Gary… the new CS40 from Outdoor Vitals??? He? Yeah? Try it maybe? 😊 Oh my gosh. Since I just got the zen bivy sleep system… Gary! You blew my mind! I could bring the sheet so my pillows don’t move around and it still makes for a more comfy sleep without adding more weight. Genius!!! Now I am SUPER happy I bought this new sleep system. So versatile!
My fav pack! I have the 40 and the 55 Finally found the perfect tent for me. The Tarptent Rainbow Li. Also have the same Sea to Summit sleeping bag. Fit so small and so light. Great video by the way!
I love this pack! I have the double rainbow li for my son and I, but he stopped wanting to go so I’m very interested in the single rainbow li. Such a good tent
Nice kit, I have a similar approach but add in some luxury items to make time at camp more enjoyable. Everyone I camp with always makes fun of the Helinox Zero chair, but then looks on with deep hatred and envy while I sit comfortably and they are in the dirt. Totally worth it, but I am kinda old. 😆 A clothing item I find to be a game changer is wind pants. 1oz, but they make a huge difference on chilly mornings or when sitting around at camp. I am a shorts guy, but just throwing on that pair of garbage-bag-pants can totally take the chill away. And, great for windy days as well, obviously.
I absolutely love my chair zero. The only reason it’s not in this pack are my backpacking sites have had tables. At places without benches/tables I always carry my chair with me.
Whoa! I've been watching your tech vids for awhile now, I had no idea you were also a backpacking nerd. I'm heading up to Great Smoky Mountains this weekend. I don't have the Kakwa, but I do love my Xmid Pro 2. Loved your video, as much as I love your MacBook vids. Your gear is dialed in! Keep it up!
Tbh i dont understand the titanium spoon hype. They are usually not very nice to eat with and usually heavier than a plastic one. I use the STS "Delta Long Handled Spoon". 12g awesomeness!
Great video dude! I’m trying to get into TH-cam myself and it’s nice to see other small creators making amazing content like this. I definitely took some notes for my next video.
@@InsertNameHereHiking-mf9yd That makes sense on how you were able to hit the ground running. We’ll keep up the good work man, I look forward to more videos
I’m also a fan of the Durston pack and Zenbivy sleep system! So sweet. Totally think you would love the Durston tents better than Zpacks, but that ship has sailed. For short trips I love my chair zero, although complete luxury item. But I don’t take two pillows … ha ha ha!
I’ve been really thinking about getting a Durston tent with how much I like the backpack. If there isn’t a table or bench I always bring my chair (bumps me out of being officially ultralight for those trips 🤣)
You can get some silicone tape from a Home Depot/Lowe’s and wrap it around your pot handles to avoid burning yourself. Makes handling the pot 10x easier and costs $8. I also seam sealed my Durston bag for extra peace of mind but still use a Nylofume pack liner. I use a Swiss knife instead of the gerber which saves a little weight and use a Thermarest Z lite sit pad or Z Packs sit pad which would save you a whopping 4 oz. That Nemo sit pad is surprisingly heavy! Just a few thoughts. Love your set up though!
I did show the one stuff sack pillow I have, I enjoyed it more when it was cooler and I still carried a puffy jacket. I’ll probably go back to using it more in the fall.
One thing that you didn't mention or I missed it is for how many days is that setup for? I use a 36L for 2 day hikes but would probably need something a little bigger for 3+ days.
I normally use a quilt but it’s too darn hot, I might try another quilt in the future but I’m digging how darn light this sea to summit sleeping bag turned out.
like he said: it's expensive to go ultralight, and you also have to do a lot of research, you can't just stop at the top 5 search results then call it done... honestly the best route is to not go with any name brand at all, but instead have something custom made for you specifically. for example, a sleeping quilt designed around your specific body size is going to save a lot of weight compared to one designed to fit "the average person" because it won't have that extra material. he could actually get the weight down even lower by switching to a bivvy or a tarp... but we all have to draw weight/comfort/cost/durability line. I've gone the other direction, the weight is going back up as I add comfort choices back in to the mix. your body will adjust to the work it has to do. think of all the shit those WWII vets had to carry across Europe. there was no such thing as ultralight materials back in those days dyneema composite fabric didn't exist yet; carbon fiber didn't exist yet; additive manufacturing didn't exist yet; even the idea of only using as much material as you need to didn't exist yet; but they were able to do it
I've been trying to dial in a good pillow system and have tried a bunch of options, but was looking at the Nemo Fillo next. I'm a side sleeper and have always had trouble getting a good night sleep (my biggest backpacking challenge, really) so I've also tried two pillows instead of one to get enough loft so I don't get a kink in my neck. How is it with two Nemos?
I have the same problem with side sleeping. The two nemos isn't perfect but its the best solution I've been able to come up with so far, its more like 1.5 as I have one of them very sparingly filled. I'm getting a hammock in soon to see if that can help me out.
Try 3 pillows and buff to contain it all haha. Works quite well with my exped pad that's comfortable for side sleepers because of the vertical baffles. Didn't like the Thermarest horizontal baffles
Pot handle is dead weight. Just use the bag from the brs stove as a protective layer in the few instances where the pot handles are a bit too hot to touch. The toaks handles are designed to cool off fast, so you can also just wait a few extra moments, before trying to pour. I have the same kit and haven't needed a dedicated handle for the pot. Great setup over all though.
Things look different when one has to carry water as well, there quite a few necessary items one needs in certain situations which aren't taken into consideration!
I’ve got a plex solo but I’m SERIOUSLY considering buying the x mid pro 1, I was surprised with how much I like the bag and am willing to give it a shot.
I’ve been mostly in the VA/MD area. And maybe I’d make a specific backpacking video, I’ve gone back and forth on it. I like not having to carry a bunch of camera gear or worry about making a video while I’m hiking.
@@InsertNameHereHiking-mf9yd I got my nu25 through zpacks. Nit the newer nu25. They sent the light with its original headband and also a much lighter and much more comfortable headband that wasn't a shock cord band. I love that setup! If you can find that headband, it will make a huge difference!
if your a pro for fitting a summer trekking kit into a 40l, what am I if I fit a winter trekking kit into a 30l which was under 8Lbs (4kg)? (Edit: my hike was around 300miles)
If you’re “ultra lite” you should have room left over in a 40L pack. Unless it’s crazy winter camping and your sleeping bag is a monster. I have that pack and all Packed up w food for 3-4 days and 2 liters of water I run about 30lbs. And it all fits perfectly. I could get a few more smaller items in there but it’s just perfect. Actually my HMG Unbound 40 is even better. Slightly heavier but with better options and comfort.
Mainly because I already had the pillow stuff sack and didn’t feel like buying another sack. Plus I drop one of the pillows during the cooler times when I can put my puffy in the pillow stuff sack.
No two pillows and a stuff sack that could be used as one but generally isn’t. I cut out a line where I said I use that for a pillow in the fall/spring because I put my puffy in there. But for the summer I just use it as a dity bag.
A wider depth of field would really have done you well when shooting this video. Only your face is ever in focus, anything you hold up is blurry. You can change your aperture size or your camera distance to fix this.

