This song speaks to their background in high school and college choirs, where singing madrigals was a must and a challenge. Add to that Avi's training as an operatic basso profundo, which garnered him an offer to join the Los Angeles Opera at the same time he was recruited into PTX...

You're hearing Avi and Scott when you hear the double line of dum-dum-dums, I think, but they're clearly a third apart, not an octave, so maybe that's not it. PTX do double-track in their later work (notably The Prayer, for instance, with Kirstie), but I really don't think it's happening here with babyTonix. However, Ed Boyer, their mixer, has talked about how he does a standard pop trick with Melodyne, of placing each voice three times just slightly apart in the mix - left, right, centre, to strengthen the fulness. And he equalizes and often adds reverb, of course. Maybe you're hearing a big reverb on Avi? I certainly think I do. His voice is deep, but it's not huge, and he's obviously foregrounded in this mix. Don't forget that Scott has a bass range, though. You can find an interview with Ed Boyer on Jacob Restituto's channel if you're interested. Ben Bram, their primary arranger, has also been interviewed a couple of times on that channel. In PTX's own words, I think this arrangement "still slaps" after all these years. This, and parts of "Come Along", are really the closest they get to showy polyphonic arrangements.

I almost choked when you stated A cappella is not serious because they use "Dum's, Dah's, um's and La's etc" . Lets see in the romantic... Mozarts Magic Flute famous aria Queen of the Night aria or Violetta's aria from La Traviata. During the Baroque... Bach and Telemann's use of "Du and Das" as repetitive words to structure the rhythm. This kind of structuring of music underpinnings and rhythms pre-dates the middle ages and you can hear it used in monophonic chant. Each culture, time and musical tradition has examples of this kind of vocal work. What amazes me about Pentatonix is how well they have been able to create a synthesis using vocal styles from the last 700 years. There is some strong musical training going into the vocal arrangements. They truly understand that Melody is just the cloths rack to hang beautiful sound from.
I have to agree the Fugue/Rondeaux at the end would make Bach proud!

Regarding the "Bum bum bum" sounds:
    1. Disclaimer: I *don't* have a trained ear, unlike you.
    2. I don't hear it at all when they come around to that section near the end.
    3. What I *think* I hear in the earlier section is Scott and Avi both doing bass "Bum bum bum" sounds. The problem is, the camera isn't showing both of them at the same time for most of it, but when it does show both of them it appears that they're singing the same syllables. Also, I'm not hearing Scott's baritone in that section.
    4. The actual audio recording is done in the studio; this is lip-synched. But PTX does their lip-synching very intelligently - they actually sing the song when making the video, so the timing is accurate, as are the singers' movements.
    5. Typically, in official recordings, Pentatonix does "cheat" on the underlying bass harmonies whenever the bass sings a solo - he'll record a second track with his harmony part and they'll layer it in. But in live performances they can't do that (too hard to get the timing exactly right) so Scott takes over the bass harmonies when Avi or Matt is soloing. Therefore Scott is capable of doing what I think he's doing in this recording.
    6. The place where I *know* they cheated in this release is in editing out some of the places where Mitch breathes, with the result that this song is known among some pentaholics as "the one where Mitch doesn't breathe." I, at least, find that uncomfortable to listen to.

    • @moragcarnie843

Actually, what he said was that he doesn't like *most* a capella groups because they're too big, which makes them more like choirs, but because of its smaller size Pentatonix can do complex harmonies and you can hear individual voices, which makes Pentatonix the exception. That doesn't sound like hating PTX to me; it sounds like an accurate description of what *we* love about Pentatonix.
