We had a gardening and irrigation business for 30 years and I have a great tip for you! When digging holes or trenches for plants (or anything outside), use a tarp for the soil/grass/gravel that you've dug up. It keeps the surrounding area clean, you don't lose some of your soil and it is very easy to just lift the tarp to pour the soil back in the hole or trench. If there is a lot of soil, you'll have to shovel some of it off first, but the last bit can be dumped in. It saves a lot of time and effort and it is very tidy!

It's great that this couple doesn't do everything perfectly every time. Many people only show the perfect moments and then you find out later that they've been fighting for years. Real life includes the faults and the fails and the recoveries.

While I absolutely feel your pain in having to redo the hedge, I have to say how impressed I am with the push to regenerate native biodiversity in France! That warms my heart to think that something is finally being done on a large scale to fix multiple generations of messing things up. I wish the same thing was being done in Canada. You will only benefit from this and I hope you follow up with organic gardening methods as well. You will notice very quickly that your birdsong, butterflies and produce crops / flowers will come through in abundance 🌹🦋💕🐞🌿🐝🐦

Who among us amateur gardeners have not been guilty of agonizing over, and over thinking, the placement of plants, only to move them the next year? It is always a gamble, and usually requires fixing the next growing season. But I imagine that few of us agonize so charmingly.

For the climbing/rambling roses you were pruning on the wall of the chateau last episode, aim to tie the canes onto the supporting wire as horizontally as possible. Roses bear flowers the entire length of horizontally trained canes, but will only bear flowers at the very top of vertical canes (rather than the whole length). So, again, train the canes within 0 and 45 degrees from the horizontal and you'll get more flowers (this is how you get the wall of roses effect rather than the spindly-canes-with-flowers-only-at-the-ends type of look). Heirloom Roses and Paul Zimmerman have excellent videos on pruning and training climbing roses here on TH-cam.

Don't feel bad about replanting things, everybody does! I would suggest setting up a nursery area near water access to grow-on plants when you have extra or need to move something in a hurry. Then you can take your time finding just the right permanent home for them. I like to plant things in groups of odd numbers, it just looks pleasing to the eye and also a grouping has more visual impact.
As always, your videos are fun to watch and I love to see what you two are working on.

Gardening madness! I always try to think geometrically when planting shrubs and bushes... I use a triangle or a circle or an arc or a hexagon to
help me determine placement, and of course, relationship to the rest of the flora in the garden. And, if you don't like the arrangement, there's always replanting next season!
So entertaining! I truly enjoy your creative problem solving and the witty banter you add.

Interesting the Mayor asked you to move the laurel. It is a hardy disease resistant hedge that is often used as a sound barrier with no known pests. I wonder how it would affect the micro biome in the village? Anyway, I don’t think the new plants are to close. Looks like the stick measurement works!👍🏼

    • @seachange17
      @seachange17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

My understanding the Laurel isn't a native species to Normandy so does nothing to support biodiversity in that area. So much that has been planted in Europe in the last 250 years is from Asia and it doesn't support any insects, birds or wildlife. Plant native to your area, it is beneficial to the regional biodiversity.

The hedge plant spacing looks alright. Great job clearing under the trees. The leaves you rake out can be cut up and bagged with a mower and then reused as leaf mulch or placed in a compost pile...all natural-organic. Camellias are evergreen shrubs or small trees that grow up to 20 m (66 ft) tall. They thrive in acid soils rich in humus or compost like rhododendrons and azaleas. They do not grow well on chalky soil. Camellias also require a large amount of water, either from natural rainfall or from irrigation but do not like to sit in water or swampy conditions. Camellias like morning sun and some shade the rest of the day. They do not do well in heat. You have some beautiful property with a great deal of potential. Keep the videos coming and good luck.

Be sure to call the mayor every time you want to purchase any plant, any time in the future. I know from personal experience that this sort of mayor really enjoys that kind of constant and sustained polite interaction. We have a property in a smallish rural city with many groups of concerned citizens and very energetic local government that is just full of suggestions on a wide variety of topics. Our mayor sees us now and sprints in the other direction, and his secretary just starts saying OK YES OK when she sees my number on her caller ID.

@@jennyboivin6184 It's easy to think that but bare root planting for trees and shrubs if done at the right moment means they grow stronger and faster than pot grown plants. They do need a good growing hole, dig down put in some well rotted manure even some dried blood and ground bone and they really take off. In five years mine were over three feet high and with good pruning they will grow in width.

I'm a year late, but after seeing all that excellent work Phillip did to cut down the brush, all I could think about was that ivy and how it's going to be a battle to keep it from choking the camelias! The ivy really needs to be mitigated. As for the newly planted hedge, the plants were cheap, and you can remove every other one if you need to later. The way you planted them will result in a much faster hedge! Have you thought of holding a springt or autumn plant sale? The community could dig and haul whatever you want removed, while also making good contacts for future guests. Also please look into air layering or rooting plants from burying side branches; you can create so many plants for free by just leaving them in the ground to root for a year, then snipping them off to plant later.

Camellias are everywhere here in SC, USA....look up Magnolia Gardens and Plantation in Charleston where thry have the oldest camellia garden in the country. They can get pretty big but are slow growers so you can prune them as you want thry look best around the edges of a woodland. Or if you want to look at a more formal camellia garden Middleton Place Plantation also in Charleston, SC has also some of the oldest collections in a more formal setting. They are great in large planters as well. One of my favorite plants.

You should be able to replant your laurels nearer the chateau as it does not form part of the visible highway (check out when it is best to transplant them). When they mature they will provide a wonderful windbreak...so choose a location where you'd like some protection from the weather and, maybe for fun, use them to create a mini-maze for the children?

Dear Phillip - you are both doing so great! Your enthusiasm and sense of fun is contagious 😄We love reading the comments and all the good advice from your subscribers. A couple of tips from us....1. Group planting in odd numbers is a design principle worth trying. 1, 3, 5, etc. (hedge planting not included, or when planting in symmetry. For example, 2 specimens at an entry way etc.). 2. Next time when planting trees and bushes please dig a wider hole and loosen the roots of the tree a little so the roots are free to reach out into the surrounding soil. Also, create a little mound in the middle of the hole before placing the plant on top, pour in some soil around the roots and press gently to ensure there are no air pockets. Water well, then fill in the hole and water again. Some fertiliser mixed with soil in the bottom of the hole before planting deep rooting plants will get them off to a good start, otherwise watering in fertiliser is good for plants which like to spread their roots.

Glad you are saving the plants, they will be beautiful elsewhere ... Great job. Great drone views... What a difference the clearing out makes. Going to be beautiful! Bless your heart, yes that
was a big thing to have to replant the apple tree ... I like the arrangement now around the ferns. Any place will be lovely. A grouping will be perfect.

Random planting in different beds creates problems if you are going to plant an area plan it and buy all necessary plants for that one bed. Then move on to the next area. It might help. Love your humour and the banter between you both, love the Chateau happy gardening. From Tasmania

It's such a big job and I think you guys are doing great!
You're learning so much along the way by being brave enough to take on these massive tasks, I'm sure it will all pay off in the future being master gardener and master decorator/textiler
