Like an opera singer throwing themselves into a grand performance, where they pause dramatically and then their whole body summons the energy and channels the vibrations of that next crescendo.
To me it looked it was stretching its voice box to make a lower-pitched noise. You know when you sing a really low note you have to tilt your head down a little? I think that's what the bird was doing here, since birds have much higher pitched voices than humans.

I once saw a seagull struggling with something on a beach. I walked over, and saw it was an unopened shell. I got it opened and tossed it back down, in the birds direction. I only stepped back about 5 feet, and the gull flew back down, grabbed its meal, took a few steps toward me, bobbed it’s head up and down, in acknowledgement, and flew away. It was awesome!!

It's late May 2019, and my acquaintance the crow, just showed up again. I haven't seen him/her for a long time, nearly a year, I think. From the body posture and intent way he/she was looking at me, I thought this was my old buddy, but I wasn't sure until I heard him/her woo at me. Happily I had some nuts in my pocket. The first day back, it took a while to coax out the woo -- almost like he/she had nearly forgotten how to do it. But the next day he/she was more full-throated.
Aaaaw... 😍👍 I feed crows regularly, sometimes they sit on my roof or in the trees and call me and we make funny noises for each other for entertainment, it's quite funny. This one definitely appreciates you which is nice to see... 👍😊
I do work with a crow that makes the same head movements and a similiar sound when its happy or excited. Great creatures. And 10 times more curious it seems than all the other already very curious birds. He wants to check every item i bring into his enclosure, every time.
video is concise, original, and to the point. the title says exactly what it is and executes it flawlessly. This is the kind of content TH-cam needs more of.
The reason you crow kept coming around is because it recognized your face. They've done so many studies with crows, ravens etc. that they know that as fact. They are an extremely intelligent birds and can mimic sounds they hear. That woo is from hearing humans who are on the beach and maybe say woo in excitement or because the water is cold. Perhaps people surf there and its heard woohoo when someone catches a good wave. I thought it might be imitating the woo of a Mourning Dove when I saw the title of the video but it is definitely from human speech. My elderly Mother loved her crows. She would feed them her leftovers before they went bad because many recipes make too much. The entire "murder" of crows would come when one or two saw the amount of food and they would caw to let the others know there was enough to go around. I got curious and started researching them and I told her what I'd learned but Mom never spoke to them she said that was crazy. Crows are amazing. They can't fly until they are over 1 years old because their body is too large for their wings until they are about a year old. Then its interesting to watch their test flights. They recognized me because she had a fall and I was with her every day at the hospital and at the Rehab facility but Mom would ask if I had fed the crows and I cleared out the food. As weeks turned into months I wasn't home so I emptied my freezer of prepared foods, ate what I could and fed the rest to the crows. Then Mom got better and began feeding them herself. The murder kicked out 2 members, usually for stealing, and they followed my truck home but I never fed them because my downstairs neighbor had 2 kids and hated crows. I felt guilty about it but what can you do. One way to attract crows is to put something shiny next to the food and they will take the small shiny object with them. If you have a problem with Seagulls in the area so don't do this they can see a long way off. Inland you can do this but be prepared as they rise early and they'll be hanging out in the trees at sunrise cawing. They also give gifts, they gave my Mom a gold, shiny plastic button and I was leaning against the porch door as she walked across the lawn for the first time unescorted as she was tired of being escorted and she picked it up and asked what do I do with this. I replied smile and wave it and put it in your pocket and bring it in. They are glad you are back safe and sound. She did it and when she came in she said you are crazy. I said I know but you love me anyway. Crows are intelligent enough to have seen her taken away by ambulance and not return because a few have nests in the large oaks. Then after months of being gone she returns but she walks first with assistance and then with a cane and more tentatively. So they wanted to thank her for always feeding them despite her recent "accident."
Im not a bird expert, but for many years I've studied different types of woo sounds. It is my expert opinion that this belongs in the very cool woo sound category. More specifically the 4th woo. That was remarkably a very cool woo sound.
I didn't believe the comments at first, I didn't think it was possible for a crow to make such a cool woo sound. At last I have heard the woo and can confirm it is in fact cool. To those who have not yet heard the woo I hope you are able to hear it some day. Thank you youtube for finally giving me some fire recomendations.
