I got the blue and purple categories first and struggled with the other two. "Jazzercize" and "Paralympics" jumped out at me immediately and I started looking for other portmanteaux.
I struggled so much early that I looked for purple and found it. I was in 2% of the population to find purple first. Then I found yellow pretty quickly. Green was a struggle for a while. I can say I learned something, what a portmanteau is. 3 points with no misses: 💜, 💛, 💚. This was rated as a 5 - toughest on the scale, with 55% of players failing.
“Zanadu is a movie.” This is a perfect line. Olivia Newton John and Gene Kelly in a disco roller skating musical from 1980. It was just a slightly weird movie.
Spelled with an "X" it refers to a city in an unfinished poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, where a "pleasure dome" was built under the aegis of Kubla Khan. I used to sit in English class and imagine what this city was like. I was sad that he never finished the poem.
In case you were wondering, a Portmanteau (pronounced Port-mon-toe) is a contraction of two words to coin a new one: For example smoke and fog to make smog, or stow and cache to make stash. PARALYMPICS : Paraplegic Olympics. They obvious dropped the plegic part to avoid that negative connotation. JAZZERCISE : Jazz Exercise POKEMON : Pocket Monster (okay, this was obvious to me but I can see not everybody knowing this) ポケット モンスター is shortened to ポケモン (poketto monsutaa : pokemon) WIKIPEDIA: Okay, Pedia comes from Encyclopedia. Wiki I don't know where that comes from but a wiki is a coined word to refer to a detailed step-by-step guide or explanation of a a process.
@@auldfouter8661 apparently so. I looked up the origin of Wiki and Miriam Webster tells me: "Today, wikis are common stops on the information superhighway; however, they only date to 1995, after computer programmer Ward Cunningham introduced his software WikiWikiWeb to the world. A site using the software is referred to as a wiki." So, that indeed makes Wikipedia a Portmanteau.
if anyone got "portmanteaux" they should just retire from the game because they will never get better than that. Portmanteaux is a word that is a blended word. The only Ketchum's I know are Hank Ketchum (Dennis The Menace comic Strip) and Hal Ketchum (country singer). Rosebud is the sled form the movie Citizen Kane.
I didn't think of the word "portmanteau", but I recognized that they were words blended to create new words ...the definition. Jazz exercise Wiki encyclopedia (although "wiki" was a brand new term at the time) Para Olympics (para is not in reference to any disability though, it means "next," because they are scheduled next/after the regular Olympics) Pokemon is a shortening of "Pocket Monsters"
This one annoyed me quite a bit. Right away I saw a Citizen Kane reference with Xanadu, Rosebud, Snowglobe and Shangri-la and it turns out to be a red herring 😠 After that failure, I could only muster the yellow and nothing else I tried was even one away. Pretty much a complete failure for me today.
i got the portmanteaux first for some reason, they just jumped out at me. didn't get the purple category except by elimination, never would have seen that. "Ketchum" is the last name of the main character from the Pokemon cartoon, so that was supposed to be a red herring.
Yikes. I found this one straightforward, almost super easy in fact. I got a perfect solve in green yellow light-blue and purple order. So it was painful to watch you struggle. As it goes you have solved puzzles perfectly that I've struggled with, such as the REX VEX PERPLEX and HEX puzzle that STUMPed me. I failed that one. Green was easy because I remembered to look for that sort of thing. Remember the "Things with needle/s" (where COMPASS TURNTABLE PINE TREE and SEWING KIT went together)? Yeah, I learned from that! So, the portmanteau was maybe hard for others because they didn't know Pokemon is short for Pocket Monster. I admit, not everybody would know that.
I got yellow first then green. I got the PORTMANTEAUX catagory, but didn't know what it was called, for all but Pokemon. I thought Pokemon was a Japanese word so that threw me off. I had to get the purple catagory before the blue in order to rule out all but Pokemon. This puzzle was nuts!
Pokemon is short for pocket monster. This is what allowed me to easily find the light blue category after clearing green and yellow in short order. Purple was then easy to see at this stage. Easy perfect solve. I thought the puzzle was easy and was expecting the Bot to predict 2/5 (fairly straightforward) if I had access to it (they put it behind a paywall). Now that I reflect, not all that many may know Pokemon is a contraction, so maybe that's why others might find the puzzle harder than I did.
this one was a pain in the butt, really threw me off with pokemon and ketchum (Ketchum is the last name of the main character in the Pokemon cartoon), Surprised that the utopia wasnt a first try, practically ther only easy one here
I understand Jazz+Exercise=Jazzercise, and Paraplegic+Olympics= paralympics, and I assume Wikipedia references an encyclopedia, but what word does "Wiki" represent and I have no clue about either word in Pokemon.
I found today's puzzle to be totally ridiculous and am only watching to see if Doug keeps his cool. I called the yellow "mythical places" which is my only point if it counts. Edit: Yes, Doug did fine. No whining, just some subtle stuff to let us know today's puzzle was mostly bs.
It certainly overloads your brain right off. Once I got the first one (utopia - although that's a poor definition of those four) it started slowly falling into place and I made no mistakes. 🟨🟦🟪🟩
I got them all, except the category for the purple eluded me. The reveal just caused a "Krusty the Clown" groan from me.
The only category I got today was the yellow “utopia” category. Tomorrow is another day.
"Ketchum" threw me for a loop too, Doug!

Yellow, Purple, Green and then a blank stare at the blue. Nope

yeah dude i got no idea

Jazz exercise
Wiki encyclopedia (although "wiki" was a brand new term at the time)
Para Olympics (para is not in reference to any disability though, it means "next," because they are scheduled next/after the regular Olympics)
Pokemon is a shortening of "Pocket Monsters"
Ketchum is also a city in Idaho, which you need to fly to in order to go to Sun Valley. At least that was true when my husband and I went there. ⛷️⛷️

😢
I saw the blue early. It was my first play, but I was one away because I included paypal. I backed off and then did yellow and green.
Ketchum refers to Ash Ketchum the main character in the pokemon anime, almost managed a PRO today but guessed yellow and green in wrong order
I knew him as Satoshi and I figured they had to translate to the name to something in English, so I guess that's what it is.

BLUE - YELLOW - PURPLE - GREEN Green was hardest for me. Did not make that connection: Things you shake.
i didnt like the portmanteau category. but i got shake, utopia then friendly names which i felt pretty good about
Got 🟦 first because I know about blending words (or portmanteaux) like "cosplay" (costume play). Kinda tricky. Then 🟩🟨🟪 after.
This was very confusing initially and then got purple first(What do I do with Ketchum?) and then got the rest easily.

I learned that Pokémon is a Portmanteau word today, and also what it means. That was my error, including "mon" with the "friend words."
You actually said "two words in one", but you did not know that it means "portmanteau". 😀Most of us did not know either.

When you said Paypal would either involve "Pay" or "pal", I thought you were going to get it, but then you didn't follow up on it
I didn’t get the last two either.
just yellow and purple and complained a lot about PORTMANTEAUX , I still dont get it!
Basically just means brand names that are combinations of other words. Pokemon being a combination of the words Pocket and Monster for example.
@@thorneto2742 oh wow, ok thanks! Seeing the comments, some of you actually got it!, I am impressed!
@thorneto2742 Not just brand names 😊
Um ok
