Did James Houston have a sack against the Jaguars or was it the Houston texans, they keep saying he only has one sack and I thought it came against the Houston Texans and it was at a critical time that basically helped win the game because remember Detroit was down 23 to 7 at halftime and we're playing like shit and the defense came in the second half and shut out the Houston Texans and James Houston was a big part of that win
I knew he would be gone when I saw how he did his downups lol I wanted James Houston but from injuries, practices habits, lack of production.. it was inevitable. I think the constant pressure to practice hard and play hard wore him out. Remember Dan Campbell is one of the only NFL coaches that has full speed contact hitting in his practices. James made it up from the practice squad his rookie year because he didn’t make the active roster, he was activated before the thanksgiving game against the Bills. My guess is his drive and hunger went away once he started getting game day money and is being replaced with someone hungry. Also James never wanted to be an edge rusher, his dream was to be a Linebacker but his college coach Deion Sanders told him edge rusher is the only way you’ll see the field in the NFL.
This sucks for me. Had high hopes for him, look at my picture. Gonna happen more and more as we stack up. Dude was an absolute unit, lightning in a bottle, what a year.
I hope we're releasing him with the idea of bringing someone to impact the team right now. James Houston, I view as a depth edge rusher/ linebacker. He is coming back from the injury but he has young legs. Just turn 26 a couple weeks ago. I don't think it's out of this world to think he can't turn his career around, I mean the Lions are getting the best of Jameson Williams and this is his 3rd szn (he tore his ACL in college) These injuries take time to fully heal and players to feel confident to trust their body. I assume we're bringing in a better corner than Vildor to help with that position group. We shall see.. I think that losing 2 edge rushers so far and releasing a guy who hasn't been that impressive so far but I view him as better than Vildor. I at least view him as holding more value than Vildor. I'm actually surprised Vildor is still on the team.
I think this is more surprising than people are giving credit for because he had a breakout rookie season and he's a 7th round pick, so he definitely overachieved but at the same time you can't have too high of expectations for him because he is a 7th round pick but since he had that breakout rookie season everybody put him on this higher pedestal. And then he got hurt and he was out literally all of last year so with that type of injury, when you come back, you can't just get thrown into the fire you got to get acclimated back to playing at the NFL level so I understood why he wasn't being played a majority of the snaps when he came back. It seems like he didn't really play a lot of snaps until after Hutchinson got hurt but if you remember his rookie season when he had a good year, Hutchinson was on the other side of the line getting double teams which probably helped Houston have that success, so everyone's expecting Houston to have that same success but Hutchinson is no longer in the lineup because he got injured early in the season . So I think it's unfair to hold Houston to that standard when he had that success with Hutchinson on the line. And I think even with Hutchinson being out now, Houston just now started finding himself again on learning how to play without Hutchinson getting the double teams because he had a good game against Houston and prior to Hutchinson getting hurt James Houston wasn't really getting that many snaps to begin with and I blamed it on him coming back from injury but maybe there's more to the story. But after Hutchinson's injury they put Houston in the basically take Hutchinson's place at defensive end and I think that's unfair because that's not really his strength. I believe James Houston strength is being that second guy behind a superstar on the defensive line that's going to attract double teams most of the time James Houston can benefit from that and get to the quarterback, but without a big pass rusher on the defensive line I don't think it's fair to expect James Houston to have the same success and now that they got the Darius Smith on the defensive line, they should have given James Houston more time to see if he can benefit from the Smith being in the lineup. It just seems odd that you would get rid of a guy you drafted and molded into a pretty decent player and get rid of him days before you have a big televised game and possibly fill his space with a new player that doesn't even know the system yet or if they come off the practice squad they haven't played in actual NFL games yet, so it just seems odd they would release him at this point in time. Even after he came back from injury he wasn't playing that many snaps and I always wondered where Houston was at, then recently I seen him more now that Hutchinson's been out and then he finally has a decent game against the Houston Texans and it seems like he's starting to come back on to his old self and Bam they released him two days before the Thanksgiving game it just seems odd
