At the beginning of the week, rivers burst their banks in several countries in Central and Eastern Europe following heavy rainfall, causing further flooding. The number of fatalities rose to at least 15, the highest level in two decades. Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania were particularly badly affected. According to police, two more men died in the Austrian state of Lower Austria after being trapped in their homes by the water masses. A firefighter had already died during an operation at the weekend.
In Austria, the levels of rivers and reservoirs fell overnight after the rain had subsided. However, the authorities have not yet given the all-clear, as heavy rainfall is expected again in the coming hours. The situation is not expected to ease until the middle of the week.
"We are still under immense pressure, the situation is still very critical," said Lower Austria's governor, Johanna Mikl-Leitner. The most populous state in the north of the country was declared a disaster area on Sunday. According to the authorities, over 25,000 firefighters and more than 1,000 soldiers were deployed. Numerous households are without a sewer connection, in some places the drinking water supply has been interrupted and public transport has almost completely come to a standstill. Over 200 roads are closed and economic life is only running to a limited extent. Schoolchildren affected by the flooding were excused from attending school.
