Granny (Daisy) is Jed’s mother-in-law. He was married to her daughter, Rose Ellen, and Ellie is their daughter. Granny came to live with Jed to help care for Ellie after Rose died and stayed on as a member of the household. Pearl Bodine is Jethro’s mother and Jed’s cousin. The “Cousin Pearl”thing has caused some debate on why Jethro calls Jed “Uncle Jed” and Ellie refers to Pearl as her aunt. One side thinks it implies the marrying of relatives, and the other insists that it’s a country thing-an upgraded honorary aunt/uncle title given to a relative that you have a close bond with, even though that’s not your genetic relationship. I’m firmly in the latter camp because my much younger third cousin (who doesn’t know his father and so I filled sort of a big brother role in his absence) has always addressed me as uncle. As for Pearl being in the know, she’s a notorious snoop and busybody. The question of her finances is one I don’t have an answer for. Jed has millions of dollars and Pearl never seemed interested in it. Only the potential for fame and glamour out in Beverly Hills.
