regular projector. It's brilliant for smaller rooms like mine. At a distance of 1 metre from the screen, it projects image of 100 inches.

    @inspirationtoday7550 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It makes you wonder why all these years the projector makers didn't think to
    really build most of them to run closer to the screen and throw the picture up and forward. I know some could , but you hit on something that would definitely
    make more sence to do with projectors , instead of the old fashioned method of
    positioning the projector.

    • @segagenesis1989
      @segagenesis1989 ปีที่แล้ว

      Projectors are now redundant. TVs are getting bigger, the quality of the picture is getting better and the cost is coming down. If one was forward looking, one could "project" that this was eventually going to happen.

    This is really neat. We used to have a project setup a few years ago but really found it to be too low a resolution, too noisy, too hot and the screen had a strange DLP rainbow effect when your eyes panned across it. This technology looks quite encouraging to try a projector setup again - though for the money, you would buy a LOT of cinema tickets!

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +The Backoffice I haven't been in a cinema for years. All that rustling of sweets, chatting, texting, crazy snack prices. The last few films I saw at the cinema were out of focus, the sound went out of sync and was much too loud and there were marks on the screen where people had thrown things at it. Then there's the drive home afterwards in the dark, and that's if your car hasn't been broken into whilst you were watching the movie. Give me a home cinema any day - I can sit there eating my own cheap snacks, drinking a whisky, skip back if I miss something and pause the film to go to the loo.

    • @backofficeshow
      @backofficeshow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Techmoan I hear you sir! I only go a couple of times a year, and when I do it is on a Monday or Tuesday at the end of the movie's run. So basically the whole place to myself. Still, if the set-up cost say £1000, that would equal 66 premium VIP seats, so at two movies a year for two people, around 15 years worth of cinema? I need some other compelling reason to justify it, ummm I will think of something :)

    I myself switched my old 40" to a BenQ w1070 and it has short throw too, but I have mine ceiling mounted.
    I don't have room for a larger screen than 100" but that is awesome :)
    3D is great, the only downside for me is the noiselevel. It sounds too much for me when not looking at movies at high volume.

    Late to the party here, but
    That alcove looks like it has possibilities for hiding a pull down - i.e. extend the pelmet across the room/alcove area and hide a screen behind it...
    Notwithstanding your initial requirements not to impact the room too much.

    Interesting point. Just like the 'sound quality of speakers' issue, we can't really tell if the black bit at the bottom really disappears when the light is off from this video. The exposure settings of your camera and the post production brightness controls determine this. We just have to take your word on this. ;)

    I think I just fell in love and will have to fight the missus tooth and nail to be allowed to have that projector living in the same house as us. With plans to find a slightly bigger place where we can spare a whole section of wall to a TV and movie setup (the regular TV behind the screen was a strike of genius that I wish I'd thought of myself), this is high on my list of things that must be included. Time will show.

    Very interesting - I looked at that and though "surely that's going to distort the image in that weird mirror", but it looks really good. What a great solution for the space you have

    • @MikeAustin2012
      @MikeAustin2012 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CurryKitten It is " that weird mirror", that enables this box to project the image from the extreme angle and from so close to the screen. My Mitsubishi 57" DLP uses a very similar mirror and an even crazier looking lens to keep the cabinet down to about 10" deep. You can project from the back side of frosted glass or plastic and the image is MUCH brighter. I imagine that turning the brightness down would reduce heat and allow it to perform much longer. Just a thought...

    I used the Hitachi ED100 ultra short throw for the drama studio in the school I used to work in but this is a far nicer piece of kit. The one thing I would mention when reviewing projectors is the life span and cost of the lamps. As I say, I worked in a school and we had to live within a small budget. One of the first considerations was the lamp replacement costs as some lamps were almost as much as buying a new projector.

    Thanks for the video. Interesting the UST idea - never seen that before. I have a projection system (on the ceiling behind me) with a pull down screen (hidden by a soffit) and love it. No better way to watch movies. Down side is you really have to have a dark room. And routing the cables in my system was difficult!

    • @kennethbouchard8643
      @kennethbouchard8643 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, and they were pretty much useless unless viewed in total darkness and at a very narrow angle.
      Back in the 80s, they tried to adopt Sony Trinitron TVs to a silver coated or white screens, reversing the horizontal wires, to cause the image to be backward. Then when casting upon a screen, it would render a normal image. The larger you want the picture to be, the higher quality you need to make it look normal at very large sizes. If goign today I would want 4K just so that into the future your able to appreciate the higher quality images. But then you only live once, but why not get the biggest bang for the buck that you can.

    Great video with both the objective and your current solution covered in detail. All the drawback I noticed were commented on in the video, so I don't really have anything bad to say about your setup for your purpose.
    With my own setup my 46" TV is looking a bit small so I'd be interested in a short throw projector myself. However, there's no chance I would invest that kind of money when I enjoy 4K content as much as I do. So this is definitely something I'd look to do in the future when the tech advances, drops in price and becomes more widely available.

    Great projector +Techmoan i would be very tempted to ceiling mount it, and depending which way your joists are running, get a screen that disappears into the ceiling, but if you cant, just hide the closed screen behind a valance (some of that coving to match what you already have). That projector is so small, you wouldn't notice it, up there, 24" from the wall.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Stuart Taylor this setup was all about achieving one thing. Having a 95" screen which can be hidden away and not having anything permanently mounted in or attached on a ceiling or wall. If you are willing to mount things on to your walls then you can likely achieve similar or better results for much less money. However this has worked out well for me in my very specific situation. There are a lot of people who can't or won't mount things on the ceiling, and this video shows that those who find themselves in that situation do still have alternative options that they can investigate.

    Nice video! My home theater has a 120” screen and I still get an amazing picture with this
    projector. It is true that it has a loss of brightness compared with a TV. So? Up to 100" it
    is full hd. Beyond that it´s a transition between full hd and hd. My screen is hanging from the
    celling like your previous one. It is tensioned, so there is no problem with wrinkles.

  • @BaconKiller360
    @BaconKiller360 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you considered adding a weight to the bottom of your screen? Something that goes along the width of the screen to tension it out, keeping it taught while you're watching movies. Possibly a long black bar clipped at both ends. I realize this video is a couple years old, but I've watched quite a few of your videos and haven't seen a follow-up to this one.

    I noticed I was very susceptible to the rainbow effect on DLP projectors, to the point where they are pretty much unwatchable for me. You mention that LED lamp projectors don't have this issue, however I don't see how the lamp could make a difference?

  • @planetretro4581
    @planetretro4581 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got a cheap £200 Optoma projector and from about 12ft away I get 100" screen too, plus being Optoma it has the best image for watching movies rather than PC slideshows and finally it has a much more useable 3000 lumens (although the traditional lamp will only last about 7000 hours BUT ECO mode is pretty much identical to the full power mode of lamp) All in all total cost £200 and a tin of grey paint for the wall.. I have had low lumen projectors before and it really isn't worth the risk of complete blackout viewing tripping over cables and breaking your neck :)
