Weird teammates can happen in a beer league. I got asked to play for a triple-A team in Atlanta for a couple of shifts because they didn't have six players to start the game. Skated out to take the opening faceoff and found myself between Guy Chouinard (the summer after he scored 50) and Bill Clement. I was the worst player in the lowest division of the league, but that was a very cool moment.

@@IMAComedy HAH! That would have been pretty epic, but "'Ockey Bill" was still several years in the future at that time. I only played one shift anyway, before the AAA guys came out of the dressing room and I was sent back to the minors. Lost the opening faceoff really badly, but the other center tried to put the puck between my legs and hit me in the shin pad. Puck bounced to Chouinard on right wing, and he stickhandled through the whole other team and scored. Easiest assist I ever got.

I played as a goalie for a "tier 2" group in a summer league in Southern Ontario years ago. For reference I played some junior hockey myself and flushed out being a back up for Steve Mason before he went astronomical quick.... but our summer team bailed 1/3 into the season. It was me (goalie) and one other forward ready to go 5 minutes before our game.
We originally thought the rest of the guys might just be late but eventually the thought sunk in this is gonna be fun to get dressed up and forfeit because we have only 2 guys.
So as luck would have it, there was a game before which had these random "tier 1" guys...this was the league tier with current nhl and some just retired guys or pro Europe, one was even a recent cup winner from the previous season. Paille and Girardi were a couple of them...it became a regular thing eventually that these guys took our ice because our teams essentially didn't show up, so it was for the remainder of the season we had drop ins the rest of the summer.
Apparently the other team had a similar but not as dire issue with their guys so there were a few who played their side...I won't mention the other names but of all the current guys we had out to face off against and with (the other goalie was the local junior A team's starter), we had Biznasty walk in our room. He asked what the hell was going on when he saw the room, it was a hodgepodge of guys from Europe leagues and the previously mentioned NHL guys, (Bissonette was still playing at the time as well)...he came into the dressing room with his bag and everything but said "tier TWO!??...I ain't playing no fucking tier TWOOOO!" and walked out....
We needed the guys, and we had way better players than him in there while he Jimmy jacked off out of the rink...funniest and dirtiest shit ever

Used to despise Kane, when he was an excessively arrogant a**hat back in his WPG/BUF/SJ days. He's changed since that whole ordeal in San Jose though. He's certainly more grounded, and I think he appreciates his position in the NHL far more than he used. He came across as entitled before.
Word was, that he was training with his dad between his SJ days and EDM days, and that his dad gave him the go around on ruining an NHL career. Not sure how accurate that account is, I just remember reading it back when it was ongoing.
In any case, I think Kane is quite different these days, and it's things like these, that you likely wouldn't see him doing back then. Instead, he'd be taking pictures with all his money, and dumb crap like that.
I hope he keeps his head on straight. He's a great piece in Edmonton, and can finish off his career on a high note.

As soon as other players figured out who he really was, some clowns thought it would be fun to try their luck in the physical nature. Not a good idea. I would love to see it if a NHL skater played goalie in beer league, or NHL goalie played a forward, but a skater skating out seems suspect outside a promotional shoot. I am fittin to have a spit here but I will praise Sidney Crosby for being in net for a random beer league team that needed a tendie, and he just kind of went out with out anyone knowing who he was, IIRC he lost and only got found out as he left doffed his gear

I'd be surprised if the Team is going to allow this to go on now that its pubic. This kinda Happened in Wpg 10 years ago with Burmi - I knew the guy personally at the time and he came out to the outdoor a few times and played with the local kids - Im talking 10-12 yr olds - and when Claude Noel found out, Burmi was not allowed to do it anymore because of injury concerns. I had mentioned to Burmi before the Coach found out hat he should come to our beer league to meet some of the boys and just shoot around in warm up even and he was thinking about it. Needless to say after hanging with the kids at River Heights CC that was the end of that idea lol

I was born in Edmonton. Trust me, there's better places to spend your summer. If he's having fun and doesn't get hurt then good for him. Steve McQueen loved dirt bikes and once entered a race under the name Harvey Mushman. No special treatment, no 40 foot trailer with a personal chef, just a regular guy getting filthy and having fun.

If you said, there are better places to spend your "winters" rather than Edmonton, I would maybe understand (even though I like winter so that doesn't apply to me either). Not sure why you would say for no relevant reason that Edmonton is not a great place to spend summers. A lot of people enjoy Edmonton and many players make it their home. Those reasons might not jive with what you like and that is why we luckely can choose where we live. A million+ people disagree with you including Fa Afo. so cheers.

@@darpompie4354 Sorry, should have been a bit clearer. The travel time to Jasper killed me, not the zoo Banff has become. We're in Ontario now and can't wait to leave, gun crime and the friggin humidity. Really bad choice of words on my part.

@@darpompie4354 Sorry, once more and that's it. I can't stand commenters who run and hide so I need to own up to something. I spent the better part of my life in Edmonton but the last few years were ruined by my poor choice of friends and a job that turned to crap. After 30 years we're going back for a wedding and I'll see my only family member who isn't totally dysfunctional. I found out last week my last best friend there had passed away and yesterday my cat got diagnosed with cancer. I should have known better and just turned the computer off but instead shot my mouth off. I'm working on that, it's a long story.

@@dicksonfranssen Hey Dude... Sorry to hear about your friend and your cat. On the 15th will be the 1 year anniversary of the passing of my best friend cat that died, so I know how you are feeling... It's quite devastating and even a year later I miss the guy like crazy but its slowly getting better. Hopefully some good Karma will come your way. And your experience in Edmonton is just that... Yours.... You have every right to feel what every you want about it. I just defend the city every once in a while because I think it gets a bad wrap some times and I didn't think summers was one of the billion reasons that you should hate it here. lol . As you kind of alluded to, I believe no matter where you live, your situation has more to do with it rather than the actual city itself. If you live in the fancy rich part of town, you are going to enjoy it a heck of lot more than if you are struggling to survive in the slums. Bad job or bad friends will do it to you too. I also believe we are all different. Some people love the heat. I can't stand it when it gets over 25C. The last few years its been hovering around 30C day in and day out here and I can't stand it. I can't imagine places that are 40C.
I Have a good friend that moved to downtown Toronto about 20 years ago and I stayed with him several times. Like you mentioned, I was shocked of the crime over there. But the biggest thing that bothered me was commuting. It was like a 3hr plan to get anywhere every freeken day. I always felt my day was eating away just getting from point A to point B. In Edmonton, I can drive across the entire city in 45min. He also now wants to move back but it becomes difficult when you set up roots in a place. The grass always seems greener some where else but then we grow up and priorities change. Anyways...Not a big deal about the city bashing. As I said, I hope things change for the better for you.

The fun never ends! Sorry for the short reply, dog duty is calling.
