Curious oddities The road near the Gunpowder works is called "Nobel Court" after Alfred Nobel the inventor of dynamite. That area used to be watercress beds, hence one of the roads is 'Cress Way', the stream is still full of wild watercress. But don't eat it without cooking it first (Google to find out why). I'll guess that Brenda might be a relic from a sculptor who used to have workshop at the southern end of Belvedere Road, behind the pub/hotel, the place is now converted into flats. He had a lot of strange artworks in progress. The other sculptures with bangers out on either side of the cinema entrance are an attempt to look medieval, if you go into Canterbury you'll see a few medieval buildings with wooden carvings like that on Palace Street. It seems that was quite common in those times. The boat yard used to be a railway marshalling yard, you can see it in old aerial photos on Google Earth desktop version. Which is why there are a lot of those old pre-container, box cars for cargo. They're mostly used for storage, but someone is living in two knocked together. The barges converted into house boats are quite interesting. See if you can find a friendly owner to take you inside to show how they've done the conversion. I got taken around one once, but some of the owners are very shirty and don't like people wandering around. That old door in market place leads to someone's house and garden. It opens sometimes and you can peer in. Or just press the buzzer and pretend you're looking for someone "Is Shirley here?, Whoops sorry wrong address", that way you get to peer behind the door. The other strange door is next to the physic garden (surely you know where that is. Don't you?), round the corner from the borrowers. That just leads to someone's back garden, boring. The long public footpath which runs from QE school to School Farm through Gordon road past Gordon square is very old. It used to connect the Roman villa at the QE Schools grounds to a Roman amphitheatre and temple on the grounds of School Farm.
After my O-levels, I went wall climbing at Oare Gunpowder Works, under supervision from the teachers, of course. I also grew up in a house in Tanners Street that was built for Chart Gunpowder Mill. The little doorway? Well it's Narnia business what goes on behind that. Also, fun fact, the real Rosie and Jim boat was moored up near Morrison's. Thanks for showcasing my home town, you're not wrong about the weird bit...
Thank you for this glimpse of Faversham. My family and I lived there in the early seventies and I worked briefly at the 'Chimney Boy' hotel and the 'Three Mariners' at Oare before emigrating to Australia. My mother operated a shop in West High Street. It was such a delight to peek at what was home territory 48 years ago. Thank you from the other side of the world.
Oh wow, worlds apart but yet it really is a small world at the same time. We are sure it has changed a lot since the 70’s but glad you enjoyed a current day look at the town 😊
@@JJExtra yes I'm sure it's changed heaps. My sister and I were the Faversham carnival queen and princess in 1972/73 and attended firstly William Gibbs Grammar and then QEGS. Sadly it appears that the William Gibbs beautiful old grammar school has been converted into appartments. That is heartbreaking. Thank you again for your video
A couple of fun facts : Believe it or not but Marlon Brando was often seen in the greasy spoon cafe ( may not be there any more ? ) in Market Square . He had an apartment in Lees Court Sheldwich for a while . The other fun fact is there is a connection between ' Fav' and the three lions on England's football teams shirts . I'll let you guess that one !
The only thing weird about Faversham appears to be YOU TWO!! I was brought up at Bysing Woods 70+ years ago, before you were thought of and played a lot in the old Gunpowder Works.
The Gunpowder place is really cool. I love when you point out these hidden gems. The little house is so cute. The boats are really interesting to look around. xx
Nice video. Fun fact for you. The narrow boat moored, at morrisons is the actual rag doll. The bricked up part of gunpowder works, is home to bats. Hence gap at top.
Hi both, I live close to a distillery (Penderyn Distillery) and know about the smell, which I like. Never heard them called bangers before, which I like, lol. Love your vlogs
I used to go to Faversham a lot ..I love the smell ! Reminds me of wheatabix with hot milk x 100 ! 🙈😂I used to live in Essex close to the sugar refinery…and that had pretty much the same smell ! 💞
Nice neighbourhood you have 👍thanks for showing us 🤓 Belinda could be an old figurehead ⚓️🚢 she could have excited a sailor or two after 3 months on the sea 😚 😁
Me and my sister (two old yanks) are thinking about a two week holiday in Kent using public transport. We're considering either Faversham or Canterbury. Help us decide. Your videos are great for choosing some nice day trips. Thanks
Sounds great! We would definitely say if you are staying for 2 weeks to stay in Canterbury. There are a lot more options of places to eat, etc plus the transport links are much better. You can get buses from the bus station to all over Kent and there are 2 train stations serving different routes. Faversham would be a nice easy day trip from Canterbury on the train and is definitely worth a visit during your stay. Hope that helps 😊
I lived in Faversham til I was 18. I think I am right as I remember being told that the Gunpowder Mill blew up at one time. No specific date, but I am positive that's what I was told. In West Street years ago there was a bad smell when the old bones were bought to a certain place in West Street, not sure what they did with the bones, we used to call it the bone factory. Doesn't that little wooden door lead to the upstairs flat over what used to be Boots Chemist when I was a kid? Hmm not so sure it's Faversham that's weird, some of the people who live there are weird tho. Great vlog and although I have explored much of what you showed us I had never seen Belinda before. I do remember queueing for the Cinema with my siblings and they used to laugh at the ladies breasts. Inside the Cinema is almost as it was years ago, it has never been updated, the old lantern lights are still there.
The Great Explosion was April 1916, it was a sunday. There is a huge mass burial site for those ment that loat their lives in Love Lane cemetary, even though there wrere a few that were buried elsewhere. but named on the plaque.
I live in Faversham I hate the smell of the brewery but I walk along every day to get to school I know the people who put he loittle house borrowers in and my grandfathers boat is at the boatyard
I live in Faversham, and I love it

