I was literarily searching the same MacBooks on eBay as I watched the video! The one thing I have always missed is the "See More Results" button, which did indeed reveal intriguing, fixable machines. So thanks for that, Luke.

I recently "upgraded" from my 2009 MBP to a 2012 MBP. So long as Apple is going to make nothing but disposable devices, I'll keep using these more than a decade old ones.
And another oops as well if you dont need appletv or iworks then you are awesome but with open patcher iworks import jpeg option crashes iworks in ventura and apple tv causes a kernel panic and cpu error in ventura as well. With open patcher
I still have one of these unibodies and the anti glare screen was/is notoriously disappointing if you compare it to modern ones. The ideal vertical angle is so narrow that there's a perpetual brightness gradient top to bottom whenever using the built in screen for any color work.
I spent about $50 on my mid-2009 15” MacBook Pro with the matte display. The only issue was a bad lid sensor.its the higher end 2.8ghz model with the dedicated graphics. It’s still a pretty speedy machine TBH. Even with the core 2 duo.
I pulled out my old 2010 17IN MBP yesterday and today to work on some vector pattern drafting. Running a 13 year old computer I bought refurb the fall it came out the only noticeable thing that I found was some lag while scrolling zoomed in. And my daughter used it for 1.5 of her 3 years of virtual school, with little issues. considering my old laptop has had a couple cups of rootbeer (oops) and the only thing that doesn't work is the trackpad click. I get around that with tap to click turned on or a external mouse. My current computer is a 2019 and I really miss the matte screen, it was so much nicer than the glossy.
Also read carefully to make sure that you are not getting just a box for the item. That can be misleading until you read the listing and you find that it is just a measly box!
Around the 5:10 mark you said , and I quote "I am amazed at how well this version works"... My question is simple... why does Apple not permit this software to be installed without patches in the first place? It twists my mind that companies do this. People are still getting around it, why not make it official... with a warning, say 'This machine will be slower than expected due to its age'... I use Apple devices, but this screws me up big time.
Two (three) reasons: Planned obsolescence. Apple forces consumers to buy new machines to keep the revenue stream flowing. Two: Perceived performance. Apple doesn't want consumers to experience the OS running more slowly on legacy hardware. Three: Apple would have to adapt to support older machines (drivers) like OLCP does. I do understand with the shift to new architecture (M chips) - when Apple drops X86 support entirely with OS updates, these OLCP style patches will no longer work on Intel machines.
I bought a 2011 13 inch MacBook Air for $30 it just needed an ssd,i bought a cheap one online and it runs just fine on high Sierra.the listing said it was an 11 inch with an core 2 duo with 2gb of ram but it turned out to a core i5 with 4gb of ram.I think this was the best deal I've ever got on an apple product
I can confirm that these old MacBooks have better screens than many budget windows laptops. They lack power though but are still usable for non demanding tasks.
A 2010 model? Infamous for a kernel panic due to a faulty capacitor on the GPU circuit. I replaced the capacitor on mine with a higher capacity option and the crashes stopped entirely.
Hey by the way, where do you find your background music? I'm trying to make some videos on TikTok about repairing old Macs, and I'd like to find some great background tunes kind of like the ones you use.
I have fully upgraded MBPs from 2012 and 2013. Worth a $1000 when I bought them and they run on Intel Core i5 and i7 maxed out to 16 GB of RAM. Can still compete with them latest M2 MBPs.

6:40 A friend of mine got a Dell Latitude 3520 for her studies. I don't believe I've seen a screen with viewing angles THAT bad since 2005. And I mean that absolutely literally. Worse than 349 dollar Atom powered Samsung netbooks from that era. It's neigh unusable and it's insanity, as it's a 900 dollar laptop with really nice specs that runs very well. The screen is just a reason to avoid that machine like the plague. Not sure what Dell was thinking either.
This computer with windows 10 or chrome OS are up to date and run like an angel. Forget mac OS on old macs, at least w10 give you the ability to run any modern browser or application.
After watching Luke's video I got curious and had a look on eBay myself. So I just got exactly the same one today which I also bought on eBay, for 49€. The offer did mention a new 250 GB SSD, a new 3rd party charger (purchased by the seller and directly sent to me from Amazon) and a brand new 3rd party battery! And much to my delight it is in absolutely mint condition, it has the non-glossy display and the higher display resolution. The machine didn't come with the original Apple box but this would have been just too much to make everything perfect! 😅 I'm very pleased so far. I am going to upgrade it to 16 GB RAM (from 6 GB) and macOS 14 Ventura using OpenCore Legacy Patcher as I did with my other MBP 15 (Late 2008) and MBP 13 (2011) and my iMacs (2011 and 2015 models. I know my Mac mini's M1Silicon chip from 2020 is more powerful, but these Unibody machines are so rewarding. And just for the sake of it I will get a 2012 MBP Retina next to complete my collection of Intel Macs, although I don't really need it ... 😅
I got a 2013 Retina 15" for 50€ without an SSD and a broken battery I used an adapter for an m.2 I had lying around with 250gb and a battery for 30€ so I had a 2013 mbp for 80€ in Germany
I bought a similar MacBook Pro at a thrift store. I am about $250 paid in (brand new battery and 8Gb of RAM), but, I have a working computer that's good enough to be my daily driver. I'm running with the 🐧, but I could run MacOS if I wanted to. It's great.
