Fantastic. Western Plain is an American Folk tune which was appropriated by Rory Gallagher. He made it his own. The Irish ownership of this continues here. Great to see it.
I completely agree with you, I was very lucky among with my 6 brothers to get to see Roy sing this song many times but not enough times, I still miss Rory Gallagher
Just passing on a message I just received from the very greats Mr Leadbelly & Rory Gallagher, they asked me to tell you that they are incredibly pleased with this version of their most favorite recorded song, as they both sang, Come a cow-cow yicky. come a cow-cow yicky, yicky yea
What do I need to know about everything that just happened here? What program was this featured on? Are these musicians in multiple bands or just The Unwanted? I'm a Rory Gallagher and Leadbelly fan and my clumsy American ass feels very lucky to have stumbled across this.
So many questions! Well there is a lot of info in the description so you could start there. The TV program is Geantraí. That's an Irish word - it translates to 'Lively Music' in English. It's an Irish TV show which promotes traditional Irish music and musicians on TG4 which is our national Irish language TV channel. The Unwanted are a collaboration of musicians who are all successful in their own right. Cathy sings backing vocals here on this video, but herself has a lovely voice. Check out 'The Bold Fenian Men' for a good example of her singing. Its on youtube. Seamie is a very accomplished musician - he plays lots of other instruments other than fiddle and has released his own music and collaborated with lots of well known musician. Rick is american but seems to be resident in Ireland as his gig listings are based here. He too plays a number of instruments but I think you'll agree that is some SERIOUS garmonica playing right there! AND i stumbled across it too, while channel hopping. I was immediately taken with the performance and afterwards I put some messages up on Irish TV forums asking if anyone knew what it was. Someone pointed me in the direction of Geantraí. I ripped it off the TG4 website and threw it up on youtube (TG4 tend to be fairly laid back about this sort of stuff and there's clearly no malice or infringement intended - I just wanted to share the awesome music and promote the Geantraí show) Anyway I am glad it found it way to you. Maybe you'll come visit us some time!
