There should still be the option to audition at the casting agency. Sometimes you don't have a reader or a good space for taping or your phone stops recording properly (this happened to me) and you are so strapped for funds to afford all the stuff you need for a good self-tape. I understand why people may prefer them -- and it is nice to be able to re-do your reading but there's a downside. And it's not necessarily democratizing the process because some people have nicer set ups than others.
The best way my English teacher recommended is at first to give a short speech about your motivations. I mean why you wanna audition for this film, why the crew should choose you, what you can bring for them...etc and the second take, show your acting skills or other skills (martial arts...for example). It is really hard when competing against thousands and thousands. Just keep your fingers crossed...The self-tape audition is a good exercise if you fail to get a part. In the labor market, some corporations demand self-recorded tape in addition to your cover letter and your resume. Never discourage yourself after a failure !
In the room, there are often crappy readers who give you nothing. They are purposely making it hard. Typical arrogant casting assts. But self taping is just another way to make the actor work harder, buy more stuff, and let the casting directors do less work. Hate it, except that I dont have to fight traffic and find parking for an audition.
And having to pay for self tape coaching. No place is cheaper than $75 for an hour. I’d prefer to fight traffic and get the notes directly from the casting director, than pay min $75 for outside coaching, not knowing what the CD is looking for. 💁♂️
