  • Here is a Go lecture featuring two games from the legendary player Go Seigen.
In this lecture you will see two excellent examples of just why Go Seigen was a legendary player and how his games are still very relevant in today's meta. In the first game there's an example of how to handle weak groups, and how to set up a fight where your opponent is forced to make and defend them. If you are player that enjoys studying a game to better your fighting ability, then this lecture is definitely one you will find interesting.
In the second game you'll witness Go Seigen's ability to reduce an area and make exchanges. This, of course, cannot be done without the use of aji, so pay close attention, in both games, how he used every bit of aji to his benefit.

Seeing those two games, makes this lecture title even more perfect than it already is

Kinda funny: a couple hours after watching this game, that awful shape at 40:18--the empty triangle with a tail--came up in a game I was playing. It was fresh in my head, and I pounced. Good times.

Thanks for this. Go Seigen's games really are amazing once you get past that "but it's all old joseki" mental block.

Lee Sedol and Ke Jie are 2 of the only players who have the ability and creativity to match Go Seigen in his prime. I'd say it would be advantage Go Seigen Vs. any of the current top 5 players in the world. His reading matched any of Today's top pro's and probably went beyond theirs. He beat the only other 9 Dan of the 1950's so badly that the guy , Fujisawa , Resigned from the Professional Go Association of Japan in Shame. That's Domination man!
When Go Seigen was on top of his game, he was the strength equivalent of Alphago Master version. He is the only player in Go history that could beat the current version of AlphaGo.

It’s always weird when a nine Dan makes some moves that you would expect from a 20 kyu. It seems like go is about learning to fundamentals until you reach a Dan level, then unlearning them all

So, what in both games happened: Go Seigen traded his enclosed corner with the opponent's middle grp and got access to the center. If i could handle these trades and wouldnt mess up by not killing the opponnent while hes killing me, i would do them all the time. :)

I love Taisha and large avalanche. I don't get the hate; sprawling fights from complicated joseki that take up a 1/4 of the board in which a single mistake might spell death?

You can learn a lot about fighting shapes and vital points through fighting joseki.

I don't get it either. Fighting is both the most exciting and field-leveling aspect of the game. You are born into the world fighting and you leave it fighting too. Watching your savings, kids or flowers slowly grow is for old people. If you don't enjoy the thrill of a complicated fight then you and I are not playing the same game.

we are not. (playing the same game). :) theres nothing i enjoy more
than watching an opponent punch himself out, as one solidly connects and
plays for territory.. those are the games i enjoy the most. sure, one
needs to know how to fight to be a good player, but it seems online,
people just hope to kill the opponent into submission. the chinese knew
what they were doing, an army with no civilians to protect is literally
      useless...

micha'el brownstein just bear in mind the purpose of armies has never been to protect anyone, but to conquer, plunder and beat other people into submission.

well, im not sure the chinese would agree... the whole idea of having two eyes in go represents saving some of the land for people, not just the army. if all you have are soldiers, there no country to fight for... anyway, thats what i read about the philosophy of the game. i agree that throughout history weve seen a great many armies seemingly forget the people theyre meant to protect, but i dont think this is something to emulate, metaphorically or otherwise.. (however, i am ddk, so what do i know...? :)
