    It caught me so fucking off guard when Kieth turned out to actually be a victim and not the antagonist. I thought going in, “It’s probably going to be some kind of twist on who the villain really is.” But then seeing how Kieth was acting and then analyzing the door being able to drift closed on its own made me think, “Oh shit, Kieth really is the villain!” And then he goes silent in the tunnel, and I immediately thought, “He’s definitely trying to coerce her in there and is going to trap her.” And the holy fuck, the twist had my head spinning. That was absolutely nuts to me going back and forth on whether I thought the marketing was fucking with me or not. That twist shocked me and actually amped up the horror big time for me. I felt like the unexpectedness of it all was definitely what did it for me with this movie

    My pet peeve of this movie is that no one reported Tess missing? She has apparently been down there for a couple of weeks. The employer warned her about the area but she never looked for her again? Friends & family back home? 'Marcus' was blowing up her phone when she 1st arrived. No one reported her missing??? Also, all she had to do was tell the cops Hey my name is Tess ... look me up I should have a missing person's report.. I hated how that played out with the cops not believing her or taking her seriously, that was stupid.

    I interpreted the strength of the deformed “mom” as mother’s adrenaline strength. I think because she was desperately trying to get to her “baby” she has that freak strength like when a mom is so fueled with adrenaline she’s able to break car windows or hold the back bumper of a car to keep it from going down, something like that. That’s just what I suspected but I do agree they should’ve explained it a little better. There’s been stories in real life of average women using every cell in their body to save a child by doing something they couldn’t normally do.

And I laughed out loud too when The Mother leaped toward the camera. That shit was funny as fuck I don't care. I also loved how it was almost a really weird fucked up Frankenstein's Monster story to where The Monster didn't know right from wrong, and just wanted to live. The only thing that didn't amount to anything that happened in the house was the random door openings and closings and Keith having nightmares. I guess the nightmares can be written off, but the doors opening and closing locked shut.
    My friend said the old man in the tunnels could pull the strings from above, which I call bull. However the house looks remodeled and no one knows he is down there, he has no surveillance of the house and I can't imagine twine string over 40 years would all be operational. I can accept that when they slept, 7ft queen came up opened Tess bedroom door, and wanted to see the new guests since the homeless man said she leaves at night. But when Tess was going down the basement and the door immediately closed behind her that made no sense.

      I think Frank built the doors to self close at some point in his horrifying serial rapist career just incase he forgot to close the door one day it would eventually close on its own preventing his victims from escaping even if he slipped up some day

    • @petegilk
      @petegilk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Keith was just having a nightmare, the door openings were the mother, and the doors closing were just the doors being unbalanced as old house foundations shift over time. There was a clip when Tess was in the basement where the basement door starts to slowly shut again, and she catches it before it does. It shows it shutting on its own. And I think it locks every time because the original owner designed it that way maybe.

      I felt the same. I was hoping it would be the woman from the flashback and it would be more of a Stockholm syndrome situation where she thinks she's in love with the old man. I think it would humanize the monster and show she is also a victim of this horrible man's treatment

    • @DoorsToHideBehind156
      @DoorsToHideBehind156 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thought is maybe the woman monster was the result of generations upon generations of incest, separate from the man. And was there the whole time living in those tunnels. The movie wasn't bad. However, I had some exorbitantly high expectations, which were not met. The movie was marketed ingenuously. Admittedly, the movie wasn't bad (the soundtrack was AMAZING). However, as you mentioned, at the root of it - the story is pretty basic. The marketing for this movie had me under the assumption that we were in store for something much more involved/interesting. Instead , we got some half assed villain background story and a big titty inbred monster running around in a basement, with only a couple horror scenes. Perhaps I am being a narcissist. 6/10 rating from me.

I honestly thought it was going to be way crazier and wackier, but it wasn’t elaborate as I expected it to be yet it was completely effective. I liked that as silly as the bottle and breast feeding scene should’ve been, i bought in to the serious terror of it because of the acting, especially Tess. If her line, “She just wants you to be her baby” and her sucking the bottle was in a real B-movie, it would be just dumb, but her acting convinced me that you should be terrified.

