    Just come across this almost by accident amazing what wouldn't we give to have the sounds as well! I'm thankful that we have this much so THANK YOU for uploading! And 100 years later I just happened to tune into Virtual Railfan's live coverage of this same location...

    Just think, no stokers in these locomotives. The poor Firemen are busting their backs all the way! Compare these shots w/the Curve today! Once again THANK YOU for posting!

      They were too cheap to put in mechanical stokers, but on a large engine like an I-1 Decapod, there would often be two firemen anyway, so they didn't save much!

    Really amazing stuff. Seems to me this may be some of the oldest film footage of Pennsy. Are there any experts out there who know if there's anything older?

    Great stuff. Trains were much quieter then. Kidding. That’s some horse power.

    Part of one of the shots in this footage was used in the documentary Ridin' The Rails starring Johnny Cash.

    AT 3:40, it looks like two 2-8-0's and a Mikado on the very end.

    After seeing videos of EMDs and GE diesels making their way up with almost no effort i realize how much this video has to offer..Nice to see steam engines once again.

    1:10 Did they always need 3 engines at the back of a freight train?

    This does not seem like a 1917 film. The locomotive at 1:02 has a solid cast pilot. The caboose at 1:13 is a steel caboose (Lionel had one like it), which I believe was a post WWII model.

      "The Pennsylvania's first mass-produced steel cabin car was the "N5", a type first built in 1914 (later models would be identified with a letter suffix). The basic structure of the N5 of 1914 remained essentially unchanged over the years until 1942." www.whippanyrailwaymuseum.net/exhibits/equipment/cabooses/penn-n5c-cabin-car

      My bad. I did not realize that steel cabooses were used by Pennsy so early.

    Great to see the way it was- thanks for sharing this. Does anyone know- do steam engines have any kind of dynamic braking?

    • @davidkean1487
      @davidkean1487 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope! Not all diesels were equipped with them either.

    Thanks for the video posting. Is there any interest anywhere in using digital programming processing to increase definition since it is somewhat faded? It is likely there are numerous films taken on that curve over many years, so this film may not warrant the effort.
