So funny, what happened in Frisco Texas that night was unique. The sound was that of a super high repeating motion, but it created a pressure wave and moved very fast. I was literally moved physically by the pressure wave

it's actually just a straight rocket engine on the x-15 but theres another version including an unmanned drone version(D-21) that actually just uses the SR71 engine so it can hit mach 3 within seconds

The X-15 fired its rockets to soar on an upwards arc to the edge of space, coasting up and over through near-vacuum, then falling back into the atmosphere. It was at the peak of that trajectory, with the aft-mounted steering thrusters pointing the ship in random directions, that cryo ice [visible in the pre-drop photos of the X-15] came off the skin and out of the thruster nozzles. You see the same effect at that same altitude and speed when the shuttle jettisons its fuel tank, lots of dancing dots of ice flakes.
