I absolutely bloody LOVE these two, in my eyes, they cannot do a thing wrong, well done Torvill and Dean for giving us YEARS of pleasure watching you dance on ice, thank you xxx
This was the first performance I ever watched of theirs when I was 10 years old...they blew me away back then and they're still phenomenal to this day.
No one can ever replace Torvill and Dean or the gift they brought to the sport. They are by far the best Ice Dancers and won the Gold in the hearts of the people!
I remember this. They was clearly robbed of the gold. I don't care what anyone says, Torvill and Dean will go down in history as the greatest ever. No one can come close to them.
From a non-Brit with no bias, these two clearly won. It was embarrassing to see them not in the gold medal spot on the podium (which is the only place they could ever belong); it was wrong on so many levels. Shame on this sport.
@@rolandgreen7484 You act like they snuck out on the rink illegally and danced. They were legal and they should have won. Blame whomever you want, but NOT Torvill and Dean.
When I look at this masterpiece of elegance, class, technical perfection and originality of the choreography and then I remember that at the end Grihuk and Platov won on a purely acrobatic choreography and nothing more, and also dressed as two yobs from the street I still feel bad. One of the saddest and most shameful pages of Olympic history. Besides the beautiful rising stars Gordeeva Grinkov had to be them Torvill and Dean. The "History" of figure skating.
Cj M Brainwashed?... A RUSSIAN calling other nationalities brainwashed?? Wow... It's almost impressive how well the Kremlin do at keeping their citizens in the dark... At least the sporting bodies have seen sense and banned you from all international competition thanks to your state-sponsored cheating.
They are the best ever on ice. They were robbed by the judges, but even today no other couple on ice can best their refinement, their grace and ease, their inventivness, their skill and their irony, their oneness wilth each other and with the music.
I can remember watching this live, and the two performances that beat them were so average that it made the Bronze even more insulting. They were robbed.
They were robbed. Over twenty years ago and I'm still pissed about this. But the looks of their faces at the end of the routine, especially Dean's...hope he felt it was worth it.
I agree avancular300. The only reason for Torvil & Dean not to have won the compeition was the last trick that they performed, the back flip, was a change in rules after they performed and won the British competition, prior to the Olympic Competition. It is not the first time that Torvil and Dean had used the move in compeition, but the judges changed the rules without informing Torvil & Dean. Still will be the greatest ice dancers of all time in my eyes!!
Spectacular! Dashing complexity and so smooth, like waterlillies in turbulent waters, yet keeping their layered forms with an up-tempo grace. Rythmic, intricate, and stylish choreography and performance. This is what makes beat faster the heart of a public tired of mediocracy and tedium. Torvill and Dean make/are magic, and such excellence should inspire pop culture to a higher aesthetic, even within public regard. Elegance isn't dead as long as creativity and execution reach for grandeur.
What amazes me is that the winning pair not only flouted the rules - but he FELL OVER!!! How in the name of bloody hell do you fall over and win gold? Anything else you could maybe justify, but not that. And it stank for the other Russian couple too, they were "fixed out."
@Doug Metris You're quite right, I misremembered - I was only a kid at the time. He definitely fell in one performance though, right at the start - not even doing anything, fell off his forward left outside edge. It may have been the World's where T&D didn't compete. And they still won...
Phew! I'm glad my memory didn't fail me completely! You obviously know a great deal more about this than me, and I too don't think their programme was anything like the standard of the 1st Russian pair - numerous illegalities (very blatant ones) a messy step sequence and "flash" making up for technique. I wonder whether, as T&D won the European Championships through the strange voting system, the judges HAD to make G&P "win" all the other events that year. It looks to me as if the 1st Russian pair were supposed to win the Europeans but, as G&P were bumped up through the same odd voting pattern, it was then decided they had to win all round that year. I can see no other way that you can fall and even get in the medals, let alone win. Ice dance is THE one format that doesn't allow falls; pairs and singles will be penalised but it's an absolute no-no in dance. And, to my limited knowledge, is very rare - I can only think of about two other world-level championships where there have been falls. And even I can go forward on an outside edge without falling over...what a technical, complicated manoeuvre! Apologists can bang on about the details for ever, but multiple illegalities and falls are not gold-medal material. Except in the whack world of ice skating.
It was orchestrated especially for this routine using a British Big Band if memory serves. Dean had a hand in the arrangement, wanting it to be synchronized to their skating.
