    I love the way you did this, framing the games as a way to talk about the company history. Was really interesting to get a retrospective on a company struggle that largely went unnoticed in the barren arcade wasteland that was the UK.

  • @EdwardoFE
    @EdwardoFE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Metal Slug is actually rather fair once you learn the controls and rules of the game. Vehicle and power up placement is usually planned out for upcoming areas and players are rewarded for risky moves by getting better weapons. Controls are smooth on foot(well, they were in the arcade) and the game always lets you know what attacks kill you and what moves don't. Metal Slug 3's mutliple path system allows people to figure out which route works best for their playstyle and encourages experimentation while punishing stupid mistakes.
    that being said some of the bosses are somewhat designed around trial and error, but the game normally gives players a vehicle(with health) beforehand, so that it is possible to see how the bosses attacks even work. Its brutally hard and ridiculously unforgiving, but also the finest kind of that type of game. When you finally get good, its satisfying.
    Metal Slug is certainly not for everyone, that's for sure.

    Story of my childhood: Austria has very strict gambling laws and since Arcade video games have a lose-state, they fall under the designation of a slot machine. Therefore, you can only put them into gambling parlors where minors have no access. So the only time I got to go to an arcade was when my family managed to afford a holiday in Italy all two years or so. And then, I had like 10 quarters per evening for 4 nights. I became a gourmet of arcade machines and seeing some of the old SNKs here really warmed my heart. Good memories.

    Metal Slug 3 is by far the pinnacle of Nazca's amazing series. It has everything they could have absolutely packed into an 83MB cart... soldiers, aliens, mummies, zombies, monkeys, Tons of Slugs (Metal Slug, Elephant, Driller Slug, Marine Slug, Ostrich Slug, etc..)) It even has horizontal and vertical shooter stages! Tons of branching paths, and even a tribute to IREM's (Nazca) previous game In the Hunt. ... ... ... It's really not cheap. You just need to Lear the boss patterns. Such as the one where this guy keeps dying. It's not hard at all. You just have to time the jumps and stay off to the side.

I never paid attention to 'sprite size' until I remember reading that apparently Gunstar Heroes was almost axed here in the West because the execs at Sega hated the tiny sprites. I didn't play a single game on this list and watched this video anyway, because it was so interesting, at least for someone like me who is really interested in gaming history. Shock Troopers and The Last Blade are the two games which stuck out the most for me from here.
    Actually I just realized that I played Metal Slug X on Steam for like an hour and so and closed immediatly because I thought "WTF is this?", but at the same time I was so amazed by the animations and always thought "how the hell did they made this back then?"

      Bunnyhop does not have much knowledgh about snk.
      He literally called Garou a spin off, which its not, he implied that kof 2002 and kof 2002UM are almost the same game, and he barelly skimmed through kof, its a shame if this is your introduction to snk, this video did not make snk justice at all.

  • @Kneefoil

    I got the SNK humble bundle as well, but the only games I've gotten around to trying out so far are Twinkle Star Sprites and Shock Troopers. I dove into them completely blind, not even seeing a single screenshot of either game before playing, and both of them surprised me very positively.
    As a result though, I really appreciate this list because it gives me a good idea of which other games I should try out and which I should avoid. Unfortunate that Shock Troopers 2nd Squad seems to belong in the latter group; I was really looking forward to playing that one just because of how much I enjoyed the first game.

      +berry Box Exactly. He has no idea of what he's talking about. He probably tried it a couple of times, didn't like that you can't shoot diagonally or something equally stupid and blamed it on the game since calling Metal Slug hard is the popular opinion. It's like someone reviewing a Cave game, dying in the first couple of stages and complaining about the difficulty.

    • @xLithiumFlower1
      @xLithiumFlower1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'll give him 2 and 3 since those are more difficult but they're not impossible, 1 however I disagree with because of how easy it is to learn and blast through. It's rough at first yes but it's so forgiving with its enemy placement, weapon placement, and boss designs. Some practice can net you a run under 10 continues easily.

It really sucks that it seems crazy for anyone to expect them to make anything other than ports nowadays. Even if they somehow got the capital for a new title other than KoF they'd be so backed into a corner that it'd be impossible for them to make anything other than a reboot of any of their older franchises.