Yeah they can talk like a parrot. They're incredibly smart. Solve puzzles and all kinds of stuff. Once you earn their trust i believe you have a friend for life
How can you not hear it. I heard it right at the beginning after he finished the nut.. he just kept repeating it but it was his then arching of his neck that made me think it was more he was a bit choked on it. Just my thought.
A wise saying goes like this: "it's not about the destination, it's about the journey". To those who haven't heard the woo sound yet, don't be jealous of the people who have; rather, appreciate the anticipation, the excitement, the experience as you await this very cool sound, and cherish these moments.
@Fame paved So I doubt the crow can conceptualize that it is saying "woo!" To us, but crows are indeed smart enough to have particular sounds for humans. They actually communicate information to one another very effectively, which is why if you're vilified by one or more crows, you can assure that number will only grow.
@@wolup I'd hate to hear one of those animal screeches that sounds like a human scream. Sometimes the coyotes in my area of Connecticut make horrifying noises.
Just in case you weren't aware, ravens are capable of human mimicry. Look it up, there's videos on here of them mimicking humans saying hello. Absolutely terrifying hearing that in the woods at night.
*SPOILERS* . . . . . . . . This was a rollercoaster! The twist ending of there being more than one cool woo sounds is what made this a 11/10. Thank you
@@grawlixTV It sounds like you are describing exactly what I've been seeing with one of my crow friends!! The sound is so interesting and it sure does look like a lot of effort to produce it
Ornithologist here! After having studied birds for the last 26 years and having travelled to vastly different regions and environments of the world to document information on almost 6,200 species of these beautiful winged creatures, I can confirm that that was a very cool woo sound.
Have raised several orphaned crows over the years, and they all did this, usually when interacting with me as I am doing something like gardening, and often after having received a treat, like a grub I dug up in the garden, or sharing a big bite of an almond croissant.
I'm mostly impressed by how safety conscious he is, as if he senses a possible trap. That means he has to understand the idea that other living things can set traps. He keeps pausing to survey the area, maybe to see if any more humans are joining the person holding the camera. He works a little, then he stops, backs up, looks all around, works a little more, and does it again. It demonstrates a sense of intelligence and awareness that seems disproportionate to its size.
I like the idea that another commenter mentioned, which is that the crow thought that the camera person cached the nut for himself and was testing to see if he could take it without the human getting mad or coming to defend it, haha. And making sure the other crows didn't see him take it (you can see the crow pause whenever there are other crow sounds in the background)
My roommate sets out nuts for a group of five crows that live around us. They've gotten to used to when she goes out in does it (as I'm putting my stuff in my car to go to work) so one of them will wait around then. When they see her, it starts calling. After she puts the nuts down, they all fly up the hill to just behind a little concrete barrier near the nuts and wait for me to drive away. I pulled out to the road and watched, they'll just hiding behind this little wall a couple of feet from the nuts. They won't hop up to the wall and be in direct line of sight till I'm halfway down the road. Very cautious, seem to understand that distance isn't safe but broken line of sight is. Lot of farms around here, I can only figure they learned that humans can kill them at a distance if there's nothing in the way.
there's also the idea that he's aware those rocks may fall if he isn't careful, and the only tool he has is his whole ass head. crows can be very skittish when they feel something is off, and he really isn't! he seems aware to watch the person filming although it is a trap to distract him and hide his head so he cannot see them, while making sure the rocks don't hurt him crows are insanely fuckig smart
@galaxythebat I love crows. I distance ride on a road bike, and I carry around a little sandwich baggie with dry cat food to feed crows whenever I can. The crows in my neighborhood recognize me at this point, and they get a lot closer to me than crows that don't know me
The undeniably cool woo sound begins at the timestamp 2:15. I must admit: the woo is, indeed, a very cool woo. I pity individuals who have not yet partaken in hearing the woo. Note: I have just been informed that multiple woo sounds are present in the video, and I am in a state of happiness due to this welcome presence.
Dear je mange ton chien, when I came upon your open correspondence I was excited at the prospect hearing for myself these sensational sounds. You are correct in asserting the axiomaticality of the coolness of these 'woos', and the number of them has surpassed my expectations.

