Gosh I don't think I've ever seen such a fuss made of over any AC loco before, never mind an 87!....literally swarms of people crowding round at Paddington! Remarkable!
For those (including myself) old enough to remember the British Rail blue era of the 1970s and 80s the railways now are in some ways unrecognisable. 30 or 40 years ago each region seemed to be quite distinctive and if someone had told me back then that there would be class 87s in Paddington and regular Deltic mainline runs I probably would have thought they were mad. In a funny kind of way I miss the grit and grime of the BR era which I think was a better time to be a rail enthusiast.
They were such great days but I must say at the time I didn't appreciate what we enthusiasts had, I wish we still had loads of locos and BR. Thank you for your interest in my video. Regards Mike.
I must say that I preferred the British built locos and rolling stock of the BR era. It just seemed to be more solidly built and had real character too. I also think that the old mk1s and 2s were in many ways more comfortable than todays stock.
Thanks for sharing. Totally insane watching for someone on the other side of the World, that used to go as a kid to London in the late 1970s to see Westerns at Padd, Deltics/40s at KX, 45/1 at St.Pancras ,81-7 at Euston, 31/0 & 37 at Liverpool St. All in BR corporate blue!
This comment of yours brought back lots of memories for me going to all them London station and seeing proper locos all round them stations. So thank you for taking a look a my video from that great day when a class 87 went into Paddington for the first time.
Great video, I missed that great event.... The method of driving through the GWML neutral sections must have been interesting. IIRC on the GW each neutral approach has standard lineside warning signs but on the track uses a balise-based system designed for the 800s instead of traditional APC magnets to open then re-close the breakers.
Glad to see so many ordinary people taking an interest in her at Pad (not least the Black gentleman in the suit). It's the captivating howl that draws people! No clag or fumes, just move the reverser and.... heavenly sound comes out. Long may she live.
The Class 87 whine reminds me of the war siren I've heard in Plymouth around 14/15 years ago - crumbs I hope no-one living nearby thought that was this sort of alarm that sounded 😉!
A 25kv AC loco has visited Paddington in the past, I'm referring to the GWR designed gas turbine loco 18100 subsequently converted to 25kv AC, although it wasn't 25kv AC at the time, this probably doesn't count !
Great video, I’m in the pic with the 87!! it was an amazing tour well put together by GBRf and plenty of others ! Plenty of historic achievements throughout the journey! Cheers Dazza
Superb Mike, very well covered little piece of history there with the first AC loco working on the GWML - who could have foreseen that a few years ago! Love the roar of those old AC's, and hopefully 87002 and sister 86's will find some use when the Mk5's go into service as they don't have the necessary Dellner couplers for them.
Wow! A class 87 in Paddington! I'm surprised that Caledonian sleeper still use a class 87. Great video, always looking forward to seeing your videos in my notifications!
Makes a change from those appalling IEPs. Notice the ends of the platforms at Didcot Parkway all fenced off for the Buddleia to grow behind. I am surprised Network Rail co operated with running this tour as if they had there way no railtours would run at all.
Really? Regular steam over Shap, for example, regular steam west of Bristol, either of which was almost unheard of under BR? Deltics, Westerns (when they're working) and Class 40s on the main line?
That is very true. The thing that really depresses me is seeing the infrastructure going to wreck and ruin with buddleia everywhere. No one seems to care anymore.
Well it has to be said that if it wasn't for the Network Rail charter train planners at MK, then there would be no tours! NR work very hard to ensure that they continue to run. Its rising traffic levels which make them difficult to run.
We had more sunshine than bad weather throughout the tour , so I don’t really know what you’re on about? Even sunshine in the West Highland leg , you can’t get wet inside the coaches unless you spill your drink 😜
Well, there was Storm, whatever it was called, Stormy Daniels or am I getting confused, the wires down on the East Coast and big red triangles all over National Rail Enquiries shouting "DO NOT TRAVEL!!".
@@AndreiTupolev And I suppose you could have predicted that would happen if you organised the tour then. cancelling on the day is not an option unless you are prepared for hefty bills. which would wipe out the profit and even with a re run would make a loss
Cracking vid bud. Can you or do you remember the times on this. I.E. what time you through reading. Arrival into pad. Did you go down fast lines or relief lines. Sorry for all questions. Was thinking of putting this into a scenario for Railworks. Lol.
@@antman09ful1 thank you. I was Gunna try and turn it into a train SIM scenario. There is a new route out called western mainline electrification and it's overhead from tilehurst to Paddington. So I was Gunna recreate this class 87 job. You have been helpful. And if you do trainsim 2020. Then I will let you no and credit you with timings. Many thanks bud. Take care.

