I think Sanderson is an amazing gateway into fantasy for a lot of people. And I think everyone who reads Sanderson a lot in the beginning of their journey hold him in super high regard. He writes complex/unique magic and has a complex universe, but I feel like his books are super accessible in an overly simple way. Just something about the writing doesn't do it for me. The more I read other authors, the more I just can't get into his writing anymore It's such a weird thing because I want to love his stuff and everyone around me praises his books as the best things ever... but I just cannot read his works without it being a slog or I just don't finish them
I agree with The Silverblood Promise and gave it 3 stars. I've read the first 150 pages of The Curse of the Mistwraith twice. I'll for sure read it eventually, agree that the writing style/prose can be very difficult to jive with
Oh man that’s not exactly getting me amped to try Curse of the Mistwraith, so I’ll start with Empire trilogy and Hell’s Chasm to dip my feet in with Wurts before diving into the deep end. I loved Shogun-LOVED IT!!! Nice to see someone not love Silverblood Promise to balance out all the praise it’s been getting-I’m in no rush to start book 1s anyway so I like having my fomo lessened 😅

Ooh I went to Lake Tahoe a couple years ago. I loved it there. I will definitely go back one day, but we try to vacation somewhere different every year. You should definitely read the Janny Wurtz Empire series. It doesn't feel like a series that was written in the 80s. The main character, Mara of the Acoma, is a badass lady.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews yeah...I live in Memphis, so it's much more of a trek. But that's the case for any cool places we go on vacation. There's not much cool stuff around Memphis.
Matt, I'm curious to know if you read Mistborn or First Law first? Because once I read First Law I really found it difficult to enjoy Sanderson as much as I used to
I disagree completely with your take on Silverblood Promise. I thought it was great, especially the relationship between the two main characters. It's in my personal top ten of the year so far.
I am in the minority of people who loved the Stover series... It does date itself though... And I absolutely love Wurts books and the writing is consistent throughout, so if it doesn't speak to you, it's just not your thing...
I didn't like Silverblood either. I dnf'd about 40% in. My issue was it felt too Whedonish, had an uncompelling frat boy of an MC, and the general description of the world felt incredibly bland.

Yeah my parents have a timeshare there so we go once or twice a year. It helps that I only live a couple hours away from it!