Oh, that's absolutely what little love is doing. Crows greatly enjoy stealing each other's quarries. It's a constant game they never stop playing unless they are, themselves, already full.
They messed up my garden. One day I saw them ganging up on a young hawk so I started shooting them with my red Ryder BB gun. They haven’t been back in over a month
@@oldaccount5217 shit, dude, why fuck with crows? They don't call them a "murder" for nothing. They remember and recognise human faces, and "talk" to each other. Every crow in a 100 mile radius is gonna be coming to shit on your car 😂 Fr tho shooting them? You couldn't have just shooed them off? 🤨
@Old garden You can replant your garden, you cannot bring a bird back to life that you kill. Typically murderers start off killing animals, then they move on to killing other humans.
*Did you know,* Crows have the ability to mimic humans, much like parrots. And the noise this crow is making sounds quite a lot like an excited child spotting a crow :D Not too sure, but that might be where it picked it up!
I’m pretty sure he’s on a beach, and judging by the fact it’s not particularly bright I reckon that it’s a pretty cold beach. So it’s probably mimicking the reaction people have when they dip their bare feet in the water, especially since it looks down at its feet every time it does it
It might also be the Alpha female. They are known to make wooping sounds. I've had the pleasure of hearing an alpha myself, and it was very cool. Sounded like, "Wa-OOP, Wa-OOP!" And, at each syllable, it clicked its beak. Truly fascinating.
Crows and ravens are considered songbirds bc their mimicry abilities are some of the most advanced and developed in the bird world as well as the entire animal kingdom :) they can even go so far as to replicate the accents in human voices, and inanimate sounds like car engines.
Absolutely adorable. I've heard a raven couple say, "WOO!!!" before after chasing out a rival murder of crows, as if they were celebrating their reclaimed territory, but never witnessed a crow exclaim the same thing until this video. It seems to be a very positive sound to both birds.
This was a cinematic masterpiece. From the way it cautiously looked around before digging in the rocks, to the, indeed very cool, woo sound, I could not find a single flaw in this piece. If this goes to theater, every seat of every viewing would be sold out, I’m sure.

He might actually be mimicking humans! Members of the corvid family can mimic human speech, even better than birds that are more famous for it like parrots.
Yup, crows can mimic human speech. They do it the same way parrots do, using their syrinx to mimic words and sounds they hear and repeat them. People really underestimate the intelligence of crows and ravens. Crows are among some of the most intelligent creatures on our planet. Scientists have discovered they remember your face, they talk about you to other crows, they remember what you did, and more crows will attack if they heard you've done something wrong. Yup, they plan for the future too!

Crows can copy sounds of humans, perfectly, better than a parrot even. Check out fable the raven on TH-cam. I think this crow copied the excited sound from humans and new it was a an expression of celebration. Crows have the intelligence of 5 years olds, or somewhere around that level if I remember correctly.
@@MetalWolfReaper that makes sense... parrots are a good example of intelligence and learning capabilities. Why not crows... it is kinda funny that it heard 'wow' enough to pick it up tho.

I thought, and still think that is edited. The gesture may be to get rid of something from the throat. But also I know that some crow species are as good as imitating sounds like those parrots, so it may be that kind of crow. Still unbelievable.
That is hilarious! I have never heard that from my local crows--thank goodness you captured it! We have a crow that makes multiple meows, like your woo woo woo crow. We also had a crow that used to imitate us calling our dog Scout. It would say scout, scout, scout, and pause and then again scout scout scout. I've noticed the local crows seemed to pass these various vocalizations on to the following generations, too.
My great friend loved crows and ravens. He got lung cancer about 10 years ago. He was in his late 60's. He told me he wanted to come back as a crow. A couple of months after he passed away I was walking into the building we worked in minus him obviously and there was a crow on top of a bridge crossing the river there all alone just bitchin me out. I stopped and talked to it for awhile and it kept squawking at me and make no mistake about it. This bird was talking to me. So I stood there for awhile and reciprocated. Eventually I told him good bye, said i gotts get in there it's time to go to work. He squawked a a few more times and flew off. this happened several times over the next few months and then winter came and I never saw the crow again.
I watched this video about the mythos of crows being the ones to carry your soul to the afterlife, then I went to bed. I started dreaming of a huge crow that carried my soul to the afterlife, when I was awakened by the sound of tapping on my kitchen window board. I got up, and there was a big male crow pecking on it. I approached the board and he jumped on over to a branch in a tree right outside my 3rd story window and looked very intently at me. I put two walnut halves on the board and he grabbed them and flew away. It was the first time he visited and he hasn't been back.

