    I’ve had a 7100 for years too, and think it’s great.
    The shutting off on strong signals thing might be due to the power requirements through the head unit cable being too much when the volume is high. The usual fix for that is to use a shorter and / or lower loss cable to connect the head to the base. It’s just a normal network cable.
    I had that problem on mine, but with a decent cable now have no problems with the head 10m away in a different room.

    I've had my 7100 for years, it is flawless in operation. I use the lil tarheel 2, 6 - 80m, no extra power, just the 85 to 100 watts that the 7100 produces. Been the best mobile radio system ive ever owned.

    Dude! I love my IC-7100 as it is my base rig right now and I have had mine since Christmas 2019. I take it mobile in the spring and summer and I use a 20M hamstick. I need to get a Tarheel adjustable mobile antenna like you have. That would be a great upgrade. Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for the 7100 video update, Eric! I remember when ICOM introduced this radio to the market years ago, and recently became interested for one of my own. Planning to install it mobile. Robert of Tarheel Antennas is a friend of mine and lives across town just minutes away. The MFJ controller is also a necessity. Thx again for the videos.

    I've had one in my truck for two years it's a great radio. For the price and features it should have a tuner built in.
    My only advice for tarheel antennas is make sure to remove them when entering parking garages, I really miss mine.

    i love mine too. However, I have to admit, if ICOM released a 705/905 head, bluetooth etc, with sdr tech in a remote base unit with hf+vhf+uhf at 50/100 watt, I would be on the list for pre-order 😆

      Do you know that software called sdr control? It’s not a head, but you can control icom radios from anywhere

      I think an IC-7105 setup, 705 plus plug in box giving you 7100 power, that would be Money!! Totally great idea.

    • @mw0lge
      @mw0lge ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jameski5oeb668 yeah would be amazing. It would be a killer product for sure, but they would have to get the pricing right.

    I have had one about 8 years, no issues touch wood.
    I now use it 90% on Digimodes and also on 40MHz/8M Band
    I use it with a variety of antennas with a MAT-30 Tuner
    It's a no nonsense, work horse.
    I'm considering buying a New one.
    There is no competitor for this size compact Shack In A Box,
    the nearest is the FT-857 it's just to clunky, and much older.

    Interesting that the 7100 costs more than the 7300 on HRO and Giga... (as of Jan, 2024) Great radio. In my work truck also and it looks beat but still works great.

    I have had one of these since 2015 and have only used it a handful of times. I planned on using it mobile too but for some reason i was put off. After seeing this video maybe it’s time to pop it in the van. 73’s M3VWN

    I had to send mine to ICOM repair to fix corrosion on the main circuit board. Other than that I love this radio. My other favorite radio is my Yaesu FT-891. What needs to happen is either ICOM or Yaesu need to come out with a mobile version of the IC-7300 or the Yaesu FT-710.

    I haven’t had any issues with mine turning off until my Bioenno battery gets too low. I was gonna run power to the battery but on my vehicle it would’ve been a major process. I did attempt it but when the 1st screw clip stripped trying to take it off, I gave up right away and ordered a 20Ah battery from HRO. I only charge it once a week with normal mobile usage, twice if I use it for POTA. I’ve made no modifications of the radio and have no problem making 100w peaks with the stock mic.
    On the subject of the stock mic, people have complained about low audio(not to me). I’ve never had that problem, but the tiny hole they put in the front cover is channeled right into the foam piece they use to cushion the mic element. So what I did was drill a small 1/16” hole just above it right over the mic element and I can see using the radios power meter that my average power increased allowed me to lower the mic gain to 20%.

    I use my IC-7100 mainly for 70cm, 2M, and D-Star. I use my IC-7300 for HF & 6M.

  • @JonathanAdami
    @JonathanAdami 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Have mine for 7 years, the internal battery is flat so I don't have the time anymore (I imagine DStar is impacted but I don't use it) but it's still going strong! The only issues I've had: I never got more 50W on SSB and the jack plug for the speaker is fiddly. I cover mine tho, Australian sun destroys anything so I won't try my luck.

    I did have an IC7100, but found it unfriendly for mobile use. Its amazing that Icom has re-released it recently, so it must be a popular radio! - I would have liked to see another updated version, but who knows, perhaps Icom is working on this for 2025?

    I've been very frustrated with my 7100 as the SWR remains very high on the graph despite webbed ground straps and heavy duty guage ground to the negative terminal of the battery. I've tried the Little Tarheel as well as the Shark Ham Sticks. I travelled from Virginia to Florida yesterday and had QSOs on the OMISS net. Net control was in Michigan and had another QSO with a Rhode Island station. I kept it brief owing to the high SWR. Any suggestions please?

    It looks like you still have the protective plastic on the display. It's there to prevent scratches during manufacturing. The end user is supposed to remove it. Thanks.

    The screen just needs to be like the 7300 or the 9700. I hope icom does this but makes the screen able to resist sun damage. Or at least make it so you can swap out screens easily. Teslas have tablet screens.

    I feel that one of the major downfalls or problems with this radio is you cannot Cross Band repeat with it. I can get by with an extrernal antenna tuner hidden someplace in my trunk but what is absolutely a horrible failing is the Japanese have absolutely failed by not putting Cross Band repeating capabilities in this radio.

    Your IC-7100 is NOT type accepted to be used in the business band on 453MHz. It is likely these services are using narrow-band FM. If it is, you're at risk of causing interference *because you're not using type accepted equipment*. There's a reason they go through that process, and this is why.
