My Dad sailed on Ellerman Line City Ships in the 1950's as a Cadet up to 1st Officer. So many great stories he had to tell of going all over the world. A wonderful time.

Yes, the culture in Antwerp is related to French culture. French has historically been associated with the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Antwerp was under French rule in the early 19th century during the reign of Napoleon. Some words in Antwerp slang find their origins in French.
And yes, Antwerp was and still is recognized as the diamond capital of the world.

Cool. Looks like in 1953 most of the power was still steam. The ship made in Belfast, the harbor and ocean going tugs too.

      Yes, indeed.
"By World War II, steamers still constituted 73% of world's tonnage, and similar percentage remained in early 1950s. The decline of the steamship began soon thereafter"

And there are so few today. There is one steam turbine unit I see at the dock that makes an occasional run to Hawaii that is still a regular cargo ship here and then the fleet of historic ships still in operation. I hope to see one tomorrow on the water, the Jeremiah O'Brien, one of just a few Liberty ships left. She was the one that made the trip from here, San Francisco Bay Area, to Normandy for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Maybe by next year at Fleet Week the Steam Tug Hercules will join her. @@antwerpstories

Another time of maritime transistion. Today one 400m container ship with only 20 crew equals ?
