Yes, even Rory Gallagher/Jimi Hendrix/SRV as great as they are, blend into mindless shredding after a few bars for me. Whereas Knopfler spans many different guitars and textures and makes them all sound so unique and tasteful. It's not about how loud and fast you can play
speed is also an emotion, shred can be very empowering and meaningful if played at the right time in a composition... typical boomer comment who think Gilmour is the pinnacle of guitar, I love Pink Floyd but music didn't stop evolving after them, keep an open mind.
Knopfler’s playing is always amazing but let’s not forget the rest of the band. This is such a great piece of music. The band brilliantly slows down just to create a massive crescendo. My favorite live versions are from the mid 80’s when they had perfected the performance. Absolutely love what the sax player and rhythm section are doing. When I’ll get a time machine my first destination will be a Dire Straits concert at Wembley in 1985.
Great video Thom. I've been a Mark Knopfler fan since I saw him live with Dire Straits at Dingwalls in Camden back in January 1978. His solo career has been equally amazing. Not an easy player to imitate, you did a great job here 😃
Been a DS/MK fan since first hearing the "Down to the Waterline" opening in late 1978. Your "Can You Play This Riff?" series is George Thoroughly good. Thanks for this thousand note video.
Hey Thom this is really great👍😎 really one of the most beautiful renditions of Sultans - very well done!! Did you create the backing track? 2 things to note: MK always uses a volume pedal so that helps with the volume differences between the initial and last bit. ( the volume pedal is also what he uses to get the well known singing notes in Brothers in arms) The other thing is that he gets a lot of his speed by using hammer- ons and pull-offs so he does not pluck every note with his right hand. This is particularly true for what he refers to as the “twiddly bits” right at the end (famous arpeggiated triplets right at the end). Also something to keep in mind os that Mark is left handed but plays right handed so hos left hand is particularly strong with hammer-ons and pullofs with which he gets a quite percussive sound ( like the main riff of Walk of life) Anyway you have his feeling and sound very close and play it with a lot of feeling! Well done😎👍👏. With Mark its often the notes that he does not play which adds to the simplicity and beauty of his playing As you can tell I am a lifelong MK fan. He inspired me to play guitar Thanks for a great video 👍😎
One of your best videos man. It will be SO INCREDIBLE if you can do more of Mark Knofler stuff, perhaps go more deeply into his techniques, his melodies etc... if you can do a deeper diver into Mark it'll be truly truly great. good video man!!
Did I ever tell you how great musicality you have! It is beyond armony or technique. It's the secret door of music just open for some musicians ! I've enjoyed so much this video!!!
Hearing Sultans was my inspiration to switch to fingerpicking, and it was the best choice of my life as a guitarist. This feeling when I finally nailed both solos and later won a high school talent by playing them years ago - priceless! So many things and nuances to talk about in this solo! And you have to listen to the Alchemy version. To me, it's the best one.
Just stumbled on your channel & this video .. Sultans was ground breaking in so much it totally epitomised the out of phase Fender Stratocaster sound with Marks technique .. we came from the same city .. & i had success in America a No 1 in the Billboard 100 at the same time so its particularly poignant.. Sting also from Newcastle at the same time with Roxette..
Superbly inciteful video. All the time you hear that MK can't be done because his style is "too difficult / too unique" etc, but it's great to see a video showing how he does it and how we can have a stab at it, because he does have a truly mesmerising sound 👍👌
I love his melodic playing , it’s hypnotic , practicing his style this morning, he’s so fast but not shreddy fast , just melodic fluidity, how’s Ireland these days ?
Had to check a few versions.. Yet the Alchemy remains the top Frankly I really don't like how ds uses the sax. Those counterparts played by keys is just perfect for me, no interference in the build up Fading to background when it ought to
Your videos are incredible not because you are an unbelievable guitar player (which you are), but because you are so incredibly humble and give so much respect to the artists you are covering. To a neophyte player like myself, you sound nearly identical, but I just love to share your awe of these musical gods. You have an incredible way about you. So fun to watch these videos even though I'll never try to play them.
Hats off to you! I've been playing the riff finger-style for years, but have never been able to do so with a pick. You've really captured the feel and the vibe. Even with a pick ; ) Awesome stuff!
As always Love your Content. No doubt I always get to know more in details about the particular Music played by various different professionals. And thats why I love and respect you better sir
It's been a year since this video... maybe do this one again with the studio version for comparison? Please. I just found your channel and subbed after only two and one-half videos. Great lessons and easy to follow. Excellent teaching by you with great selections, thanks!
Great lesson , I finally get the good notes ! Maybe one advice for Knopfler and other finger picking fans: keep tour thumb straight instead of bending it you will be more accurate in speed and precision ! The angle of your whistle have to be more important in ordre to pick strings correctly. Thanks for the video, keep going.
04:57 Well, there is a formula he is using the Aeolian scale which in ascending interval form consists of a key note, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step. Of course music theory is just a suggestion of what might work and why and not a law as Mark Knopfler so wisely states. But there sure are formula's.
So I'm curious what people think about the right hand. I teach guitar and I'm really thinking that the way knopfler pull🎉s this off is he uses his thumb, index,p and middle fingers, and for solos like those first two themes on the d, g, and b strings, he sets his thumb on the D string and then his index and middle on the next two strings, this enables him to play each note without repeating a finger. For the famous fast 3 note arpeggio sequence at the very end, it would seem like he'd start with index, and then use his thumb on the B string string, and the middle for the last of the four notes in the pattern, then just repeats. That way you're alternating the next in the middle on the high string and I having to repeat a finger.
That was terrific Thom! Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite guitar players. You should do some breakdown of Jazz guitarist like Pat Metheny and Lee Ritenour. Anyway, hope that you are doing well! 👍🎸😉
No. To answer that question. But you...Never Cease to Amaze me. Stay Well Groovy One. (And I LOVE the natural minor scale...very expressive--as is Mark Knopfler).

The entire solo is just amazing.
I love how Mark Knopfler has one of the most instantly recognizable sounds out there
He really does!
finger picking is rare in rock guitar... jeff beck and mark knopfler

Never heard someone play this version of Sultans of Swing so flawlessly....
The Alchemy version has lots of incredible licks to enjoy and analyze...really amazing guitarist...Great job Pilgrim.
Phrasing, tone, timing, dynamics are all incredible with Mark. One of a kind.
Definitely one of my favorite guitarists and musicians ever, such a great sound and style, especially live alchemy set
Mark Knopfler is one of my favourite guitarists!😍 I love this solo so much, hope I'd be able to play it one day. Thank you for the lesson!🙌👏👍
I am still waiting for Rick Beato to cover one of the Dire Straits songs in "what makes this song great"
I searched for this version’s breakdown everywhere on youtube, couldn’t find any. And there it is now from the youtube’s finest guitar instructor
Thank you so much for highliting the great Mark Knopfler, one of my guitar heroes. Been listening to him my whole life.
Mark Knpofler's live version of Sultans of Swing...One of the greatest moments in guitar history!!!! Great job!
My favourite guitar player in My favourite guitar teacher's channel!
Only George can play this riff. Because he knows all the chords.
that would be "Guitar George" if I recall accurately...
George plays...strictly rhythm

Mark and Gilmore are the perfect examples of melody and dinamic over meaningless shredding.
