  • Apologies for the poor grammar: I put this short film together (hastily) in about 40 minutes, in June 2015.
Bob Flood and I had a truly great time in Finland, and it turned out to be one of the best trips we have ever done (and we've done quite a few). Yes, we threw money at it; but if you are planning to visit Finland and join a Finnature tour, why skimp?
All told, we spent about 3 weeks in Finland and visited many of the key areas/sites, not just those around Oulu and Kuusamo, but those to the S/E. We scored with all our target birds including Pine Grosbeak [Konttainen], White-backed Woodpecker (& the expected night singers) [Siikalahti] and ending with Spotted Eagle [Virolahti]. I was hoping to make a short film about this part of the trip, but it will, probably, never get done...
Of interest: the CSNA (the committee dealing with avian systematics in the Netherlands) have recently revised their taxonomy of Great Grey Owl: it is no longer polytypic. The North American population remains Great Grey Owl Strix nebulosa, whilst the Eurasian population becomes Lapland Owl Strix lapponica. Also, Tengmalm's Owl becomes monotypic, being split from the North American Boreal Owl. See Dutch Birding vol 38, no 2, 2016.
All footage and images taken with the following video/photographic/optical equipment: Nikon Coolpix P900