In James Houston's defense, I believe there's more to the story because you can't play James Houston the way the Detroit was and expect him to be a defensive end. He can't go one-on-one with offensive lineman and he's way undersized if you look at when he had a success, it's when Aidan Hutchinson was on the line and bringing in double teams. Then he gets injured in a second year with a broken leg and is out most of the year. Then he comes back this year but at the beginning of this season he was not playing the first three games. So then he slowly was being brought into the lineup but he wasn't playing that many snaps. And then if you look at them within the last maybe 3 or 4 weeks he's been playing decent for the amount of time he's been on the field like I said he doesn't get that many snaps so you can't expect him to get all these sacks if he's not on the field and even with that said I thought he was playing decent like he did in that Houston Texans game he played pretty good I'm just wondering is there more to it maybe he's lazy and practice for maybe he's not buying in to the program. Maybe he got complacent after having that good rookie year and thinks he doesn't have to work as hard and since he's coming back from injury maybe he feels like he's going to get a pass for not being as active or not working as hard. I don't know I'm just guessing but it just seems like there's more to the story because everyone says he hasn't been the same since he came back from the leg injury but it's more like Detroit hasn't treated him the same since he came back from the leg injury most players on most teams that come back from a serious injury usually get a solid full season to get evaluated. They don't come back from a season and an injury and play three or four games and the team says oh he's not good anymore and gets rid of him . That would be stupid cuz you're not giving the player enough time to even get back into the swing of things so I think there's more to the story that we're not seeing or hearing
Was First in Detroit to utter "One Trick Pony". Said in a Lions Talk Live chat. Got pushback. Then Coach Campbell said it. Then it went viral like mockingbirds!!! 😅🤣😂
I don't think you're giving James Houston enough credit bro because you're saying he wasn't the same but he's only been back for a few games. You can't count the beginning of this season cuz James Houston wasn't really in the lineup much at the beginning of the season. He didn't play many snaps the first half of the year. I would say he's only really been playing maybe the last four games and him coming back from injury you got to give him some time to like get acclimated you can't just expect him to be the same player freaking right when he gets back from a serious injury. That injury kept him out nearly all of last year so it wasn't like a you know sore calf or something where he comes back in two games. Coming back off of injury that keeps you out the whole season means that when you come back they should give you time to slowly get acclimated and not expect you to just be back to your old self immediately I don't believe he was given enough time in my opinion
Or maybe….. just maybe….. the Lions have a good coaching staff and GM that knows what he is doing. the DE depth is thin and if Houston was doing good enough he’d be earning the time.
I'm assuming that they feel like they're wasting a roster spot on James Houston because they can't use him as a defensive end because he's too small and they can't use them as a linebacker on every down because he's not good on the run and he can't do coverage, so he's basically a third down linebacker and recently since Hutchinson's been out he's not having the same success without a big pass rusher on the line but now that Smith is on the line he probably would get the same success but at this point they probably don't want to waste the roster spot just on the third down player. But honestly I don't think they gave him enough time to try to get situated in like acclimated back to playing after a season ending injury. Plus he's a 6 round pick so you can't really expect him to get eight sacks a year ask yourself this, if Houston would have only gotten two or three sacks his rookie year as a sixth round pick, nobody would be holding him to these high expectations like they are now and I guarantee him just now coming to play more snaps within the last four games and having that decent game against the Houston texans, people would probably be praising him right now for playing well. But since he had such a breakout season his rookie year I think the expectations are just way too high and without Aidan Hutchinson on the line he's never going to replicate that type of success. Remember he had a success because Aidan Hutchinson was on that other side we can have it which James Houston benefited from because it opened up lanes for him. But maybe they feel like he's not good in run defense or coverage and they can't use them as a defensive end because he's too small so that limits his playing time basically
And everybody's like talking down on James Houston I mean this dude had dedication, he literally shit his pants on the field and kept going after the quarterback, he was literally shiting on dudes. Pun intended. Does shit your pants and they keep going full speed and not give a shit and go after the quarterback to me should get more credit than anything
Jeff you have to look at the fact that last season he didn't do that good and in the preseason as well so I'm not surprised that they released James Houston
You said you had eight games and only one sack but you can't go off of the games you need to look at the snaps he played I don't believe he's played many snaps until maybe the last three games