The way I remember it, they didn't win the gold because the judges thought that Christopher Dean "lifted" Jayne Torvill over his head, which is apparently not allowed in ice dancing, to which Christopher Dean responded, "I didn't lift her...technically, she jumped." That's how I remember it, anyway. They were perfect, in my opinion.
I don't give a damn what the judges thought, my friends, other patrons of the bar and myself watched this amazing performance and believed they were cheated out of that gold medal! Looking at the marks of other skaters who came back after so many years, think the judges were biased against the "pros". Actually biased, no eye for talent and more than a cup full of stupidity is more like it! At least WE know who the true winners are!
This program should have won the Free Dance portion of the competition. After ice dancing took a rather bizzare direction in the late '80s (think Duschenay et al.) the ISU mandated that for this Olympics it must return to its roots in ballroom dancing. The music and choreography should be more akin to that of the ballroom floor. That is EXACTLY what T&D did with this program and then skated it to perfection! Perhaps the judges did not get the "memo"! Gee, another example of poor judging, go figure! (pardon the pun!)
Actually, in the World Team championship of 1994, T & D performed this very routine in as part of the technical dance - and the commentator said it was full of difficult dance steps. Also no, I disagree that they recycled the routine from 1983. A couple of parts, like the shuffle was a nod to their 1982 programme Mack and Mabel, but that was it. I saw Grishuk ad Platov's free dance on youtube and frankly, it was a recycled copy of T&D's rock and roll routine.
They deserved the gold medal, it was simply amazing and beautiful. They were robbed of the gold medal because of the lift, but it isn't about Chris lifting Jayne it's about the inertia but, the judges marked them down because Jayne was too high. I think that's a load or rubbish- they were way better than all of the others and should have left with the gold not bronze.
It is said "Virtue and Moir" are the best that have ever been seen. If they've never quoted inspiration from "Torvill and Dean", I would be surprised. Each year couples set a benchmark in competition in ice dance. The medal didn't matter, just the same for Usain Bolt in the 100M sprint. Who cares! As an ice dancing couple, they are legendary!
Disgusting. Every one of those judges should be ashamed of themselves. The judges have taken a "sport" that was one of the most popular sports back then, to one that no one cares about any longer. No one wants to follow a fixed "sport". The judges knew months in advance that Torvill and Dean would not be permitted to win, no matter what they did on the ice in Lillehammer. Truly a reprehensible "sport".
If you lost interest in ice dance after this, I recommend that you come back to it! The CoP has actually helped it, and the technical requirements make the sport more competitive than ever, IMO. Davis/White and Virtue/Moir are trading titles, they're glorious to watch and make the other teams better. I have no doubt that if T&D were still young enough to skate competitively, they would have adapted beautifully and still be on top
I was on holiday in Toronto when this took place and watched it in a sports bar. Quite amazing to see and hear all these burly guys booing when the result came through! Everyone knows T & D were the true champs and the Russians that won are long forgotten. Although the male Russian skater was Evgeni Platov who coached our own John & Sinead Kerr to 2 European bronzes!
pure perfection they were robbed of that medal, it has so much content in it, and they were in perfect unison with each other,Judges should of gone to specsaves knob heads!!
I don't think its egotistical to want to try to go for gold again. the rules have changed so T&D gave the olympics another shot. Everyone should be allowed to compete and win no matter how many times they have already won. The question is: Are the rest of the competitors good enough. I still think T&D should have won the Olympic Gold with this performance. I love the sophistication and maturity of their dance.
You make a very good point that Grishok and Platov should NOT have won based on their rule violations, even if it were debatable who should have won. It just goes to show the judging bias.
Twenty years ago and this still makes me angry... Stitched up by the French, the Germans and the Soviets. I suppose it doesn't really matter, T&D will always *be* ice dancing, it's just a shame the sport has always been dogged by laughable 'judging'.
I wonder if the judges came to realise later what a huge mistake they've made, or whether they still maintain that robbing Torvill and Dean of their rightful golden medal was somehow right.
They were kind of defeated by their perfection in Sarajevo. I'm sure the judges were looking for them to top the Bolero performance, which is impossible. It was perfect, sensual.
Wow! I watched this in my favorite bar as well, and even the most jaded patrons there felt they were seriously robbed! 'Cup of stupidity' my ass! The judges ate a steaming heap of stupid stew.
