This place is so beautiful . The weather , Greenery everything. I think people prefers to use cycle more than any other public transport so the road is not so clumsy .
The country has around 23 million bicycles while the country only has 17 million citizens. So yeah, we cycle a lot. The country also has the biggest bicycle lane infrastructure on the world. So cyclists can go on a road dedicated for bicycles separated from cars.

You can also call the city "Den Bosch" is that's easier to pronounce. It's a different name for the same city, but more widely used by the Dutch.
The Hague also has a 2nd name like that. The Hague is officially called "s'gravenhage" (meaning: the counts Hague).
Official it is s-Hertogenbosch and Den Haag...De Count (Graaf) isnt that important for the city...The duke (Hertog) of shertogenbosch has more value for the city.
's Hertogenbosch is more or less pronpunced 'Sertogenbòs' (emphasis on bos)

The water around the city indeed is a moat. Denbosch is one of the older moat / fortress cities in the netherlands and was one of the major places for the roman catholic faith (as opposed to the reformed found north of the rivers. The lands around the city were fully submergable in the past as a way to defend the city, giving it the name "swamp dragon". This was notably done in the war between the netherlands and span in the 80 years' war.
The Reformation took place in the 16th and 17th century. Before that period of time the Netherlands were an entirely Roman Catholic region. The Dom Church in Utrecht has been built as a catholic church. It got ravaged during the iconoclasm riots after which the calvinists took over.

My hometown of Es-borgen-tosh!!! Never heard that variation before, I like it though. Correct pronunciation: sertogenbos.
And yes, the canons were used to protect the city from invaders. The nature in front of these walls used to be a huge floodable swamp and that was ideal for defence purposes. However, in 1629 the city (under Spanish rule at the time) was invaded by the Dutch (sort of) by pumping the swamp dry. True native inhabitant still see this as an occupation by the Dutch and not as a liberation from the Spanish.
