Great close ups in focus and will be very helpful in repairing the toy tractor book I got secondhand for my child. Thanks mate!
Watched a few other videos for reference and others say that extra plastic is the governor. Without it, the release of energy from the spring happens in one second. Governor rocks back and forth on the gears and extends the transfer, hence allowing the toy to work longer.
    Cheers!

I think that that plastic piece you removed called governor and its puprose is to limit the spring from very quick discharge.

the extra plastic is the escapement, used to moderate the release of the mainspring

I think this is video I was looking for (13th Jan 2018) - Small Wind Up Motor Disassembly th-cam.com/video/ak7eNPhtAqA/w-d-xo.html I have no doubt I have done others too.

The plastic piece is a simplistic clockwork escapement

Apart from the metal axle it is all plastic pieces?

@@GrandadIsAnOldMan What Scott Waller is saying is that the plastic piece you were not sure about is the escapement, it prevents the main spring to discharge all it's energy too fast, like in a clockwork. A real escapement is much more sophisticated though. Nice video, greetings from Berlin :)

@@maxouterspace yep, spot on 👍👍 In fact in this application I believe that part is called the "pallet".

thanks for the video - would you (or anyone else) know where I can buy the wind up mechanism for use in some projects I have - I am trying to make something that doesn't use batteries - thanks

I have no doubt that you can buy them online from places like ebay, aliexpress, amazon. Probably have to buy several in a bundle. Search for something like "clockwork wind up motor". I just did a quick search on ebay and spotted some.

I've come across this video while googling around for exactly the same thing. I can only seem to find them if I buy in stupid quantities so let me know if you find anything :)

@johnd6487 I think you will find it very difficult to buy them individually simply because the shipping charges would be significantly more than the item costs. They can absorb the shipping cost by selling them in bulk. Your cheapest option for small numbers may be to buy toys that contain them and throw the rest of the toy away.

@GrandadIsAnOldMan to be honest, I had already considered that. I have a few cheap toy batches in my amazon wishlist as a last resort option.

nice explanation on the wind up bit but what i have noticed is that the little gear which is on the axle has a crack in it,you might want to have another look at it.im sure i saw a little crack or split in that little gear.

Yes, I think you are right, I think we can see it around 05:33 but I don't think I will worry about it. The rest of the motor will still be useful for spare parts. I just had a look in the box and I can see splits in all 4 of the motors. The box has a date 2012 so not entirely surprising. Those nylon gears do deteriorate with age. You probably remember that is a regular topic when I am fixing old toys. 👍👍

Any idea how to make one of these windup Toys electric?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  ปีที่แล้ว

It depends very much on how much modification you want to make. Ideally you would want to keep the existing gearbox assembly as the components are what make the toy move in the way it does. Your first problem will be weight, the second problem will be balance. The 3 little fellas shown at the start of the video would be a real problem. You could possibly get a small motor like used in the 5gm RC servos to fit where the existing flat spring is located, maybe sticking out the side of the case a bit, then you need to think about a battery. A small LiPo would probably do the job. But, the weight of the motor and the battery would upset the balance and these toys are cleverly designed, using the weight distribution as part of the dynamics to make it work, so if you unbalance them, they simply don't work. If you are talking about small wind up toys in general, like maybe a small car or train, then the weight and balance is not so important.
