  • FA Cup Semi Final at Elland Road between Everton and Tottenham. Tottenham were the favourites for the match But Everton came out winners in the end thanks to goals from Matt Jackson, Graham Stuart and two goals from Daniel Amokachi. I was there behind the goal when Amo scored his goals. The atmosphere that day was unbelievable. Having 3 sides of the ground certainly helped!
Spurs spanked in a semi-final too.
    What a day

Little did we know, these were the final days of when the FA cup actually meant something and still had a magical & irresistible charm about it. Fans of the pitch, hugging players = the competition carried real weight, respect and prestige about it. Also, the excitement of the semi finals being played at neutral top tier grounds (Hillsbrough, Highbury, Villa Park, Old Trafford in this case Elland Road) added to that special occasion.
Such a shame that nothing lasts forever because as prestigious as the competition will always be for the older generation of fans, deep, down you know its importance has been diluted and whored out (all semis now being played at Wembley) because to win either the PL or CL is where the all important money lies. Such a shame, but great, great memories for those that are lucky enough to remember.

The media hate us. They still do, or haven’t you noticed! It goes back to Harry Catterick in the sixties. He hated the press, didn’t trust them, quite rightly, and so would tell his players they were not to talk to the press.
Imagine not being able to interview the Holy Trinity of Alan Ball, Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall, who we know were the greatest British midfield ever, even though Harvey and Kendall barely won an England cap between them because they didn’t play in London or weren’t Manchester United players! The media have never forgiven us and never will.

Prior to the match the build up by the BBC pundits had been about their perspective and preferable "dream final" as if Everton were bad for business, as they were expecting Klinsmans Spurs to win and meet Man Utd at Wembley. Well happy to rain on their parade as us Everton fans got our dream final and our dream result !.

The fans were intimidating and had most of the stadium and the players were well up for it too. Amo was right in front of me when he celebrated too and I still remember willing Gary Ablett to get that ball across with every fibre of my being, God rest his soul. On this day in 1995 we took on Tottenham in the FA cup semi final at Elland Road. I remember this game very well. I said that after 5 minutes playing that we would win this game, we started that well and played some lovely football as well. We had three sides of the ground and it was like a home game for us. Klinsman won a dubious penalty, and scored the only goal we would concede in that cup run. It should be said that the great Neville Southall was very close to saving that penalty.

Although it turned out to be of purely academic interest, that should never have been a penalty for the ‘foul’ on Teddy Sheringham. Yes, I liked Sheringham but that was a bad decision by the referee who must have been feeling sorry for Tottenham because they were getting mullered! 😂😂

This was the famous game where Everton surprised everyone and beat Tottenham to survive relegation. The game had it all. Amokachi being Evertons first Black scorer since Derek Mountfield. Neville Southalls penalty save from Sheringham. And Klinsmann so upset he almost retired but agreed at the last minute to play at Italia 90 and ended up winning the world cup and scoring the decisive penalty (albeit Baggio missed the really crucial one).