Fat unibody MBPs were great. I got into Apple computers when they were the previous generation, and the upgradeability was crucial for budget macbooking :)
I got an Core2Duo Intel MBP from a friend. My MBP has 8gb of RAM. I took out the HDD and installed an SSD. I could not get macOS Lion to install on the MBP but I did get Kubuntu Linux to install on it no problem. My Core2Duo MBP has a fan issue of being really noisy (I think due to the graphics card failing?). I can browse the web, watch TH-cam videos in 480p with a little bit of lag. I am getting into this used MBP. I plan on buying a 2012 i5 Intel MBP from Ebay in the future. My main Mac is a 2019 4K retina 21.5in iMac with 8gb of RAM. I plan on buying an Apple Silicon Mac in the future when my 2019 iMac is no longer supported by Apple.

I also did that with a 2012 15" but I got hooked on upgrades and ended up making only 25 profit, but i got it a 1TB HDD Caddie, 240 SSD and 16GB of RAM, They don't make em like that anymore.
can be cheaper, got a free 13" 2011 MacBook Pro with an expanded battery, original 320GB hard drive, and 8GB of ram. Replaced the battery and hard drive back in 2022 when I got it and it's running macOS Ventura. It served as my workstation all throughout summer 2022 and my final year of high school, getting my work done, and it did have trouble at times and would lag doing some of my work, and sometimes even dying in class on those days I needed to do a heavy workload. It's on a long break, and has been since I graduated.

I had one of these at work, and I loved it.
Old style video, I needed that!!!!!!!
This kind of vids makes me subscribe to Luke.
I was literarily searching the same MacBooks on eBay as I watched the video! The one thing I have always missed is the "See More Results" button, which did indeed reveal intriguing, fixable machines. So thanks for that, Luke.
Good video Luke! I myself have a Late 2008 MacBook Pro that I'm messing around with. So far I have 8GB of OWC RAM and a 512GB SSD running El Cap. For being that old it actually runs pretty smooth. Ive used it for web browsing and simple TH-cam videos and other simple tasks and it does great. So far I'm in about 150 bucks just messing with itand it doesn't hurt my pocket it it happens to get messed up. Nothing compared to my 2015 Macbook pro or my 2017 that's spec'ed out but it does a simple job.
I'm always loved this kind of content video of yours. Keep up the good work. You're definitely my idol for this kind of stuff! Waving here from the Philippines! :)
Luke Miani is my favourite tech TH-camr. Always loved this MacBook!!
Knew Luke's last vid would drive prices down.
this model was my first nice laptop i ever got, saved up and got it back in high school. i miss that macbook and am all nostalgic now lol.
And I also just won a mid 2009 MacBook Pro without a hard drive for £16.55. We will have to see how it turns out. Great video as always luke
I recently "upgraded" from my 2009 MBP to a 2012 MBP. So long as Apple is going to make nothing but disposable devices, I'll keep using these more than a decade old ones.
At last oclp on the channel, awesome
thanks for comparing the black lvl on this one and modern mac, I am not too good in quality of image but even I got the point
Love today's Sponsor! I'll be ordering one!
I am wondering if the Cinebench kernel panic is related to the C9560 capacitor in the GPU VRAM circuit, although Cinebench doesn't utilize the GPU.
I think that is exactly the case. Oh well, at least he got to try out OCLP!
@@dosdude1it’s a pretty easy fix though if I recall(though I’m sure you know that)
And another oops as well if you dont need appletv or iworks then you are awesome but with open patcher iworks import jpeg option crashes iworks in ventura and apple tv causes a kernel panic and cpu error in ventura as well. With open patcher
LibreOffice is amazing
if you got extra time, you could perform maintenance onto it and relube the fans so that the device will last longer
Is 4GB all the RAM this supports? If not, why didn't you max it out whit RAM being so cheap?
It can get 2x1066 DDR3 DIMMS for up to 8 gb (4gb X2)
@user-si8co6fi2v that guy is my hero
„13 yr old“
The listing: „mid 2016“
Luke I love your videos!
