- Kathryn is sharing about the first case of the US government using blockchain to fight fraud. She is sharing about how they could shut down the silk road and even indicted federal agents in the process.
Based in San Francisco, Kathryn Haun is a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice and is its first-ever coordinator for emerging financial technologies. Since 2006, she has served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, first in the Washington D.C. area and later in San Francisco, California. She has investigated and prosecuted hundreds of violations of federal criminal law in U.S. courts, with a focus on organized crime syndicates, cybercrime, the Dark Net, and fraud. In addition to her role at the Justice Department, she teaches Stanford Law School’s first-ever course on Cybercrime and Digital Currency and is frequently called on by U.S. and international policymakers for her expertise in these areas.

Great talk. Its great to see that those most involved in fighting the mis-use of this technology can see it for the potential it presents for good as well as for evil, and have the smarts to go out and help others understand it aswell.

TED and Kathryn, thank you for bringing me such a informative speech. I was very depressed by the big down day of the bitcoin's price today. The constant blame of bitcoin for help the criminals to laundering the money and other things let me wonder if I should stick to my believe on this new technology cryptos or not. Your speech answered my doubts!
Apparently system upgrade approval up the official channels is not that easily forthcoming and officials have to create general public awareness to achieve results.

So, I have always thought that true global distribution of property records will do a lot for humanity.
One thing always destroyed in war is the property titles. Also, records of individuals.
But, with a global block chain, bombing the buildings of opposing countries is more apt to destroy the records of our own country.
But, even those records should not be destroyed.
So, this is hopeful. Countries might not be able to make people disappear as easily. And, governments might not be able to confiscate on the basis of race, color, and creed as easily.

It is a shame she veered to the blockchain angle instead of silk road, crime, and corruption... She should have given a talk on her expertise which does not seem to include "cryptographic wizardry". Also, she does not seem objective about law enforcement. In criminology, "opportunity theory" is fairly well respected so it is reasonable to think that a class of people who know how to cover their tracks and have the persuasive powers that come with authority (as she points out) could be more inclined to commit a crime than others. (I am assuming when she says that 99.99% of them are hero's that she takes it for granted that non-FBI agents are more likely to be criminals)

She has no clue what a blockchain is. Not once did she use the term Proof of Work.

A stupid argument. Now, I did get the vibe that she did not know what she was talking about, but I could be wrong. I think it is possible to manipulate the blockchain if you have enough computing power. It is possible the Silk Road has a supercomputer that they used to pin the whole thing on these federal officers.
It would be nice if theory always matched what happened in practice. While in theory it may be "impossible", in practice it is likely just very difficult. I have taken classes in advanced cryptography and there are ALWAYS exploits and hacks.

There are exploits like MIM attacks but the encryption itself was not cracked. Everything online is based on the same encryption. Not yet cracked. NSA spied on various contractors and people because they proposed a standard encryption that had loopholes.
Regarding how they got the pirate: basically he logged in on Google and Facebook with the same IP as the webserver and those companies handed the details to FBI. So by mistake.
You cannot ever say that it is not yet cracked for certain. There are numerous ways of doing "partial" cracks with enough computing power. If you take an advanced cryptography class you can learn all about them. Part of computer "security" is presenting the facade that it is mathematically "impossible" to crack. In practice, the only thing that is mathematically impossible is having an actual system that is mathematically impossible to crack. Many things that were claimed to be mathematically impossible to crack have been cracked, including MD5, SHA, and DES, just to name a few. And, of course, there are always social engineering based attacks. You can say it is "impossible" because it is distributed, but it is not impossible, just very difficult.