It was honestly very wholesome.

So they wanted to thank her for always feeding them despite her recent "accident."
thanks for sharing your story, it was interesting to hear about the crows.

Yeah they can talk like a parrot. They're incredibly smart. Solve puzzles and all kinds of stuff. Once you earn their trust i believe you have a friend for life
Corvids can mimic and use tools to solve puzzles to obtain food. Try ravens.

How can you not hear it. I heard it right at the beginning after he finished the nut.. he just kept repeating it but it was his then arching of his neck that made me think it was more he was a bit choked on it. Just my thought.

Lot of farms around here, I can only figure they learned that humans can kill them at a distance if there's nothing in the way.
to be fair the pile of rocks was very conspicuous
there's also the idea that he's aware those rocks may fall if he isn't careful, and the only tool he has is his whole ass head. crows can be very skittish when they feel something is off, and he really isn't! he seems aware to watch the person filming although it is a trap to distract him and hide his head so he cannot see them, while making sure the rocks don't hurt him
crows are insanely fuckig smart
@galaxythebat I love crows. I distance ride on a road bike, and I carry around a little sandwich baggie with dry cat food to feed crows whenever I can. The crows in my neighborhood recognize me at this point, and they get a lot closer to me than crows that don't know me

If it was huge, possibly was a Raven
Nope.
I had 2 wild crows I rescued & who used to come & play with me occasionally. Tremendously intelligent & an incredible range of vocalizations. One would sometimes steal my keys & hide them while the other would distract me by untying my shoelaces & more than once I had to call in to work & say that I was running late because the crows hid my keys! One time my supervisor asked me if a raccoon hid my distributor cap this time! Great friends🐈⬛‼️🏴☠️
He's picked that up from people sticking their feet in the water and going, "wooo!" from the coldness! So cool! He almost sounds human. Good mimicry!
Wow I think you're right! Because every time he does it he looks down at his feet!
Nah, its mimicking seagulls
Nah, thats Ric Flairs personal messenger crow
Absolutely not.
@@HackedUpForBarbeque You're cooked mate
I think it’s just wonderful to experience what someone else finds important. It’s magic that someone found this bird important and decided to document it. Then shared it with the world because they thought it was worth sharing! I loved it!
This comment is so wholesome. I hope you have a pleasant day!

