This is a great tutorial! I just started playing the ukulele a few weeks ago and this is the first tutorial I found that broke down the strumming pattern showing notes (half, quarter, eighth), so this made so much more sense to me as a violin player. I am really loving strumming on my new Lanikai MA-C Concert Uke 💞❤️
Yes! I play concert band instruments, and I'm a teacher, and I struggled with all the ukulele videos for kids, that didn't teach how the strum patterns fit into the counting. I like that there's the actual notation shown, really helps to reinforce my other music lessons. I'm playing my daughter's Fender tenor ukulele.
Thank you, Terry! I've been playing for six months and caught on to fingerstyle a lot more naturally than strumming (I'm just not that cool). These simple patterns will be extremely helpful as I continue mastering my mahogany Kala concert uke.
Been binge watching/practicing with you for an hr. I have years passed experience with strumming chords in guitar but have forgotten most of it. Now I have a new guitalele and and having fun relearning and playing around with the bottom 4 strings as well. Keep sending out videos, Terry! I need them!
I'm a beginner with a Pono pineapple MGCP and an Ohana 350G. Still have trouble being smooth when changing chords and forget singing too. Not happening.
Thanks Terry! Got all 7 - love the island strum. Guitar player discovering the joys of baritone ukulele on my Pono MB. Have almost completed your Baritone Ukulele Boot Camp (3 more lessons) and am having a blast. I appreciate how you easily slip music theory into your videos.
Totally BEGINNER AND TONE DEAF.....I have a kamaka 6 string tenor ukulele that was given to me around 40 years ago. Since I can't play tennis any more decided to pick up a new hobby...
I'm learning on a Lohanu LU-1 concert bought from Amazon (urgh!) I want to get a better uke but don't have a bunch of money (under $500). This was good to start on but doesn't stay in tune and has a very flat tinny sound. Any suggestions for a new Uke (concert)? I started with a soprano but my fingers are short and fat and I was having trouble with managing cords.
Tenor (also have soprano) enya. I enjoyed this vid. I play several songs and several chords but timing and different strumming patterns are challenging.
Ukulele is very popular here in Asia. New beginner here. I'll subscribe Mr. Terry. I like this lesson very much. Not sure if you comment, but keep up the great work and the free stuff which goes along way.
I have the Famous FS-3 model. All wood. Top Japanese Maker of Ukuleles. Its a nice advance beginner Ukulele, but I feel its will meet my needs in the future.
I take lessons with my daughter. She fingerpicks the melody on her Luna Soprano Uke while I do the island strum on my gold tone concert Banjolele. It’s been fun learning and playing songs together.
In that 4th pattern, I think you strummed on the 1, 2, & 3 while not strumming the ands? I’m leaning on a soprano kala Uke. I was a woodwind player as a teen, aspiring drummer currently.
There are a lot of really good teachers on youtube and everyone needs to do the hardwork of spending time with each to find out which teaching style works best for you. I've gone through several now and I will revisit them all but so far your teaching style works best for me. Thanks so much!
Hi Terry, I'm a beginner with a baritone uke. I have music piano notes with uke chords but not for baritone. It is a gcea not dgbe. Can i use these notes for my baritone uke? Also can i change my strings from baritone to soprano using my baritone uke? Thnx.
How do you strum AND change chords at the same time? So far, for me, it's like that thing where you do circles on your tummy and head at the same time! And do you keep the same strum pattern going throughout the song? Help!
Loved it~! This is the first time I have seen where someone has explained different strums in detail like this. EXCELLENT JOB!!! THE BEST!! I have 2-Soprano, Concert, and Tenor - KALA, and I have 2 Concerts by Luna! I love my Luna, especially my Luna Concert Crescent Spalted Maple!
Your multichord examples make it not sound right when i practice with a single chord. Very unnerving to the ear. Makes it hard to practice. Cuz it doesnt sound the same
Please stop asking me to like, subscribe and comment throughout the whole video. I am sorry to say, that I stopped watching because of it, and will look for other teachers who don't wast my time or try to persuade me to do that.
Thanks Terry. This was very helpful. Just got my first Ukulele last week. I tried guitar 20 years ago, but failed miserably ;-). So I became a band nerd ( baritone horn) instead. Now as a Music Educator for Pre K children it would be nice to be able to accompany them with something besides a piano. So I've decided to give the strings another try.
Thanks for the video, its great for beginners. When you strum with your first finger, is it your fingernail strumming the strings or the pad of you finger? I assume it is your nail as I see you do have nails. And would it be the top of your nail or the side?
Hi! Great tutorial! I’m a violin player and just picked up a Lanikai concert uke. I have some songs I’m working on so these strumming patterns are key! Thank you!
My ukulele sounds completely different than all the tutorials I watch it could be I tune it wrong or something. I use a phone app to tune it but it makes it extremely hard to follow tutorials
Hi terry I am following your instructions on strumming but my ukelele sounds very tinnie. It isonly a cheap on can you recommend one that is deeper than the soprano and would be good for a beginner
I love to switch between C and Em when practicing my strumming. As barely a beginner - they’re easy to swap between while providing variation so you can feel out the beats of the strumming
thank you. scored 5 today. One thing I'd love to know is how to change strum pattern mid song, as the song needs it. I have 3 ukes, latest is a Pona pineapple
To answer your question lol i believe At 6:59 you played this chord progression: C, F, G7, C! 😉😉. And i practice on a soprano, but also on a concert when i feel more comfortable with what im learning. AND i just purchased the ‘Ohana CK-35CGE concert Uke! SOOO excited for it to arrive
Hi Christine, any courses you've signed up for you will be able to find in your library once you sign in to your account. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you!
Thank you for the video! Just got my first ukulele last week and this helped me feel so much more comfortable and relaxed with it. I have a Tanglewood Tiare Tenor and I'm loving it! Beautiful sound and easy for me to play!
Thank you, Terry! It’s my day 2 practicing Ukulele and your vid is extremely helpful. 5 absolutely. I’m starting with Sorenpia’s soprano and your mango sounds beautiful. I’m definitely gonna put extra effort to get that grand daddy down.
I graduated from Berklee College of Music but this is worth a Semester!! Much olbiged
Hi. Just started playing the Ukulele. Never played anything before. Thank you for making it look so easy. It makes me want to keep trying. :)

Or you can always play a tenor flight fireball even a pono so cool Aloha Geno
does the “smoothness” come overtime, i feel like im forcing every strum(it’s my second day practicing)
Smoothness does come over time. Alot of it has to do with having a relaxed wrist on your strumming hand.
I just learned my first ever strumming patterns, from you.
Thank you very much!
Really appreciate seeing the sheet music as you play, thank you

Thanks Terry! Got all 7 - love the island strum. Guitar player discovering the joys of baritone ukulele on my Pono MB. Have almost completed your Baritone Ukulele Boot Camp (3 more lessons) and am having a blast. I appreciate how you easily slip music theory into your videos.

Woo Hoo I get it! But need practice!
Nice work
I don’t know how to write out music without using notes. I think it would be: quarter eighth eighth half. Or something like this:

Your multichord examples make it not sound right when i practice with a single chord. Very unnerving to the ear. Makes it hard to practice. Cuz it doesnt sound the same
Maybe this is what my playing needed. Thank you very much!
I can do the Island Strum, but only on song "Water Come to Me Eye." The song I learned it on. When I try to play it on other music, I get stuck.
