This is very helpful, can you tell me if there is a way to update the pre-filled form? As in a student will no longer be participating? or you need to make a note for the teacher. I've done my form however I can't find how to edit it without having to pre fill all the fields again

Google forms automatically date stamp each entry into the resulting data spreadsheet....adding a comment section would be easy...just add an additional field to the original form with the "text" format

Looks like if you have the first method students can sign in for others. But if you go with the second method, does it consume a lot of time to ask student to sign in one by one?
Using the "pre-filled-link" option will reset the form each time you visit it....the resulting entry into the spreadsheet is for each time you enter it...
Can you add new students without having to retype your rows from scratch? For example, say your form is an alphabetized list of students, then a new student enters the class. I didn't see how to rearrange the existing rows so I could insert a new student's name in the proper place without retyping the whole list.

Do you have to conditionally format each day or can it be set to automatically conditionally format the green for "present" and the red for "absent" after each day's entry is submitted? Thank you!

When you adjust your google form, the linked google sheet will adjust and add new students automatically. The old dropped students old data will still be there, but you can either keep it for archive purposes, or adjust formulas to ignore the dropped student.

a QR code would be a great way to have students self report, but would end up creating an entry for each student rather than one for each day...