    My biggest criticism of this movie is why the Tess character was so concerned about Keith & AJ when her life is literally in danger? Why didn’t she just leave and call the cops? She only spent 1 night with Keith & only a few minutes with AJ before she escaped. She has no emotional connection with either of these characters so why does she keep risking her life to save them? She took a picture of Keith’s ID so she could probably find his family and let them know what happened to him. Also where are the other children? Did Frank just kill them all and left “The mother” alive for some reason? We saw a whole scene where he is shopping for baby supplies so it didn’t seem like he was planning on killing them. Also I was a little confused about the timeline. If the mother is only 40 years old shouldn’t her mother be alive and living in the house? Or does Frank kill the women once they have a baby? And how long has this inbreeding been going on that she is so deformed? And why does the mother go out at night? Is she looking for food or a human to kidnap to make them her “baby” and you’re telling me that she hasn’t found anyone in 40 years? And if AJ is so self serving to the point that he would throw a woman off of a building that literally came back to save him, why wouldn’t he just run away when it looked like both Tess and the mother were dead? I just had so many unanswered questions. I think the plot could’ve been flushed out more.

      how well did telling the cops work before? Not so well! Maybe that's going through her head, or maybe she thought there wasn't time to somehow make her way to the police without a phone or car or any means of getting out of that busted neighbourhood. The rest of your questions are fine, but I didn't think necessary to answer. You can imagine anything you want, but a lot of those details are not important to the plot as-is.

      The "past" scene of the old guy took place in the 80s (the music told that much). So let's assume 40 years until now. But remember, that's when we first saw him (and things were already underway). Presumably, this had been going on for years longer.
      So let's say 45 years.
      Honestly, that could be 3 generations of inbreeding if he started in 1970-1975. And looking at the cages and crap down there, I don't think the old guy (Frank? Don't remember the names offhand, and too lazy to look at imdb) really cared much about taking care of people.

My guess maybe the woman monster was the result of generations upon generations of incest, and was there the whole time, and the guy was r*ping the women holding them captive to give her babies, but the babies never survived very long because she wasn't able to care for them very well. And the woman probably died or were killed by the guy after.

    There were lots of plot holes with the movie actually. None of them bothered me though because I loved the movie so much I was like it just doesn’t matter lol.
    Here are some of them:
    •It’s an Airbnb being rented out. This creature is know to be let out on the loose constantly in the nights, so what about all the other people that have rented the property out in the past? When Justin Long’a character calls his property manager she even says the maids come and clean the house after each tenant leaves (suggesting there have been tenants). Why would the creature not mess with the other tenants?
    •What happened to all the other babies he had? We get the idea of how the creature was created, but what about all the people that were raped and tortured to get to that point. Her siblings and such. I know they’re old and shit but he had like over 40 tapes, and he was inbreeding with a ton of them to get to the creature. That’s a lot of bodies.
    •Why did that door keep magically closing? The door to the basement? There was times where the door was opened for a prolonged period of time then close at convenient times with a supernatural implication. Like when Keith goes down into the basement, the female protagonist is just standing there watching and the door isn’t closing at all, then when she goes in the door magically starts closing. Couldn’t be the creature doing it. I know why they did this (to throw you off the plot of it being complete grounded in reality) but it was never explained what was happening with the door.
    Also I disagree with some of your points. The characters were dumbed down in certain situations. Like when the female protagonist escapes to find the police and she’s explaining to them what happening, she’s comes off like a crazy crack head (which she even stated) but not once did she tell the police her phone and belongings were in the house because it was an Airbnb she rented. The director purposely dumbed her down to make her appear crazy to the police, and refrained from any intellectual attempts an actual person would say in trying to get help. The first thing I’d tell the police is that I rented the house through Airbnb.

      Yes all valid points. I also wondered about the back story where all the other women and babies went? I'm assuming the man killed the women, and with the babies none of them survived very long. They're living in dark tunnels with not enough adequate food and probably died of hypothermia, Detroit gets cold as fuck in winter. As far as the air bnb I think the other people were never hunted because they never discovered the underground tunnels. The monster kept out of sight when there were other people renting the house and probably only went out at night when there was nobody in the house, and probably only picked off other homeless people or prostitutes who would never be noticed missing or have anyone look for them.

    Plot holes:
    Why is she so strong
    Why didnt she just go in the house when it was night time and take them. Seems she was already there.
    Why didnt anyone report her missing.
    Why did the homeless guy run and scream at her instead of just talking normal. Or tell her through the front door he just left. Lol
    Most of the plot holes are mainly just stupid decisions. Like no one on earth would make the decisions they did.
    How did no one notice the hole downstairs when they were selling the house to rent. There are so many things that make zero sense in this movie.
    Your justifications that fix the plot holes are so weak. Just like the writing of this movie.
