Sangeetha Kalanidhi Maharajapuram Santhanam (Tamil: மகாராஜபுரம் ஸந்தானம்), (December 3, 1928June 24, 1992) was one of the great Carnatic music vocalists of the 20th century. He was born in Sirunangur, a village in the state of Tamil Nadu. He followed the footsteps of his father Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer who was also a Carnatic singer.
Besides studying with his father, he was also a disciple of Melattur Sama Dikshitar. Maharajapuram Santhanam was also a distinguished composer. He wrote many songs on Lord Murugan and Kanchi Shankaracharya, His Holiness Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati Swamigal (Maha Periyavar). He was the Principal of Ramanathan College in Sri Lanka. Later he came and settled in Chennai. The songs which were popularised by Maharajapuram Santhanam are,"Bho Shambo" (Revati), "Madhura Madhura" (Bagheshri), both composed by Swami Dayananda Saraswati, "Unnai Allal" (Kalyani Raga), "Sadha Nin Padhame gathi, Varam onnru" (Shanmukhapriya), "Srichakra Raja" (Ragamalika), "Nalinakaanthimathim" (Ragamalika),"Ksheerabdi kannike" (Ragamalika) among others. The Maharajapuram Santhanam Day is celebrated on the 3rd of December every year.
He died in a car accident on June 24, 1992. His sons Maharajapuram S. Srinivasan, Maharajapuram S. Ramachandran, and his primary disciple Dr. R. Ganesh are now carrying on his musical tradition.
His other most popular songs are Purandaradasa kritis: "Narayana ninna" (Shuddha Dhanyasi) and "Govinda ninna". His rendition of "Vilayada ithu nerama muruga" was without parallel. His renditions were full of Bhakthi.

Lord Loves those who are very chosen children and Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam is no exception. Within a short span of his life, he mesmerized one and all with his beautiful rendering of so many divinely songs and he may not be with us today, but the legacy he left behind including his sons and his topmost sishyar Shri Dr. R. Ganesh will carry his mantle forever and ever. I am very fortunate to listen to Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam on various occasions at various Sabhas. Every time when I listen to Shri Santhanam Sir, I feel so light, so wonderful and feel that I am with God Almighty. Especially when I listen to the Kriti: GOVINDAA NINNA NAAME CHANDA BY SHRI PURANDARADASAR, I feel like that I do not want to live in this world any more and be with God Almighty immediately.

When it comes to Carnatic music that is most soothing and touches the soul, it is next to impossible to beat Santhanam. Surely, there are a lot of Maestros who exhibit more creativity and explore way more, but with sufficient creativity built into a well defined structure this Bhava filled music can reach the lowest rung of listeners like no other singer. Today I listen to all maestros and love them for whatever they bring in, but I must confess that I started listening to Carnatic music and got hooked on to it with this "all time great" legend!
Must add: What out-of-this-world accompaniment by the Maestros Lalgudi Jayaraman on Violin and Vellore Ramabhadhran on Mridangam! Those who want to feel blissed out listening to Carnatic music, listen to this collection...

I was fortunate to attend many of his concerts since the 70s. His rendering of Arabhi, kalyani, kalyana-vasantha, etc etc still ring in my ears. Thanks for bringing back memories.

I have held Lt shree Sangeetha kalaanidhe MAHARAJAPURAM SANTHANAM in high esteem as a classical vocalist. the FIRST IMPRESSION i had of this great artist was, when as a college-going student, i chanced to listen to him in one of the famous concerts arranged in MYSORE on the occasion SREE RAMANAVAMI CELEBRATIONS.....I WAS transfixed, spellbound listening to him singing one of his best ''Endaro Mahanubhavudu''...the rendition stopped me in my tracks.

My favourite among his renditions are Narayana ninna namada in i think is nalinakanthi , bhuvaneshwariya in mohana kalyani and ninne nammithinaiyya in simhendramafjuamam
