People who can " sing" are a dime a dozen...but only singers like Linda Eder give the listener the full emotional impact that great music deserves.. believing the lyrics, i think, is key..there has to be something there behind and beyond the words..Also she has great lungs ! TRUE talent... beautiful song too !
Frank Wildhorn is not only an amazing composer, but a stellar accompanist! Also helps that a gorgeous woman who happened to be your wife, is standing in front of you singing the beautiful piece you wrote!
while she signed my Playbill I was telling her how I listen to Jekyll and hyde all the time. she looked me in the eye and said "i'll bet you sing along too". what else could I say but- "BUSTED!!".
For me there’s no one who performs this beautiful song better than Linda. No matter how many times I listen to it, I still get goosebumps every time. She is pure class
4:05 & 4:11-4:23 when she belts out, here, I literally get goosebumps every time. I mean EVERY TIME!! I just can’t explain in words how extraordinarily amazing Linda is. Bravo. Bella
My wife saw Linda Eder on The Today Show some years ago and told me about her. We were about to leave the NYC metro area in 2004 and got 3rd row tickets to see Linda Eder in concert with the Boston Pops at Radio City. WOW. What an evening, sadly capping it off with her own rendition of NY NY. We hated leaving. Been a fan ever since - crystal clear perfect pitch voice at any volume, very little vibrato, if any. Barbra Steisand comparisons? PULLEASE. Streisand is too nasally and can't hold a candle to Eder. I listen to this song so often. Timeless. Incomparable. Spectacular range, volume control, and tonal quality. Perfection.
YOU CAN FEEL THE WARMTH OF LOVE FILLING THE ROOM. WHAT MADE THIS SONG SO MEMORABLE IS THAT IT WAS SANG BY HIS WIFE WHILE THE HUSBAND COMPOSED IT AND PLAYED THE PIANO. LOVABLE PAIR. BUT IT DID NOT LAST.
The last refrain , Linda takes you to a place that seems impossible to reach - her voice blooms with power and clarity - the sound the heart makes when it’s overflowing with love . Beautiful !
A combination of Barbara, Whitney and Shirley Bassey. Powerful, sweet and artistic. Nonetheless, a very distinct voice of Linda Eder. She is a great talent.
Linda Eder is a wonderful performer but anyone who thinks her rendition of this song compares in any way to Lea Salongas is dreaming. No pause, no fading from one level to another with her voice, unparalleled enunciation and raw emotion. This does not diminish Linda Eder in any way, yet Lea Salonga stands alone as the greatest female singer ever. Listen to the two renditions and judge for yourself. No contest.
@@donschmidt8203 I did. I prefer linda's. Pauses reflect emotion and so does fading. There's nothing inferior about doing that in respect to not doing that, both are clearly artistic choices and linda's fit better for the role. Lea is my favourite broadway artist, so you can tell I'm giving it from a totally unbiased view. This is a cry of desperation and linda's power is up to the task to reach the sky. The grit, the power in her lungs, the rawness and distortion of her voice represent her character to the bone. Lea's voice is too crystal and clear for lucy type of down in the dumps character (with a hint of cockney) (just like fantine), the role requires some resistance in your voice. Linda was made for this role and her rendition will always be the best. The climax of the song blows my socks of with linda. You need down and dirty here not clear and angelic. Don't get me wrong. Lea has perfected the formula to deliver any song with proper form of emotion, perfect diction and voice. But her voice type is not the best for any song. She's a storyteller but that doesn't mean she will deliver all songs the best. Pleasant and clear doesn't always mean best in broadway. If that was so, you'd have everyone trying to be like lea. Lea is an artist who can sound great in any song. But that's not the point. Again, don't get me wrong..lea has been kim, she has some similarities to this character. I mean technically, kim can also count as down in the dumps character. But the reason lea works as kim but not lucy because of how young kim is. And then the narrative changes to her being a mother and then lea's voice is completely appropriate for that. Lucy is the kind of character who's a smartass because she's seen all. She thinks she knows all men and is cynical as heck about it. But when for the first time she gets hope..that's the fading for. Because she's an older character , so her voice fades in that nostalgic but hopeless (because she's cynical) type of way as she thinks about her miserable past. Kim was young, so her voice is still filled with naivety and is timid in comparison because of the fear she has. (That's why her voice works so well on characters like Kim and even eponine.) When kim gets hope with sun and moon, it's more eager while when lucy gets hope it's constrained, hence the pauses. Kim's voice matures but it's more in the motherly "I am a dignified woman now", fashion. People have their own preferences. I'm not dreaming or delusional to think linda's is superior.

True. And I know they divorced, and all... but I don't think I could ever keep a straight face without crying, if I had to stare at my husband the entire time I sang such a sweet song.
Beautiful song sung wonderfully by Ms. Eder. Love how when she hits the high note she winks at Frank Wildhorn on the pian. Saw her in J&H and she was fantastic, wish she would have done other shows on Broadway.
It is indeed an incredible song, sung by a most amazing voice. I truly cannot imagine anyone else bringing such beauty and depth to the glorious music and lyrics.

Judy Collins and Barbra Streisand are both totally overrated as singers. They sing with the power and intensity of a rag mop. I enjoy much of linda eders work, but I stand by lea salonga as unquestionably the greatest singer I have ever heard. She becomes each character of a song she performs. There are no flaws vocally or spiritually. I challenge every fair and objective listener out there to put aside where she comes from and truly appreciate this unprecedented talent. If she were a white American singer instead of Filipino more people would recognize her for what she is, simply the best. What I love about les mis is that it is probably the best musical ever for two reasons. Number one the incredible score and and also that they gave Lea Salonga the opportunity to play eponine and also her mother fantine in later years. The fact she wasn't white was irrelevant in their decision. There is a reason it's called acting! Surf you tube or any other medium for this womans work and you will see an unmatched treasury of musical artistry. Throw out that she isn't white. That has no place in a fair society.
I honestly think she's over rated. You can hear vocal strain, some of her vowel placement is so weird and a lot of her timbre gets stuck in the back of her throat. Yuck.
You can see they were so in love then, so sad it did not last. One of the greatest female vocalists of all time.

lyrics:
I peer through windows
Watch life go by
Dream of tomorrow
And wonder why
The past is holding me
Keeping life at bay
I wander lost in yesterday
Wanting to fly
But scared to try
But if someone like you
Found someone like me
Then suddenly
Nothing would ever be the same
My heart would take wing
And I'd feel so alive!
If someone like you
Found me!
So many secrets
I long to share
All I have needed
Is someone there
To help me see a world
I've never seen before
A love to open every door
To set me free
So I can soar If someone like you
Found someone like me
Then suddenly
Nothing would ever be the same
There'd be a new way to live
A new life to love
If someone like you
Found me
Oh, if someone like you
Found someone like me
Then suddenly
Nothing would ever be the same
My heart would take wing
And I'd feel so alive!
If someone like you
Loved me!
Loved me!
Loved me!
