This was a tribute to MJ! ♥️ PLEASE react to Lay's solo work! He is the only Chinese member of EXO....MV's "LIT", "Honey" and "Lay U Down" The later two are all in English. LIT is a masterpiece and his Krumping is excellent!!! He is referred to as the Asian Chris Brown for his dancing!!!!

"Let's Shut Up and Dance" is a collaboration of 3 artists or groups from all different parts of the world and features dancers from all over the world, so this song was meant to celebrate what makes music and dance such a universal art.
If you know Jason Derulo's background, it's not surprising that he is a great dancer. He was a dancer even before he was a singer. If you have ever watched the American competition show called "So You Think You Can Dance?" He was a guest judge on the show for one or two seasons and he talked about his background in dance. He actually has a background in tap dance, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, etc.
Yes, this whole song and choreography is supposed to be a tribute to Michael Jackson. Jason is dressed with the white jacket and hat like Michael in "Smooth Criminal" Lay's red outfit is supposed to remind you of MJ's"Thriller" outfit, and of course, the sequin jacket, and I think the black outfits NCT-127 wear is supposed to remind us of "Bad," etc. etc. Most of their outfits and dance moves were supposed to be emulating MJ.
This MV was filmed in different locations all over the world. As you know, Lay is the Chinese member of EXO, so his part wasn't even filmed at the same time or location as Jason and NCT-127. Lay couldn't technically work with NCT-127 at this time because they are a Korean group under a Korean company, even though they are both from SM Entertainment. It's all about appearances. Because this was during the height of the conflict between the Chinese and Korean government, Lay was restricted from being associated with anything to do with a Korean company. The Chinese government will look the other way at some things because it's a song by an American artist and it's all in English, but to be seen actually working alongside NCT-127 would probably have pushed it too far.
As an SM group and SM artists, as you also are starting to discover, NCT-127 are another group of amazing vocalists, rappers and dancers. Just like all of SM's groups. :D And it's 127's job to represent Seoul around the world, which is why SM used them in this collaboration. This was during the time when SM was beginning to really push to promote NCT-127 in the U.S. and 127 had a lot of activities and promotions in the U.S.
Lay is one of EXO's main dancers and he is considered one of the BEST dancers in China. He is one of the most famous celebrities in China right now, so everyone wants to work with him. He has even been given the title as the nation's producer. He is one of the most sought after celebrities in China, who is quickly become recognized for also being one of the most talented. So even American artists such as Jason Derulo, Far East Movement, Will.i.am and Steve Aoki are clamoring to work with him. He even has two solo self-produced all English albums. MJ has had a big influence on Lay as well, so it makes sense he would want to participate in a project like this.

What you may not know gentlemen, is that throughout the video, there are, I guess you can call them Easter Eggs. You see this video, and the song was a tribute to Michael Jackson. From the dancing, obviously. But also the fact that it was filmed all over the world to show the kind of love and influence that Michael had.
If u watch the video again u will start to see things, like certain moves, the way their were dressed...1. Jason was wearing Michael's iconic "Smooth Criminal" suit. Lay was wearing a version of Michael 80's Jacket and his glove combined. And NCT was wearing a version of his "Bad" suit. They were all doing his shuffle dance, and the dance break with NCT, that actually was a recreation from Michael and Janet's song "Scream," when they were on the ceiling. And lastly, the girl on the skates at the end...that was a tribute to the "Bad" video. They re created the guy on the skates in the video, but if you look behind her on the wall, you will that it says, "For MJ." A lot of Easter Eggs....