    A CMVS (consolized MVS cabinet), a MVS multi cart and two Neo Geo joysticks is one of the best purchases you can make for two play couch co-op&VS gaming. It's also a must have if you appreciate pixel art. It'll cost around 700-850 dollars (unless you know how to build a CMVS yourself), but it's so much cheaper than collecting for the AES and you don't have to deal with the load times of the Neo Geo CD. I pretty much stopped collecting for both systems when I got my CMVS, though there are a few exclusives on the Neo Geo CD.

    I love Last Blade. It's a fighting game I found out about just trawling through old fighting games and finding one that made me think of Ruroni Kenshin. (Or at least my memories of it, which I have to say don't hold up under actually watching the show now.) It's the game that got me into actually playing fighting games occasionally. Too bad I was years late to the show.

    George I like your videos, and stuff like this and the sonic video are great, but I have one bone to pick. I was surprised you said Metal Slug 3 is the hardest and most bullshit, its the only one I have extensive experience with. I had so much fun learning the game. Playing coop with a friend who isnt as good with the 2 credit limit and trying to clear the game was one of the best experiences I've had with games. You can outrun attacks, you can find paths that are viable. I was eventually able to clear level 1 2 and up to 3's boss without dying (and Im not super hardcore). That 4 boss death montage, the attacks ARE avoidable, you jump to the side at the homing ghosts, and do your best to dodge the bullet hell stuff. That boss is a challenge, but we found a path through the maggots lair where you can hold onto the shotgun by staying in your slug and burning it down to minimize loss of life. I never beat the final boss but we consistently got there (I could of done it solo by switching off and using the other 2 credits you get if you do that). That boss may be a bitch but the tension, the strategy that comes from being forced to replay (which helps you learn pathing and how not die to the first few levels). Clearing 2's boss and 3 and its boss without dying was thrilling every time, as was the final stretch to the end (and the last level which was so tense because of the continue system). You're probably right about the quarter grubbing, but challenge tuned this game that can be cleared in a negligible amount of time by a skilled player into hours and hours of tense fun. This kind of experience is why games are so appealing as a medium to me. Im not bragging I know people 1cc these games just for real I loved mastering (or getting as close as I could) this game. Hardcores is needed.
    Sorry I love that game and not just for aesthetic or nostalgia. Its the journey man!!! Thanks for pointing out last blade and shock troopers or whatever Ill give em a shot. semper games

      +GameFAN69 69420 My thoughts exactly. There may be some sections that seem unfair, but only on your first playthrough. With a little memorization and reflexes, you can dodge anything (okay maybe not the fourth boss's yellow attack). Plus, getting better at this game is fun and rewarding.
      A true masterpiece.

    My favorite Neo-Geo games are all non-fighters. Here's what I feel are some of the best the Neo has to offer: NAM-1975, Magician Lord, Top Player's Golf, League Bowling, Sengoku 2, Blue's Journey, Top Hunter, Spinmaster, Wind Jammers, Magician Lord, Cyber-Lip, Riding Hero, and Neo-Turf Masters

    I will have to disagree with you, but pretty much everything besides Sengoku 3 was spot on. Sengoku 3 is easily one of the best Beat m ups out there. It translated fighting game standards to a Beat m up, made motions part of the moveset and rewarded you for doing combos. Also, 3 stages? You didnt even finish the game. It had a lot more, and path chosing with character unlocks as you played. One little thing to note, you dont attack with the weapon if there are no enemies nearby, you use the punch button for that. It has a different approach compared to other Beat m ups, and that is what makes it so unique.

    I grew up in Sardegna, Italy and at the only bar near my flat they had the first Metal Slug, and let me tell you I got so good at it playing from the ages of 3-5 (had to stand on a stool just to reach the buttons) that I used to school the local teens and win money off them. Good fucking times.

    SNK's backgrounds, to me, still seem unmatched for the most part, even considering 3d games and stuff by ArkSys. Each time I see the things I'm utterly blown away by exactly how they could have done it with what they had. If it were possible, I'd like to see the thins on display somewhere.
    It's unfortunate that the collection did not include Kizuna Encounter. That game was really interesting, and it's tag system remains a favorite of mine among other games, which are more like Marvel's tag system. Also it has King Lion, who is sublimely silly.