I still have one of these unibodies and the anti glare screen was/is notoriously disappointing if you compare it to modern ones. The ideal vertical angle is so narrow that there's a perpetual brightness gradient top to bottom whenever using the built in screen for any color work.
You could have just shown the results and said you were $200 all in and I’d have been impressed. Very cool.
The title is quite misleading considering you needed to spend extra for the battery and SSD, but still a great find :D
My current computer is a 2019 and I really miss the matte screen, it was so much nicer than the glossy.
please do a tutorial on installing macos on older machines
Also read carefully to make sure that you are not getting just a box for the item. That can be misleading until you read the listing and you find that it is just a measly box!
The mid 2012 13” MacBook Pro is still SUPPORTED with OS Catalina. How cool is that…
Around the 5:10 mark you said , and I quote "I am amazed at how well this version works"...
I recently got a fully working PowerBook G4 that looks like new, for just $20 :)
How to get Ventura on this old machine???
A 2010 model? Infamous for a kernel panic due to a faulty capacitor on the GPU circuit. I replaced the capacitor on mine with a higher capacity option and the crashes stopped entirely.
I Love your videos Luke! But honestly they do feel repetitive sometimes, maybe try something new you’ll do great!
6:35 ngl they look pretty similar..
Hello! Greetings from Mexico, thanks to you, I was encouraged to buy a 15-inch macbook pro from the end of 2013, it looks like new! and it works very very well, thanks for your content, you and @dosdude1 make me lose any doubt whether or not to get an old mac , thanks for your work!!!
Not sure what Dell was thinking either.
and an SSD for "free", jeah right.. this video gives a very realistic view of the costs to get an old macbook up and running again
AWESOME!! I think this sounds like a fun hobby too :)
Old Mac books are fantastic for reading books in pdf and watching youtube and internet surfing! 👏
WOW! That model of Macbook was the first laptop I bought with my own money. Pricey? Yeah. But it lasted me through undergrad.
Done it with relatives cast offs…. We need you to do a walk thru for open core patcher now that would get some hits
I just got this machine and those ssd drives from Micro Center yesterday lol
I bought a similar MacBook Pro at a thrift store. I am about $250 paid in (brand new battery and 8Gb of RAM), but, I have a working computer that's good enough to be my daily driver. I'm running with the 🐧, but I could run MacOS if I wanted to. It's great.
Fat unibody MBPs were great. I got into Apple computers when they were the previous generation, and the upgradeability was crucial for budget macbooking :)
I would change thermal paste and give it a good internal cleanup
@user-si8co6fi2v well it's not hard to do and 20 cents of thermal paste can work wonders for performance and longevity of the Mac 👍👍👍
hey the 2006 MacBook when you went on eBay is still for sell just a heads up!
swap the dvd for a harddrive caddy and make an ssd raid 0 boot in catalina. drives will run twice as fast
How do you install Ventura?!
Is there a list of what models support ram, hdd and potentially cpu upgrades?
I wish it was as easy to upgrade the OS on an unsupported iPad as it is on the MacBooks.
Hello, I doubt you would ever respond to this comment, but do you still have the Acorn OS iPhone prototypes, and if not do you have any of the firmware dumps?
Me: Gosh, I need a new computer.
My Mom: I'll give you twenty-five bucks, and any spare parts in the garage you can find.
Me: Whoo-Hoo! 🥳
post sandy bridge release mac (2011) are probably a good place to find perfectly usable machines for less than 150 bucks. I'm a bit skeptic about using ventura with the same performance as with the original OS but firefox support was just dropped for high sierra which mean you can still use it for some time with it.
Use a brave browser
we had one of these get dropped for RECYCLING the other day. company policy meant i couldn't take it home- worked perfectly fine too!! it was absolutely tragic
My home server is on a macbook pro core2duo! Runs debian great!
Hey Luke, love your channel, I'm new to mac but already have one. I was thinking of getting my parents a cheap machine to web browsing and some youtube but I live in Canada (Toronto). I can not find anything anywhere close to that price point you have on Ebay. Could you do a quick video for your neighbour friends here in Canada with some buying tips? Tks keep up the good work!
what about a power adaptor? they're pretty expensive
I just sold a 13" A1278 2012 that I got with a broken screen for 40 bucks, I had a screen at home, replaced it, slapped an SSD, charger and sold it for 200!, Quick 100 bucks profit and I got another one out of the landfill and into a person that needs it at a fair price.
How you running Catalina? My old Mac book pro goes up to El Capitan.
Can’t find any videos of you talking about installing OpenCore which I find surprising for someone who has so many videos about old Macs. Are you just scared of getting in Apples naughty list?
incredibly clean
Luke that battery replacement you showed on eBay it’s meant for the 13” MacBook Pro. 😂
