Ian Gillan said like this, and Richie Blackmore started making up a guitar riff on the spot. Gillan started improvising some lyrics on the spot too. Ian Pace started tapping out a beat on his lap. Legend has it that the song was so complete that they played it that very night at the gig. This TH-cam cover version is excellent.

Loved the mild embellishments on the behalf of the guitarist and keyboard player. Drums, bass and vocals were just as superb. So....this now ranks as the best cover of Highway Star that I've heard! Great job guys! I'd like to hear you guys cover some Whitesnake too, I bet it would rock!

One thing I notice when people cover Purple is that nobody who can hit the highs like Ian Gillan has such a powerful rich midrange like he did. I guess that kind of power and the insane range he had don’t come together very often.
