The magic and wonder of TH-cam is that we can learn a lot from, and a lot about, a person. In the last year I've learned a lot about his philosophy, his technique, all in addition to knowing for years that he's just an absolutely beast of a player. A big takeaway (among many) from this video is that Phil X is a HELL of a listener. He listens intently to the questions and to the conversation so that he can respond thoughtfully and with wisdom and experience
I love that he learned how to play that riff by practicing while watching a movie. That's how I learned my scales and several tricky riffs. I tell my students and friends the same thing but they always think im kidding but maybe they'll listen to Phil X
The last bit's important. Be the musician you'd want to see. I've done my share of gigs where I would just "get by" in certain parts. I would have been hard on the guitar player if I 'd been in the audience. You have to be realistic and hard on yourself to get there.

Phil X is so fun to watch! I made a comment about Guthrie G. being a guitar god the other day, Phil is his mischievous brother or cousin. Imagine G.G. in his gentlemanly way laying down the most complicated effortless solo. Then Phil pops up and says, "cool but rip man!" and he just shreds the thing. Both are fantastic but it's a completely different energy.
So....Phil X played in a "cover band" from 14-19, three 45 minute sets a night, 7 days a week (or was it 8?). THAT explains how he knows most of the great old rock classic songs inside-out, both guitar and vocals, which he played on "Fretted Americana" videos for many years. Seems like a really nice guy, despite the fame and fortune, which is a rare thing. Music before fame and fortune types are few and far between it seems. Thanks for featuring Phil X here...............!
Love Phil X now after watching this, genuine, very confident (because he did his homework and earned it the hard way), he's honest and all I can say is, keep on rockin'
epic! I too found PhilX on the Fretted Americana channel ...I saw how fearless and present he was on a Bass VI. To me, that's what fun looks like in music! It changed the game for me. In that moment, music became more like sk8ting than striving for perfection, all I had to do was practice! I also felt compelled to model that example for my daughter as she explores music. PhilX launched my guitar journey in 2015 ! A journey which lead me to TPS and the rest is history. Thank you both, sincerely, for being the humans you are! 🙏❤️🤘

Thanks for getting hold of this guy Dan; he always seems so genuine & not stuck up his own a***! Which, you could be forgiven for if you played all over the world, & with Jovi at Wembley. This video confirmed a lot of things that I've learnt over the years. One of which, is be nice.
Phil X is the real deal. Been watching him since the Fretted Americana days, and he taught me the most valuable lesson regarding Overdrive pedals and Amps. I never really got on with OD pedals or distortion pedals until I heard Phil say in one video somewhere: "Set your amp to AC/DC, and hit the overdrive to go to Van Halen", and it just clicked in my brain. Push the gain. Don't over crank it. That principle also works when stacking pedals. Total game changer for me, and I owe him for that. Phil is also the reason why my Digitech Bad Monkey was my first, and is still to this day, the only OD pedal I will ever need. Cheers!
I love his comments about playing with lower gain. This is exactly why I run 12AU7s in my Mesa/Boogie. I think lower gain sounds are far more dynamic and dramatic than high gain sounds. They have more "growl".
Phil X is such a great player and comes across as a great guy as well. I love the concept of licks and theory being the vocabulary, but that if he doesn't use certain words he forgets and has to relearn them. Great analogy!
Sorry guys, My Father Bernard Lock died june so I'm just now in the headspace to catch up on your shows. My father was a guitar player, tought me when I was 11 and I/we never stopped. I have to totally agree with Phil, I totally switch off and play from the heart and use emotional feelings to accent what I'm playing. I'm at that point too where I've filled my head with so much, I've forgotten licks from 10 years ago. I'm glad it isn't just me. Great video and thank you to Phil for being so honest, I admire him for that. A lot of pro players like to put a theoretical curtain over the intrecacies of their gear or how they play. Phil is quite refreshing as he is honest, funny and it's nice to feel I can relate to most of what he said. I'm not pro but i've played all my life, it's now i'm at the point where I'm re-learning my own stuff - I totally get what he is saying. Where do you play from Dan? do you think? do you use emotion to play? I think the theory guys play well but imotionally sterile. If your self tought, you are more likely to use emotion to play. It's now after playing for 28 years, It's weird how you evolve and grow mantally, you think wow, where did that lick come from, kind of thing. Thanks guys. Phil i'd love your autograph man?
