    This is the final video from our trip to Italy last summer. Turn on subtitles for narration.
    This channel is primarily our family journal for this project, but we've been very happy to have helpful and kind comments on our videos. For those of you who have been interested in following along, thank you for your supportive comments and suggestions.
    Best wishes for the new year!

    I love your videos. I am retired and moved from the US to Italy 11 years ago all by myself. I bought a house in northern Tuscany (Lunigiana), but it only had a small garden. I sold it after covid and I'm now renting in Liguria. Sadly, I can't afford to buy a house and property like the one you inherited. You are very blessed. Yes it's a long and hard job to restore the home and eventually work the land, but it is your family's heritage and your son will surely enjoy it when it becomes his. Your style of filmmaking makes me relaxed and happy. I enjoy listening to the birds in your videos and can almost feel the air you breathe there. I wish you and your precious family every blessing both now and in the coming new year. As I say to my friends, I didn't choose Italy, but rather, Italy called me to live there. It's that powerful a place on a spiritual level, in my opinion.

    Hello, your heritage is of unmeasurable value, I am green of jealousy, you have been there as a child, not knowing but registering values without knowing. Treasure the place maybe one day it will be a place of the most valuable refuge in the world. Thank all the same for your fantastic video.

    Been following your journey from the beginning. With lots of hard work on the land and the neglected house, you and your family are
    slowly transforming it into a wonderful home. The sweat equity that
    y'all are investing is already paying huge dividends, in my book. I applaud you for your tenacity and drive to learn new skills. May you
    be blessed abundantly in the coming year! Loved your wife's watercolor of the house! 💯 👍

    I’m not a plasterer but I watch a lot on TH-cam 🤣 I think it is best to drag the plaster away from corners rather than towards as it has nowhere to go. So e.g. the ceiling join you would start at top and swipe down. Also don’t come back to it until you have the whole section done so it has time to grab. You are making a lovely job of it 😀

    Oh, that was lovely. I watched one of the first vignettes of the summer, I think, and then this last one. What a beautiful diary. Poignant, trying so hard to finish the roof and having to leave it en medias. Throwing rubble into the shed and locking it up: is that metaphoric for something too? Love the fading away of the last images of your son first looking out over the land of his summertime, and then turning calmly forward into what lies ahead. Hope another summer in Italy is happening already now for you three!

      I find the hardest part is estimating how long it will take to finish up projects and preparing to leave, especially now that our son is coming with us. In the future I think better contingency planning for weather, and maybe better organization of our space (tools and such) could help make the start / end go more smoothly.

      35 or so, but it's very fragmented into smaller parcels due to how land used to be managed in our area. Would be nice to have things better organized, which is something we may try to do over time (sell certain parcels, purchase others, to consolidate). Costly process though.

    Just curious, are any of those large trees you’re cutting up good enough for milling? With all the thought you’ve put into everything I’m confident if they were you would have saved but have to ask. Thanks for sharing, I’m a handyman and feel inadequate by some of the things you’re tackling.

    • @SouthernItalyHomestead

      The oak species around the house is Q. cerris, which is not milled commercially in this area from what I understand. The reason is that these trees tend to have large cavities and they tend to get wind shake (fractures between growth rings). I've also read that boards will tend to warp more than other species when drying. Still, I think we may mill some for use in various projects with the understanding that most of the tree will end up as firewood. I have dried out a few pieces just to see how it looks and I think we can mill and use some. Finding the time to do so is hard though.

A couple years back we had a family trip which included a stay in Cortona, Tuscany (just north of Umbria) and also a stay in Priaino (Amalfi coast). Our place is in the cultural territory of Sannio, which covers parts of Campania, Molise, and Abruzzo. Specifically, the house is in the foothills of the Matese mountains. Water is abundant here. There are two natural springs just a short walk from our house, for example, and the surrounding towns have many such springs and waterfalls coming down from the mountains.
