    Did a swap to the Kenetek t4b optocell and also shanged the 2 shina tubes "12ax7" to vintage Motorola/NOS GE 6072a/12ax7- year 1961!
    The sound was another compressor, didn't sound as a "La2" at all. It was less punchy, less saturation.
    The original GAP optocell is more punchy and warmer in the lower mids, the Kenetek T4b is more creemy, not so useful in this compressor. I swap the optocell to the original GAP-optocell and kept the vintage tubes in it! Wonderful mids, less lowend and smoother highfrek.

      @@andivax I disagree. I was given the 87 and the 47 to try and they were junk. Very much overpriced for what they are. If you’ve never use the real versions you’ll probably think there’s junk is wonderful. But since I own 87‘s and 47‘s, 1176, LA2a etc. my perspective is probably different than most people that are hobbyist. I think if you’re 16 years old living in your moms basement trying to do hip-hop you’ll think their stuff is wonderful. Thanks (again) for the great content. If I understand well the Comp2A (just as the LA-2A) works on the sound through tubes and transformers (signal path) and an opto-compressor. Would you ever consider using two Comp2A on your mixbus, just using the signal path (zero compression) to fatten the sound up? And even insert the two comp2A in your SSL fusion, to benefit from optional M/S processing with two Comp-2As?

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kind of.. watch my series on compressor topology. 2A uses the opto cell to do the gain reduction and the tubes are in the signal path. Vari Mu uses the actual tubes to do the gain reduction.
      2bus? It's a "never say never" situation, I'd put anything else before that on my 2bus.

    @ETwOneE21 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sounds good for the price. Although I don't hear what I like about LA2As. Also it seems to have quite a strong midrange boost. Which wasn't enjoyable on the acoustic, but well welcomed on the beat.
    On the other hand, I've never though about abusing an LA2A like this for saturation. I might try that next time in the studio ;).

    • @WheelieMix
      @WheelieMix 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got an original LA2A ? (Not reissue). That's quite amazing.
      It seems "cleaner" in terms of freq response. But again I am just hearing through TH-cam.
      I don't know I hear some quite of boost. Especially on the acoustic guitar. Or maybe it's just volume boost putting the little EQ inconsistensises more upfront ?
      It def get the job done. Especially as a saturation unit. I was quite surprised by that tbh !

    • @WheelieMix
      @WheelieMix 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting. And that's true. Old LA2A can be quite inconsistents. I also think than "cleaner" LA2 like this one is a better option for more modern track (more precise and versatile) and less of a pain to maintain in good shape too.
      I have been lucky to always work with old LA2A that were sounding very "clean" (I mean "clean" for an old LA2A haha). YMMV :) !

    if i plug a sure SM7b into this, will i still need to put a preamp after it before going into my SSL 2 audio interface? or will this thing provide some extra gain so i dont have to crank the SSL's gain into its noise zone just to get a decent signal for recording.

    • @mixbustv

      Every time you have a mic, you need a preamp. And the mic needs to be connected to it. You can't put a compressor before the preamp