I find it hard NOT to watch, despite the fact that T&D got cheated out of the gold... those judges' biased opinions do not tarnish the brilliance of this pair or their performance. The best ice dance pair ever, imho... the BEST. EVER.
Omg I remember being at home alone watching this & my parents were out getting groceries & missed it live & when they came home I was hysertically crying that they didn't win. LOL They were clearly robbed it was a total joke to the sport.
LDVTennis - It's clear the Shibutani's have been studying Torville & Dean's performances. Torville & Dean were the first to skate with no bare transitions - just one move blending into another move. The Shibutani's are very talented. But the fact that they're brother and sister is limiting. Torville & Dean were magic because they acted the dance and facially emoted. When dancing Bolero they looked like they were in love with each other. The Shibutani's facial expressions are flat.
@Ms0110111001101111 I think the judges thought it wasn't fair on other competitors that they were in their division because they were then considered as professionals and they had just been let back in the Olympics. Stupid judges obviously wouldn't know a professional ice dance routine if it slapped em across the face. this was a gold medal performance !!!
I agree. There is NO WAY that they (or their coaches) would have allowed that flip if it had been illegal. It was okayed by the judges.. they were there to win gold! They got screwed. Yes, the Russian pair was excellent, but this was THE crowd favorite for a reason, and apparently only the judges were obvious that night. A real shame.
I totally agree, Davis/White and Virtue/Moir are amazing (I'm Canadian, but LOVE Davis/White, too). I am so glad that ice dance is more open in competition. It was a magical moment in Vancouver with the top two teams, I was cheering like a maniac when Virtue/Moir won, but I'd still have been happy if Davis/White won.
I watched the grishuk and platov and torvill and dean again. OK, I'll say it again T & D were robbed. In terms of difficulty, sophistication, musicality.
I personally think T&D should have won. What really isn't debatable is whether Grishok and Platov should have won the gold. The separations alone in their program should have disqualified them. The judges who awarded this gold medal, as well as other voting fiascoes, killed the sport of ice skating, especially ice dancing.
I thought this program ran circles around Grishuk and Platov's. First of all if I remember correctly G&P had A LOT of separation in their dance, which went against the rules of ice dancing, and also if I remember correctly Torvill and Dean were penalized for her over the back flip at the end.
For me it's nice to win if you win deservedly. If I were in the shoes of Grishuk and Platov I would have felt ashamed as a thief picking up the gold medal. But really ashamed
They'd retired ... sort of. And yes, they got stitched up. This was the gold medal performance. The judges got silver correct. But they awarded the gold and the bronze the wrong way around.
Watching this years later, I am even more dumbfounded at the judging of this competition. Had Grishuk and Platov been British or Canadian or American, they would have been in 3rd place at best, and likely out of the medals. Had Torvill and Dean been Russian, they would have earned perfect scores again.
@starbuckhan I agree. They totally got screwed at the Olympics, which is why I rarely ever watch them anymore. I raised hell for a year after the screwjob they got from the judges.
Prior to the Olympic finals the judges stated that they wanted the participating couples to go back to the 'classic' style of ice dance - realised perfectly here by Jayne and Chris. They then awarded the gold to rock and roll type routine. How come the judges weren't penalised? There was a lot of resentment against T & D because they had turned pro and then gone back into competition. - which I'm afraid is what did for them. Just wrong.
It was after the travesty of this result that I stopped watching the Ice Dance competitions. I've just spent a poignant hour watching T&D's old routines (Paso Double, Mack and Mabel, Barnum etc) and I don't think any pair has ever beaten them for unity of footwork and creative interpretation, let alone imaginative lifts and speed of step sequences. Sorry 2010watchmenow, but look at the depth of their work. How can you say another couple out skate them? (Please don't slag me off, too old for it!)
I will always regard this as the gold medal dance performance. Simply brilliant!

The best choreography in all their performances - nothing like it - utter perfection

Had Grishuk and Platov been British or Canadian or American, they would have been in 3rd place at best, and likely out of the medals. Had Torvill and Dean been Russian, they would have earned perfect scores again.
@worthingSarah oops, late night, I meant Paso Doble...
What is the version of this piece of music they use???
@starbuckhan I agree. They totally got screwed at the Olympics, which is why I rarely ever watch them anymore. I raised hell for a year after the screwjob they got from the judges.
THEY WERE ROBBED!!!!!
Just wrong.
Pure Magic! They were ROBBED and I have not shown any interest in ice skating since.