Maybe we’ve been exchanging these experiences since we painted caves 🙊 thank goodness for TH-cam, I don’t think there’s an ochre to accurately describe such a cool woo.
@@jessewru6425 Much longer than that. Art that doesn't require tools is mostly transient, after all
I agree with you! With all this ingenuinety and interest in widely different subjects etc humanity would be such a force to be reckoned with if we were working towards the same goal in unison (assuming we nail space travelling).
Clicked for the woo sound. Woo sound delivered. 10/10 no notes
Crows are so vocal, i can't help but wonder what that sound means. Never heard a crow do that before. Pretty cool...
Might be a choking on an almond, kind of sound
@@MetalWolfReaper that makes sense... parrots are a good example of intelligence and learning capabilities. Why not crows... it is kinda funny that it heard 'wow' enough to pick it up tho.
@@briantomcollins the thing lives on the beach.... probably a lot of drunk people going "wooow" all the time 😝
..or kids/just exuberant folk who0ping as they run for the water on hot sunny days, haha
The way he struts around after finding the nut 😭💖
The nut strut.
Post nut strut
😂😂❤️❤️
because of course its a male crow
Bob, I know its been 7 years since you posted this but thank you. TH-cam needed this amazing video on its website.
Woo!
Wooooo!!!
woo!!!
Man crows always look like they have their arms behind their back and really want to use them 😂
He's either very happy with himself.. or its stuck in his throat
That’s so funny. I was thinking the same thing 🤣
Yea or sick or sum
Yeah, the way he lurched every time I associated it with hiccups. Probably trying to dislodge something.
If you read the description for the video, you'll find that it explains why the crow is making the sound.
Hey, it’s one of my favorite TH-cam channels. Cool to see you here!
I love how it tugs its neck in when it goes "woo!"
its probably a part of how the crow is able to make that sound and its very cute :3
I'm wondering if the neck stretch has something to do with swallowing the bits of the nut? Nevertheless, cool "Woo".
Didn’t know crows can “woo”! Sounds like a very happy birdie 😊
Crows and ravens can actually talk (mimic) Its pretty weird when you first hear them say "how are youuuu" lol
If you dig that, check out barking owls. They wood like a person impersonating a dog
Could be choking
Well shit I totally forgot I watched this video (thanks YT algorithm) and was surprised to see my own comment as well as that it got any sort of acknowledgment 🤣
@@pr4208I saw a video recently of a crow/raven say “fuck you” to a dude for making fun of its beak 🤣🤣🤣
So cute! It’s amazing that a lipless creature can say “Woo!”
I also love how smart he is, to be cautious not to let the other birds know there is something interesting there. He even walks a few steps away and chills a moment right when u can hear birds in the background lol. "Oh nothing interesting over here" lol
Wow that is such a human-like sound. This is incredible. I love these older TH-cam videos and especially their no clickbait titles.
Right? This is before content creators were called “influencers”. Better time imo.
I thought, and still think that is edited. The gesture may be to get rid of something from the throat. But also I know that some crow species are as good as imitating sounds like those parrots, so it may be that kind of crow. Still unbelievable.
It probably heard it at some point and is mimicking.
Many corvids raised in captivity actually learn to speak just like parrots. They're incredibly smart little potatoes
Tbh to me crows and raven can sound clearer, more humanoid and more realistic than a parrot
As in scarily accurate
That is hilarious! I have never heard that from my local crows--thank goodness you captured it! We have a crow that makes multiple meows, like your woo woo woo crow. We also had a crow that used to imitate us calling our dog Scout. It would say scout, scout, scout, and pause and then again scout scout scout. I've noticed the local crows seemed to pass these various vocalizations on to the following generations, too.
They each have a different call...
nice!
Can crows talk like parrots? Or was it something else, like a magpie?
@@DeepSeaLugia Corvids are capable of speech like parrots are, yes. Even wild crows and ravens can pick up words if they hang around humans enough.
@@DeepSeaLugia Crows actually talk clearer than parrots I heard lol.
Sometimes you feel like a "woo." Sometimes you don't.
@@QualeQualeson you made a bargain with that crow: two walnut halves for your soul.
Whose that butter talking to the crow?
@@QualeQualeson sounds like you found what we shamans call your spirit animal.
@@PalmettoNDN I think you're right :)
Out of all the woo sounds I’ve heard in my life, this is one of the coolest.
One of the woolest

That is so adorable!
It sounds like a little Crash Bandicoot
I hope your crow friend is doing alright. :)
Oh my gosh! You're totally right!
Flashbacks to "Tomb Wader", "Diggin' It", "Night Fight", "Bug Lite", and those DAMN jetpack levels...

Crash Crow
Hahahaha
I have never heard that sound before. Hearing it brought me joy. Crows are amazing creatures. Thank you!
Now imagine if it was a pile of sunflower seed. That would have a “woohoo”❤

And these were the best woos I've ever heard in my life. Cured my depression
Better even then a Ric Flair or Four Horsemen promo? Jk, this is better. I wonder what the sound means.
He even knows he’s being tested and considers that it could be a trap for a moment. Incredibly intelligent birds
That makes sense
I was wondering why he fussed with the rocks for so long.
The “Woo!” sound was great. This video really was worth my time.