Well mate history was made that night at Paddington.
Thank you for taking a look.

How true, also with a few exceptions like the five german rail busses for example, all rolling stock was British built. WTF happened?

Them Mk 1s and 2s and even 3s are the royal train compared to today plastic rubbish.
Made my century watching this, something I never thought I'd see years ago as a young spotter, absolutely amazing to see an 87 in Pad!!!!
It was so good to see this 87 in Padd as you say, but give me back the times when the station was full of class 31 47 50 and 52.
antman09ful1 Yes definitely better times back then.
There are some locomotives with a noise so iconic you know instantly what is there. A/C Electrics, Deltics, Class 37's to name a few. Great video.
Couldn't agree more with your comment.

Yes it was a great bit of history on our railway. cheers for watching.
great to see an 87 at Paddington but miss the sounds of the class 52s and dmu 117s

That’s true mate. and finger crossed a class 92 this year. Thanks for watching.
I live in Swindon. Really sad that I missed those lovely views. Great footage by the way. Well done.
Oh Peter that's bad luck, but thank you for watching my footage. Regards Mike.
A truly historic day. Who would have thought that would happen. Well filmed
😁 😁
It certainly was, pleased I made it down there.

That's a interesting comment, thank you for taking a look.
Mitchell Hurd, you took the words out of my mouth, the class 87 whine must have been modelled on the air raid siren of the 2nd world war!

First Dazza I must thank you for watching my video, I was pleased I was able to get down there and film this bit of railway history.

Does the sleeper stock have different couplings from the TPX stock then? Class 47s can couple to that.
Don't know mate.
Great to capture this rare moment. Well done for making the effort.
Thanks Paul it had to be done.
Too late for me to see at Reading, had to go home. This the first time I've heard the new 73's go by. It seems strange not to hear the 'EE Thump'.
Oh that's a shame, but thanks for watching.
Wow! A class 87 in Paddington! I'm surprised that Caledonian sleeper still use a class 87. Great video, always looking forward to seeing your videos in my notifications!
Well Mr Chan I hope I can keep on giving you exciting video like this. Thank you for watching. Mike.
Brilliant collection of clips. Thanks for this Mike.
Will it ever happen again Ed ????????? Thanks for taking a look.

you sound very negative
No just nothing decent ever happens on the railway now, it is slowly being killed of by the disease of privatisation.

Something to treasure this footage Mike.....great stuff.....Trevor.''
Yes I will save this footage Trevor, pleased I was able to see this event, but It was very windy at times. Regards Mike.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Beauty, and a beast too!

@@antman09ful1 Thank you Very much! Indeed...great archive!
Fantastic footage!
Thanks very much mate.
WOW excellent capture my dear friend
Interesting to see a 87 at Padd Mike. I liked this video
GREAT STUFF mate.
Hopefully plenty of life left in 87002 for years to come.....now can we have some enthusiast charters ???
That would be great.
Looks like you had a busy but productive night ;)
It was well worth it Phil, than you for watching. Regards Mike.
Good video mike nice detail.... bought a lot of enthusiasts to the platform.....
Thanks Ian for watching, I was happy I could get down there to capture the event on film. Cheers Mike.
They didn't pick the best time for a four day tour, with Severe Weather and national Rail Enquiries shrieking at you "DO NOT TRAVEL!!!"
Well yes, but when it is organised you hope the weather will be OK, I got wet all day yesterday filming the 37s to Penzance so I was well p__sed off.
We had more sunshine than bad weather throughout the tour , so I don’t really know what you’re on about? Even sunshine in the West Highland leg , you can’t get wet inside the coaches unless you spill your drink 😜

Think Reading was about 20.00hrs
Paddington about 20.30 ish
When down the slow to Reading then fast I believe.

I think you could be right mate. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic video, deffitly odd seeing this at Paddington!

Was'nt it great to see a class 87 in Paddington. Kyle.
A class 87...and not a face mask in sight....both happy days of a bygone time.....
Yes. say no more.
A bit like seeing Justein Beiber singing in Deep Purple........so WRONG
I agree with your music statement, but not the other.
