  • As soon as all this rain from hurricane Sally moves out we are going to be wide open with peanuts and then cotton. Got the cotton picker out and made sure the moisture system works and and got the grease tank filled.

    You pick cotton off the field and I process the cotton at the gin... I separate seed off the cotton, including the shell from the cotton, including other garbage including dirt gins work with huge fans, some blow. Other's suck... there's alot that goes into a gin before turning it on... I started at 17 helping my dad... by the time I was 19 I ran my own GIN in LEESBURG GEORGIA. I brought my crew and at 19 I looked like I was 13 years old... our boss said, WHO'S RUNNING THE GIN, he ran me off the main STAND what makes it turn on and off... he thought I was someone not qualified he ran me off... in the next city a STATE OF THE ART cotton gin was looking for a processor... I stepped in and said I'M YOUR GINNER, he said if you can turn it on, it's yours... inspected all of it, counted my crew and blew the horn 3 times... you hold down the first button 3 seconds the rest comes on by its self... all I turned on was the heaters, I walked through the gin, make sure everything was working... the next day there's 200 modules around the gin... we got to work, it needs to be broken in a few days before turning it up to max... I enjoy running a cotton gin... I also have 4 helpers, I run 12 hours the next person runs the other 12 hours... make sure everything is running smoothly before changing crews... best thing is the BONUS CHECK... my boss said can you run 16 hours a day, the night shift is broke all the time... he gave my crew $4 raise, we worked 16 hours a day for 5 months... we did about 230 thousand bails... my boss was happy with my crews well done job... he said I've never met anyone that work's as hard as you. My boss was happy with our performance, when we went home I paid for the meals until we got home... 10 year's later, I'm still ginning cotton with the same person where we started...

    If those cables are "popping," perhaps they are being caught on something, then finally let go and move forward, like the strings of a guitar being caught at the nut, then the tension gets strong enough to pull it out of the catch ... just a thought. Tell him, Mama. And that cotton picker is quite a machine. Must have cost a small fortune.

    Hey on your bin's it's time you put some rust converter over them so they don't rust thru.
    On the truck your calipers don't slide freely that is why you have this massive uneven wear. Check the sliding pins and grease them once-twice a year. It will prevent this from happening again.

    Very interesting my Dad’s first cotton picker was a John Deere 22 One row picker mounted on a 730 John Deere tractor! We had to hand pump the grease every morning! It came with a special grease tank that i still have. We got a 2 Row 299 John Deere in about 1964, now that was picking cotton Fast! each bar had an grease fitting, 16 bars in the front and 12 in the rear! That took most of the morning plus filling the water tank. My last picker was a John Deere 9930 many improvements over the years! Of course I had several other pickers over the years!

By the way, just out of curiosity what kind of spindle cleaner do y’all use? We run a Case 635 module picker and started off using Case spindle cleaner as recommended but didn’t do good at all. Switched to Superclen spindle cleaner sold at local JD store did better than the first but was wondering what everyone else is using.

      "ponding" is the problem across all of coastal US South. There are good drainage videos posted up in Iowa and Ohio as "back in the day"(100 years ago give or take) they used clay piping as the takeaway. The importance of all that got rediscovered last year after the massive flooding 2018-2019 winter into spring and even summer. Much better season this Year would be an understatement so new drainage systems being installed as a result.

    Does it hurt the peanuts that have been dug to get rained on ?

    • @FieldRows
      @FieldRows  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The more they lay in water the weaker the stems get and will fall off as soon as picker touches them

    I'm honestly worried about your nuts 😁 Can to much rain ruin them?

    • @FieldRows
      @FieldRows  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks you for your concern of my nuts. The long they sit in water the weaker the stems get, when picker hits them they will fall off