I love the smell of Faversham 😊 Don't forget about King Stephen and his body was supposedly dumped in Faversham Creek.
The smell really is a marmite of opinions 😂 we never knew that about King Stephen so thank you for sharing!
The Gunpowder place is really cool.
I love when you point out these hidden gems.

Likewise, thank you for saying hi to us Julie 😊
I did a 3 mile walk round the gunpowder works this morning it’s lovely when it’s sunny as it’s so shaded
My parents have just moved to faversham and I can’t wait to explore the town.
Enjoy it’s a lovely town
If me Putin would drop a thermonuclear bomb on the place, I would be eternally grateful.

😂 thanks ann! ❤️
This is where I live! I love Faversham and I walk past the brewery every now and then and I hate the smell.
The borrowers are so so cute , what’s your favourite part of Kent ??.

@@JJExtra Thank you for the reply. I was leaning toward Canterbury for all those reasons. I'm enjoying all your videos.
Have you been to the Faversham Safari? I run the event and would LOVE you to do join in and report on it. Kathy
Whenever i see gaps like where they blocked that bit up with the brick wall, all i can here in my head is “they all float down here” 🎈
😂 🎈
I live 15 (10?) minutes away from it and it is a nice town, check out Canterbury, not weird just nice
Nice town, it’s got the old quarters like Canterbury.
love the small
You can follow a path from hearty ferry to teynham and it is quite nice so I think you should do a video of the walk if u do it

@@tonilove8245 Thank you for that piece of history. I knew it had happened but didn't know the date.
The Gunpowder Works that exploded was over Uplees. A few things can be seen still over there but obviously not much left.
The smelly place in West Street was the Agrigano Fertilizer Factory, demolished in 1989.
Just moved to Faversham from USA. Are you still living here? Would like to get in touch
Jeff
Hi Jeff & welcome to the UK 🇬🇧 you can email us at jjextra26@gmail.com
Ive driven past Faversham loads of times ans have often what it was like, will have to pay a visit some time
Definitely recommend it’s a lovely little town ☺️
No camping in Faversham

I just walked past the statue in the thumbnail lmao
Haha how funny!
You two will be quite at home there. That was probably a Logistics LTD employee.
Love the smell 👍😀
Lol, like how you called Faversham weird, yet you failed to mention its equally weird school (coughs) Abbey.
Nahhh frrr
I now live in Northampton, so please stay down there , in your wonderful Faversham . Nice place, if you're into that sort of thing.
Oh dear Phil. You don't like Faversham then?
You mean you might be the weirdest people in Faversham
🤪
I live the smell that smell like horlicks
Christ!