Oh my! I've watched your other channel for so long! I'm so surprised to see you are part of the hiking community. Better, your also ultralight!! 😊😊😊

I was about to say. This looks like the everyday dad 😅
Great list! So many options out there these days to choose from. Always enjoy watching different load outs.
Well thanks so much!
Interesting, some good choices. Wouldn't really work in UK where weather is very variable.
I’ve never been to the UK but it certainly looks amazing from the pictures/videos I’ve seen.
Tbh i dont understand the titanium spoon hype. They are usually not very nice to eat with and usually heavier than a plastic one. I use the STS "Delta Long Handled Spoon". 12g awesomeness!
Titanium won’t snap in your bag and is much better for washing and reusing

I have the Durston X Mid 1. I love it! Does a great job in heavy rain and amazingly easy to set up
I'm starting out with a 60 L bag from REI. I wish I could be cool and go lightweight but, its just so expensive.
If it works for you thats what matters, 60l is my perfect sweet spot for a fully functioning pack.

"Everyone in the world will use a DarnTuff Sock while hiking."
The entire world except the US: "What the hell is that brand?"
I just fit all mine in the new hyperlight elivate 22 😎🇺🇸
I just looked that up, thats a sweet looking pack. I don't know that I could fit all my stuff into 22 liters though.
Only thing I could possibly critique is drop the head light, and switch it for a RovyVon Aurora A7 G4.
I might look into that, I really don't like the head lamp.
I’m obsessed with my Kakwa 40 pack!
It's so good! I have other bags in that I'm planning on making videos about, but I don't want to give up my Kakwa.
Great video! That Durston pack looks amazing. New follower here. Crow
Thanks so much! I’m really enjoying the pack.
You should consider using a stuff sack pillow. When I shove my EE Torrid Jacket in it I get the best sleep ever.

What size ZPack Liner do you use in your 40 L Durston Pack? Thanks
Hey…. I’ve seen you elsewhere on tech….. ok. I’ll follow some you are a big mac fan too :)
Do you use a full sleeping bag or a quilt? I need to get a summer option and that 40˚ Sea to Summit sounds nice.
I normally use a quilt but it’s too darn hot, I might try another quilt in the future but I’m digging how darn light this sea to summit sleeping bag turned out.
I’ll have to check those out, I’m kind of a gear head 😅
Good god i must be doing something wrong i got a 90L Golite backpack and i can barely get everything i need in it. Im carrying about 30 pounds. 🤯

I feel your pain. Literally
I have to ask what do you bring to have 90L, I have a 25L and that will do me 5 days with a REI chair
So you take the Lord's name in vain while having a picture of the cross in your profile?
Kakwa 40l is actually 55l total. Only the main pocket is 40l.
Yep, I mention that in my specific video about the Kakwa. It’s so good 👍

That’s a good idea, I’ll work on that
So no camp cllothes, then? Or is this particular set-up for an overnighter in fair weather summer/autumn?
I’m absolutely a weekend warrior, I’ll have a spare pair of socks but that’s about it.

Ditch the sleeping bag, get a quilt. It will save you 200 ish grams.
My -1 C down quilt comes in at under 600 grams.
