    "DEATH the 'Eternal Silence'. Every time you're breathing, you're borrowing some time from death. So if you spend that time getting more knowledge, you're using it well. But if you just squander away time, you'll soon reach your end and realise what I've done with my life."
    A feeling of déjà vu...

    I think that in the zeal of moving on from depression, Tennyson wrote this poem and sketched Ulysses as his mentor who inspires him in moving on as there's no certainty of tomorrow.

    Hi Ma'am,
    It has been after a long time that I am writing down a comment although I follow your work regularly.
    Something I found really fascinating is in the second stanza of this poem when he describes the dispositions of Telemachus in ruling Ithaca after his demise.
    This episode too can be related with the British imperialistic overtones. Ulysses was a great explorer and a conqueror who by dint of his valour and intelligence conquered territories and colonies. Great Britain too by the Victorian Age had established supremacy over three-fourth of the global territories at least in Asia and Africa. However, Ulysses's conquest has to be supplemented with the patient and brilliant governance of Telemachus. In the same way, England too needs to focus more on effective governance of the incumbent colonies instead of focusing on searching newer colonies.
    I just find this thought interesting and thought to share my discourse on the colonial currents in this poem.

    Ma'am, you said the emotional gulf of Tennyson led him to Ulesses- particularly in its treatment of domesticity. But Ulesses is nowhere shown to be obligated towards his home (calling his wife as aged, does not want to wait and see his son's successful rule), he just wants to explore and gain more knowledge. Can you kindly help what is meant by you here?

    • @NibblePop

      The poem is also depicting Telemachus. Telemachus represents the domestic persona of the Victorian man.

    Ma'am, in any case while writing a critical appreciation of a writing if my words appear to contradict the interpretation of a scholar apparently But I tried my best to convince my teacher through my words to establish my explanation then will my explanation be considered unacceptable because they're a scholar and I am an undergraduate student?
    Basically I'm just showing my perspective through my words as per my understanding, it's like what is 6, is 9 from the opposite direction, I'm not opposing their explanation I'm just giving my perspective, a parallel idea of the same thing then Could it be unacceptable?

    • @NibblePop
      @NibblePop  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not at all. In fact if there is one scholar stating a view there are ten others stating the opposite.
      But it is safer to use words such as "perhaps", "it may be seen " or " one may say" and then give proof in support of your statement.
