    Hi, Rick! I am a university harmony professor here in extreme south of Brasil. Although I love the content of many of your videos and have a huge respect for your musical knowledge, this time I would like to point something inaccurate here to promote some healthy discussion. Your improvisation is right to the point as well as the Ionian voice you have shown, but I'm not convinced by the musical examples. To me they're just C major tonal harmony over a tonic pedal and in some points including even an authentic perfect cadence (I notice that in your compositon too). Even when the actual sounds are the same as the Ionian ones, the context aren't. Indeed Bach was ahead of his time in using that chord, but the dominant chord over a tonic pedal is a wide used resource in traditional european tonal music. Mozart, for example, used it a lot too and I know that you know it. I would like to suggest as a good example of great Ionian mode harmony the little vamp that occurs in "Los Endos" by Genesis just before they get into the Squonk theme. It's one of the best epic Ionian I've ever found in my researches. In addition to it many pop songs are constructed with an Ionian vamp generally of 2 to 4 chords, including "The Same Chords as Always" as an ex pupil of mine used to call - "I V vi IV" and his minor counterpart "i bVI III bVII". I hope this comment can add to the topic. All the best, Rick! Cheers!

    • @toonnoppen
      @toonnoppen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I absolutely love Rick's video's too, but he sort of has his own interpretation of the modes. 1) He is actually (almost) never talking about the modes as they were used in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance but in a more modern context of filmmusic and/or jazz and/or more guitar oriented music 2) He (almost) always seems to approach the modes from this standpoint: Take a pedal tone to secure to "modal centre" and then play with the half steps. So I'm pretty sure that, if he would explain e.g. the dorian mode, he will take something with a pedal tone and then superimpose chords that make use of II/III and VI/VII. It's in that specific interpretation you should view his choice of examples (but I don't entirely agree with this specific interpretation neither...)

    • @guilhermetavares1975
      @guilhermetavares1975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@toonnoppen Thinking a little more about the examples he shows in this video I realized that the beginning of Aaron Copland's "Fanfare For The Common Man" is indeed a good one, really modal. And yes, the bass pedal tone is only one way to guarantee the modal sound. And I remembered that some time ago Rick made a video ("The Four Chords That Killed POP Music!") about that same 4 chords I mentioned in the comment above, although he didn't mention the modal aspect of the vamps (and no pedal point there!).

    • @toonnoppen
      @toonnoppen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@guilhermetavares1975 I agree with your comment and your examples. I also agree that Copland is a good modal example. The Raiders March from Indiana Jones (and some of the other examples, like the Bach one) however is indeed a bad example as it is obviously and clearly tonal with a clear Tonic-Subdominant-Dominant-Tonic structure (albeit over a pedal tone).

"how did he even come up with the idea for a composition this beautiful, the voicing, the changes etc." I always imagine a small porthole in Heaven opening up and God reaching down to Bach and saying.... Also another incredible strength of Ionian (and its relative minor Aeolian) is that they are the only 2 modes in which the 1, 4, and 5 chords have identical structure, in Ionian the 1, 4, and 5 chords are all Major, and in Aeolian the 1, 4, and 5 chords are all minor. The other 5 modes don't do that. You always write such great music examples Rick!

    Your original piece sounded great, Rick. If I can remember all the way back to my music school teachers in the late '70s, I think they called these soundscapes "polytonal," explaining that in essense you've got two chords played simultaneously, for example C and F. I like your take on it though as it seems to relate more to movement among the mode steps rather than statically of this chord plus that chord. I've learned so much from the video on your channel and laughed my ass too, on occasion, especially from the reparte' between the three of you when you have Rhett and Dave on. Thank you!

This is why, as a composer, I rarely use a minor key, because a major key handled right (like this) can provoke such feelings of longing and sweet sadness, pure poignancy. Rick - I love your composition (!), which - - I hope you don't mind - - I have added to my playlist, with the title "Composition in Ionian Mode." It has brightened my Thanksgiving Day. Would love to hear more of your compositions, in any style or mode, and hope you might include them in future videos, as you did in this one.

    Hi Rick. In the case of the Indiana Jones theme, Williams didn't go a half step up. He was actually using the Neapolitan chord.

      Bass moves up a 1/2 step. The function was unimportant to the topic.

    That's interesting how you note the difference between 'Major' and 'Ionian', even though 'Major' is our 'default' mode :)

    I saw you had a picture of Kurt Masur. Great man. Thanks for the Ionian lesson. Very cool.

    The Ionian Mode sounds like Morning to me.I believe if the angels are playing a song every time the sun rises,they would definitely play in Ionian Mode,unlike the Lydian melodies they must play to each other.It's so open and majestic,but unlike the "Dreamy" Lydian,it is "Awakening".Lydian is like the sky and the clouds,and Ionian is like the morning sun and it's lukewarm light.That's how I feel their respective brightnesses.
