Just thought I'd post the results of our experiment with this. We moved into a new house during lockdown and wanted to frost some windows for privacy. It worked really well for a few months, no smell, all good, Then we had some mould growing on the frames around the windows so had to wash it all off. So good for a few months but not a long term solution.

Cool idea!! I might do this with the kitchen windows or maybe just to draw snowflakes or so. Although I was not surprised by the outcome, as I used to "glue" my wine labels to glass bottles with just common half fat milk. When the bottles are washed in water, the labels come off easily leaving clean bottles for the next batch.

They have a spray paint clear coat that you can get specifically for frosting glass. It works beautifully, and I got a can of it from Amazon for something like $6. I also have this static-stick flexible plastic window treatment that you can stick to your windows, and it makes it look like stained glass. Makes the light coming in something really beautiful. It was, however, $25~ at the local hardware store for enough to cover 140cm x 80cm or so. I frosted most of my windows and put the "stained glass" look in the center one, and MAAN, it's incredible. The light coming through is smooth and airy, and because the sun sets on that side of the house, in the evenings, I have this beautiful array of colors (green, blue, yellow, orange and red) filling my shop.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@colleta2400 you're entitled to your own opinion, even if it's wrong. Here's a snippet from "Plain and pleasant talk about fruits, flowers and farming" Beecher, Henry Ward from 1859, on the topic of milk paint:
"^A paint has been used on the Continent with success, made from milk and lime, that dries quicker than oil paint, and has no smell. It is made in the following manner : Take fresh curds and bruise the lumps on a grinding-stone, or in an earthen pan, or mortar, with a spatula or strong spoon. Then put them into a pot with an equal quantity of lime, well slacked with water, to make it just thick enough to be kneaded. Stir this mixture without adding more water, and a white-colored fluid will soon be obtained, which will serve as a paint."
There are other recipes which use skim milk, for instance, but the common denominator in all of the recipes is that they all contain a milk product, used for its milk protein content.
If you find milk paint which doesn't have milk in it, it simply is not milk paint.

You do not need the high % fat, just leave it out in the tray for a few hours and some of the water will evaporate and you will get same results.

I actually was wondering why you didn`t choose vinyl at the beginning considering the costs it's pretty clear.
If you want it in a bathroom on here is a tip:
Don't apply the vinyl dry on windows.
To apply it to windows I do it with a mix of water and a tiny bit detergent in a spray bottle.
Spray it on the cleaned window and on the sticky part of the vinyl and you can lay it on the window completely. If there are any folds you can lift it, respray and repeat until it lays perfect. The only thing you have to do then push out the water to the sides. To cut overhang wait till it's completely dry otherwise the vinyl could still move.
I hope someone finds this useful. :)

Bubble wrap and soapy water does give some privacy as well

Curious if you could brush on a clear coat after the milk dried. My thought is on an exterior window, as they age, you could get condensation inside on a really cold day outside.

It would need to be an oil based clear since a water based one might take off the milk. On the other hand you may want to try mixing in a little buttermilk into a water based clear and see if that works?

@@achappel The most permanent solution: Take your dremel and a diamond bit and be creative, tattoo your bathroom window! People will stop and stare! Fun! And it will not peel off like any clear coat.

Nice! But what would happen if the window fogs up on the inside / condensation from cold outside and warmth inside?
